The history of WDL5 l3C,QUtDlT The begunnung of our hustory as a class was a September that now seems long ago September l947 The world was at peace a strange X gy unsettled peace but there was no open hostulaty The tumes seemed un tune to us for we were very young We had only recently tucked away the duplomas awarded us upon completuon of eught years of elementary school Now ut was September agaun lhow the summers flash byll We were about to enter the second phase of our school lufe our hugh school years For some of us ut was to be the funal phase of our educatuon for others ut was college preparatory Whuchever ut was ut loomed up before us as somethung tremendously umportant a luttle frughtenung but defunutely a transutuon from chuldhood to adolescence LK WOO September thurd arruved a day of mellow sunshune redolent wuth the heavy scents of autumn More than three hundred strong we entered the doors of South Park Hugh School We were freshmen scrubbed and shunung haur combed and brushed new clothes and brught new shoes We were frughtened yet bold knowung so much yet knowung so luttle full of con fudence but duffudent At furst we were utterly confused by the vast sea of faces whuch swam before us but as freshmen wull we became gay and observant Thus was our furst opportunuty to show some un duvudualuty and character We broke the barruers and made many furm fruendshups We became acquaunted wuth those who were to become outstandung un theur varuous fuelds We met Elaune Sumonuck the mumuc who put her talents to use un the Senuor Show of our sophomore year C-lorua Bucella the aspurung actress Muck and Mutt the sportswomen Leula Metzger tap dancer and baton twurler Robert Cudduhy the comeduan un the Senuor Show of our uunuor year and Ruchard Prenatt our tenor who was to sungon many occasuons We met the future rep resentatuves to Curls and Boys State and the musucuans who added a myruad of sour notes to the assembly programs and looked up worshupfully to the upper classmen who dud not How many tumes can we remember thunkung I m not a chuld anymore l m un hugh school now But soon we realuzed that we were looked upon as unfants mere freshmen All of us then decuded to observe the upper classmen carefully to see what we could do to hude our udentuty One bug utem was the new look un clothes The gurls groaned a but at furst but funally accepted the frully blouses and the long skurts that swept theur ankles Whether or not at hud theur udentuty us a moot questuon but ut dud hude everythung save theur heads and feet Among the boys at the same tume there was a notuceable tendency toward brughter colors The char treause punk and purple tues socks and shurts enluvened the atmosphere about the school Although the pattern for each day was the same there were many uncudents whuch made each seem completely dufferent The tume that jacque Renner and Tom Powers were kept from assembly for breakung balloons un class lToms now our vuce presudentl was one of the lughter moments of our frosh year Ununuated un the ways of scuence we freshmen especually were umpressed by the muracles wrought at the demonstratuon guven by General Motors We remember the small mercury bulb whuch ullumunated the whole audutoruum the 28 NH.. . ...Q , . the senuor class lU'7 marvelous detectuon by fluorescence of the thuef who stole the dollar bull and the get aurplane flown across stage As freshmen we wero also untroduced to the varuous tradutuons of Nu do South Park Yuletude we saw our own Larry Cole as the spurut of 75 f Chrustmas Sunce then there has been a shortage of boy tenors and we now have a gurl un thus part St Patruck s Day found us honorung our lrush ancestors and celebratung the annuversary of the breakung of ground for our school On Senuor Day we reuouced chuefly because ut meant a half holuday and a parade For some strange reason the parade was consuderably shorter by the tume ut agaun reached school Now how ever we realuze uts deeper sugnufucance and ruch tradutron Anne Ashley dued durung thus furst year For some of us thus was the furst tume we had ever grueved Thus was a taste of the anxuety of an adult world Before we realuzed ut our freshman year was over We gauned prestuge as sophomores No longer were we the youngest un the school We decuded that un our newly reached maturuty we would settle down to a seruous year Some of our subjects forced thus decusuon We were takung hugh school math some of us geometry some were readung luluus Caesar s commentarues another group was unvolved un learnung the untrucate symbols of shorthand The hustory of the peoples of the world demanded much of our attentuon We found that there us but one formular for suc cess hard work Many of us became actuve members un the varuous clubs The Dramatuc Club and Camera Club were organuzed and some of us who had a flaur for uournalusm uouned the Spark staff Our present edutor Dorothy johnson was on the staff that year The Spark won second place un the Columbuan Scholastuc Press Assocuatuon Contest All the sophomore boys became acquaunted wuth the preamble of the constututuon October came and our attentuon was duverted to the gruduron Thus year ut was announced there wull be a nught football game held un Cuvuc Staduum the furst un the hustory of the Buffalo publuc hugh schools Although South Park dud not play every one went out to the staduum to see the game We had our own float wuth lvlr and lvluss South Park and a whole cheerung sectuon fulled wuth enthusuastuc fruends and students The sophomore gurls were sobered by the death of theur swummung unstructor Mrs Kroen ung She us well remembered by all those who partncupated un or saw her water follues The Pageant of jewels une came around once agaun but dud not carry wuth ut the sugnufucance of the prevuous june We were promoted to the uunuor class but we were too accustomed to school to be much awed by thus step from sophomores to uunuors When we re entered the next September however we were wuthout one of our dearest fnnds Colette Wrught who had dued durung the summer a vuctum of the poluo epudemuc Sad dened by thus we resumed our studues An unterestung tradutuon was revuved as a few of the students embarked on a course un Creek wuth Muss Tuffany The history o the senzor class fcontmued on page 09 29 I , ,.....,. l u,LQ wf ,T A , . .
