He sought an audience with Isabella of Castile to win from her a promise to lend her heart and her purse to the support of a daring sea voyage. The man who had enkindled his imagination remained in the monastery to await the abbot's return Upon the outcome of such a simple act hung the fate of a nation whose destiny did not begin to take shape until three centuries later lronically enough in the middle of the fifteenth century the finger of fate was pointing toward a new world for Columbus sailed westward to reach the lndies all his maps and his plans bore out this fact and the land that lay between that tremendous dual continent washed by two oceans was only an accident in the course of the voyage Yet out of that land out of that accident of discovery has emerged a country whose name is fraught with meaning both for those who envy and fear her strength and those who seek her protection We grow so accustomed to the story of our countrys discovery and its unparalleled rise to power and the name America is said and read so many times in the daily pursuit of our lives that we must review from time to tim the events in her history the legend that has grown up about her the strirring deeds of her heroes the natural beauty and wealth with which Cod has blessed her the paradox of her discovery in order that we may hear the music in the name America taste anew its flavor and feel a pride welling up within us whenever it strikes us afresh that America is our birthright and our heritage Through the years men of every race creed and color have sought peace and liberty on American shores This nation was founded upon the principle of freedom The concept of freedom is very ancient and precious lt runs like a golden thread through the fabric of the history of mankind We have becom a melting pot where the ebullience of the Irish the sobriety of the Teuton the patriotic fervor of the Englishman the passionate enthusiasm of the southern European blend together to make America great The intellectual and the unschooled the manor lords and the tillers of the soil the nobles and the peasants have learned to live side by side in a land where east and west have met Out of this unpar alleled fusion has arisen a new man e American For this man there is hope no matter how disheartened he may be ne is daring and his courage is unsurpassed because he has blessings on which to expend his daring and courage The American looks to the future with optimism because he knows there is a C-od above to be his guide From the beginning our nation has prospered until now one hun dred and seventy five years later we can match ff fait?
