Ed, I L 3 W 914, dllnbwapari On a day brulluantly lughted wuth sunshune thurty sux years ago thou U ETIITDU sands of spectators gathered to wutness the Iayung of the cornerstone of the new South Park Hugh School That was a day fraught wuth meanung for the communuty for ut marked the turnung pount of years of effort on the part of the cutuzens of South Buffalo The date was june lst 1914 As early as November 1911 the sponsors of the new hugh school had made theur unfluence felt un the Councul Chamber where on the twenty second of that month a resolutuon was passed to buy the land on whuch the hugh school now stands From that day forward through constructuve efforts necessary to the erectuon of a new publuc school busuness progressed untul March 17th 1914 saw the breakung of ground for the new edufuce and june 1st the Iayung of the cornerstone Thus was undeed a proputuous day lt meant an opportunuty for parents un the communuty to offer theur chuldren a hugh school educatuon and untellectual growth ut meant a more closely knut communuty lufe cultuvatuon of those splendud qualutues of loyalty cuvuc prude and rughteous ambutuon a fnner apprecuatuon of all that con trubutes to cultural growth Doctor Robert Bapst was appounted pruncupal of the new hugh school by the uncumbent dents already embarked on theur hugh school career on the openung day September 7th 1915 temporary quarters were opened nn 1914 on the thurd floor of old School 35 un Swan Street where a lught aury study room and sux recutatuon rooms housed the charter students In the fol lowung September thus student body fulled wuth prude and eager wuth excutement resumed theur studues un the new buuldung umposung un uts structure and beautuful un uts appountments suut ably named South Park Hugh School The buuldung was formally deducated on December 16 1915 The exercuses were attended by over two thousand enthusuastuc cutuzens whose unterest was well rewarded The audutoruum where the people gathered enveloped wuth an aura of newness was beautuful un uts classuc sum plucuty The frueze that adorns uts entrance us an exact repluca of that of the Erechtheum at Athens That evenung Doctor Bapst wel comed the guests and hus remarks were fol lowed by an address by Adelbert Moot Re gent of the Unuversuty of the State of New York Now South Park Hugh School was truly launched on uts career of servuce and faculty and student umbued wuth rughteous prude so necessary to success worked turelessly t brung every new enterpruse to uts fruutuon On the Sunday followung the deducatuon a serues of organ recutals was begun to con 9 ra , Q 05 ..., A, ' I -WI . . - 1 - Superintendent of Education, Dr. Henry P, Emerson. ' o - 11,flcffwAp,acL PUBLIC SCHOOL 55 tunue on the furst and thurd Sunday of every month untul May These were funanced by the school and open to the publuc Among the artusts who presented these musucals was Wulluam I Gomph the organust and our own Wulluam Walsh an accomplushed vuolunust accompanued hum Another unnovatuon was the sulent drama the movues presented to the students every Thursday afternoon and the adult members of the communuty un the evenung Among the fulms shown were luluus Caesar Treasure Island Ruchard the Thurd Davud Copperfueld and others of educatuonal Dr Bapst value South Park soon became known as acenter of classucal learnung lt was unevutable that a man of Dr Bapst s calubre should take prude un nurturung those studues whuch were dear to hus heart All other departments of learnung flourushed and kept pace however wuth the language department Mathematucs scuence busuness subjects hustory were seruously pursued The domestuc arts were encouraged the fune arts cultuvated and as years passed the pruntung shop under the able durectuon of Albert C Ernst was second to none un the Buffalo schools A furm beluever un the adage a sound mund un a sound body Dr Bapst encouraged physucal educatuon and under the wuse guudance of Rae Hunman that department produced some of the best hugh school athletes un Buffalo A unuque feature of South Park was uts musucal apprecuatuon course The students were pruvuleged to hear the works of our greatest composers explauned and presented somewhat after the style of Walter Damrosch And so the chuldren of South Park at a most umpressuonable age were told about Mendelssohn ad Chopun Luszt and Beethoven Mozart and Shubert the operas of Rossunu and Verdu Wagner and Donuzettu and others and the best known and best loved aruas from these operas South Park grew and prospered The student body uncreased untul the halls were so thronged wuth chuldren that ut was necessary to open annexes furst at school 67 un l932 then at 72 and 69 ln 1837 Publuc School 7 was opened as a regular annex to South Park to remaun as long as the regustratuon demanded ut The furst graduatuon class un l9l6 numbered nune graduates The classes grew produguously untul un l'-939 sux hundred and fufty seven graduates receuved theur hugh school duplomas Durung uts thurty fuve years the school has met all the vucus sutudes of fortune wuth fortutude lt has wutnessed two world catastrophes now aptly l nown as World War I and World War ll ln the furst World War young men of the faculty and student body answered the call to the colors Those who remauned at home dus played unruvalled patruotusm pushung the Luberty Loan druves solucut ung for the Red Cross the gurls sewung and knuttung feverushly for the boys over there ln World War ll the same hugh type of en thusuasm was duverted to bond druves scrap druves and every type of war effort fostered un the schools The monument on the lawn at the southeast corner of the buuldung pays sulent trubute to one hundred and twenty three gallant South Parkers who gave the last 10 1 g 1-1 I X . . lf. 1 1 1 . 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , . , . . . . . . - 1 1 . 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 - 1 . . . . .1 . . 1, . , . 1 1 1 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 Y 1 , . 1 , . . 1 1 1 ' 1 1 .1 914, dlnhwapect full measure of devotuon un the second world struggle Smce that tame South Park has proud ly presented hundreds of dlplomas to young veterans who thelr school work Interrupted by the war have returned with deeper apprecnatlon to complete theur high school courses The Years have brought many changes In secondary school llfe with adlustments an cur rlcula and adoption of new methods and attltudes demanded by a changlng world Dr Bapst left South Park ln l932 to become Associate Superintendent of the Buffalo Secondary Schools and Mr Frank P Regan who had been assastant prnncnpal smce l923 succeeded hm Mr F Nncholas McCarthy was appointed assastant prvnclpal The general pattern of lrfe at South Park Mr Regan endeavored to keep unchanged and many of the tradltlons of the early years stlll perslst Thousands of alumn: can go back un retrospect to the years they spent un South Park The school year opened classes were resumed and when the mellow October days were upon us and the audltornum rang with South Park wall shnne or Crash through that lane of blue everyone knew the Sparks were out on the grudlron again carrying the ball for South Park October slipped by Into November and Thanksdlvlng found hundreds of volces raised :rf the tradntlonal hymn We gather together to ask the Lords blessing December brought days astlr wnth antlclpatlon Bats of melody from the Christmas carols drafted unto the halls and as Chrrstmas approached the pme trees were brought un and thelr fragrance permeated the cor rldors and stnrred the senses The annual pageant began wnth the flute luke soprano volces of the young heralds and the Chrlstmas Splrut and ended with the entlre chorus slngmg Handel s trumphant Alleluia Once more the curtain fell on a pageant and a musncal program of un forgettable beauty Tume went swnftly on suddenly It was March l7th our anniversary day and green blossomed everywhere rcbbons on the gurls tres on the boys songs In the hearts and on the laps of the students Then Easter and the hauntmg strauns of the strlfe IS o er the battle won Alleluua were prophetrc of sprung the years renascence the flowers In pro fusuon once more fulfillment and the word fulflllment brungs us to Sensor Day and Com mencement and another Sensor Class as they leave the stage and audltornum sunglng the tradu tnonal recesslonal Once again uv mvvt mg! thfr here at 0111 South Purh With a smile to share ll . . . . . . . -
