Class of 1946! Probably there never was a time in the history of this country when the opportuni- ties for young people were more plentiful. Vast new frontiers in science, industry, education, business and labor await exploration. The world cries out for food and goods. Thousands of people need houses, automobiles, and other products of our fields and factories. We stand on the threshold of an era which we hope will be one of international good-will in a rebuilt world from which war will be banished. Yet the realization of all our hopes rests on stern self-discipline and the application of physical and mental energies without which these opportunities will fall short of fulfillment. I trust that you will meet this challenge with intelligence, fortitude and courage, and an awareness of the responsibility that is yours to assist in directing the world of tomorrow along paths of justice, peace and prosperity. W. ww- The General Shop Industrial development in our country has overshadowed progress of all types in many parts of the world. Because we live in this highly industrialized state the study of Industrial Arts has become a part of our general education. The Industrial Arts shop provides a place where the students of South Park may live with, understand and appreciate some of the fundamental processes of industry. These experiences are intended to assist in the development of worth- while skills, application of knowledge gained in the classrooms and familiarization with areas of study in electricity, metalwork, woodwork, printing and home me- chanics. For many students the shop provides the only contacts of an industrial nature which our boys or girls will ever have until after graduation. We strive, therefore, to make the shop activities general in scope so that as many as possible may have an opportunity to engage in all of the various branches of work. This year marked the start of actual work in the general shop. Beset with short- ages of tools and materials the boys, nevertheless, made up for these deficiencies with their enthusiasm and ingenuity. Before next year we hope to have equipment for more extensive work in sheetmetal, metal molding and electricity. Present shop tools include a complete crib for hand woodwork, metal and wood turning lathesg band, circular and jig sawsg drill press and grinder. During the course of the year boys in the shop classes assisted in setting up newly arrived machines. They par- ticipated in laying out and installing tool racks, work stands and other shop neces- sities. In addition to these activities they produced projects involving work in fields of wood, metal, electricity and printing. X 4. W n The Library It has been said that the character of a man is indicated by what he reads. By the same token, the library is the pulse by which the intelligent interests of a school may be measured. South Park's library is of inestimable value to teachers and students, offering abundant supplementary reference material to both. For the teachers, the library is instrumental in effecting an economy of time, since extensive research material in every phase of academic instruction is conveniently located in one place within the building in which they meet their classes. For the pupils, it functions in another way. It offers to the ambitious student an opportunity to augment class instruction or to pursue into its more detailed ramifications any topic suggested by class activity. South Park's library boasts a fine collection of general reference books of all types, books in specific fields, such as history, biography, travel, explorations, science, the arts, handcraft, hobbies, sports, books to meet the need of the more literary minded, such as plays, essays, poetry, classic fiction, and the best works of our modern authors. As more and more material on career planning is published, it is added to the already extensive collection at hand. Material is also available covering the fields of atomic energy, radar, television and other electronics, plastics, modern housing, heli- copters, air transportation, and many others. The book collection is supplemented with magazines, the vertical file, government documents, maps and recordings. A definite challenge to South Park students lies in the fact that their library is not static. Instead, it is alive, and growing, expanding with the swiftly changing world, and always an enjoyable causeway to understanding and wisdom. Health and Physical Education Although the gymnastic and aquatic facilities are somewhat apart from the main building, the division is of an architectural nature only. The aims of this depart- ment are correlated with all other school activities, to help prepare the pupil for living in a democracy now reconverting to peacetime normalcy. Here, in two large, well equipped gymnasiums, a small gym, a swimming pool, three shower and dressing rooms, the diversified regular and extra-curricular program is conducted. In the formal program of physical education there are many objectives. Work on the heavy apparatus develops muscular strength and control. In dancing, the pupil develops poise, grace and balance. In games, they secure relief from tension. In marching and forms of drill, they learn to think and act as part of a group. In all phases of this department they improve, in varying degrees, in coordination of mind and body. Classes in health were organized in january of this year in compliance with the Board of Regents regulations that all students graduating from secondary schools must have instruction in this field for one year. This instruction purposes to help young people to become strong and healthy in mind and body, firm in morale and normal in personality. Formal classes in swimming are conducted along recognized techniques. The standards of the American Red Cross are maintained and attain- ments recognized by the presentation of Red Cross certificates. The extra-curricular activities in all branches of physical education develop quali- ties tangible and intangible. The benefits are social as well as physical. Besides paying dividends in improved health, they provide opportunities for the wholesome use of leisure time, teach teamwork and fair play, encourage good sportsmanship, and develop leadership. The team finished second losing first place to its traditional rival, Kensington. Three South Park men attained All High recognition by finishing second, third and fifth in the final or All High School Race. South Park Swimming Team INTERSCI-1oLAsTIC CHAMPIONS-1945-1946 South Park's winning of the Syracuse Swimming Cup was due largely to the expert coaching of Mr. Sweeney. Early in the school year -Coach Sweeney organized a promising squad and team. The group practiced faithfully on Monday, Wednes- day and Friday afternoons. Many new recruits reported for the team, along with veteran swimmers. The comradeship and cooperation of all the team members were the chief reasons for the winning of the cup. The first meet of the season was held at South Park, with Hutchinson losing to the Sparks, 58-17. It was in this meet that Joe I-Ierbrecht, Don Neitering, Phil Free- denberg and Bob Norton, new swimmers of South Park, Hrst starred. The South Park vs. Lafayette meet was held at Lafayette, with South Park winning, 58-17. Along came the Technical-South Park meet, which South Park also won, 55-20. In the South Park pool Riverside was beaten, 57-18. Next was the Bennett vs. South Park meet, held at Bennett-a South Park victory, 52-23. East was also beaten by South Park in the Sparks' pool, 52-23, which left the outstanding meet of the season, South Park vs. Kensington. This meet attracted many spectators and South Park beat Kensington, 48-27. In the long awaited All-High meet held at Bennett, South Park swamped the other schools by placing in eight All-High events to win the cup and championship. The All-High swimmers were jack Buerger, who had been the star breaststroker and a member of the 120 Medley Relay team, Torn Courneen, speedy star of the 160-Yard Relay, Dan Hayes, diving star known for his friendly rivalry with a fellow diver, Paul Mraz, Ramon Leonard and Alan Mudie, stars of the 160-Yard Relay, John McGuire and John Stubbs, stars of the 120-Yard Relay, and Jim Webb, popular co-Captain of the team, who starred in the 200-Yard Free and 160-Yard Relay.
