THE DIAL SOUTH PARK HIGH SCHOOL BUFFALO NEW YORK l9lll L . . , . , , ' ivl....:' . ,V -1-!rK:-- fzv, .. -, I owwom' THE DIAL again bows itself into the good graces of its readers on this its twenty-sixth annual appearance. Serving as an album of souvenirs of the school year, it hopes to please with its selections and to delight with the memories that it weaves. The ideals, the duties and the responsibilities of citizen- ship, are the glorious heritage of every American and at this time of crisis, when the resources of the nation are being marshaled for defense, this important note is empha- sized in our dedicatory theme-Americanism. V. 3 l 31 'u ADMINISTRATION History A description of the Commencement exercises in J une, 1940, serves as an introduction to the history for the present school year, owing to the fact that the Dial goes to press each year before the exercises are held. The theme of the exercises was The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of South Park High Schoolf, An oration entitled 4'South Park High School-Twenty five years was given by Charles E. Wiles, vice-president of the class and Paul R. Fauth, class president, delivered the valedictory. The class num- bered 612, of whom 95 received diplomas With Honor, indicating that nine of the required sixteen units were earned with a Regents mark of 90 W or above, and 274 received diplomas 'GWith Credit,', having averaged 75W or above in the same number of required units. The Senior Gold Medal awarded for the highest scholastic standing during the Senior year was presented to Nancy E. Ryther and the Jesse Ketchum Medal for the highest scholastic standing for the entire four years of high school was won by Charles E. Wiles. Each year the University of the State of New York awards forty scholar- ships to the students in Erie County who have the highest average based on marks attained in regular Regents examinations. These scholarships entitle the holder to one hundred dollars a year for four years, while attending any New York State college or normal school. The following six graduates of the class of 1940 won such scholarships and deserve congratulations for their success: Ellen M. Neylon Josephine A. Zdon Nancy E. Ryther Patricia A. Sullivan Thelma L. Davies Margaret M. Mockler School opened for the new scholastic year 1940-41 on September 4 with a second week registration of 3244. 335 freshmen were assigned to the South Park High School Annex at School No. 7 and 397 freshmen were provided for at the annex at School No. 67. ln consequence, the over- crowding of the past few years in the main building was somewhat relieved. The general decline in school enrollment throughout the country had reached the high schools for the first time and was reflected in the decrease of approxi- mately one hundred fifty pupils. With eager anticipation, the students each year look forward to the Christ- mas pageant as the culmination of long preparation for the holiday season. 6 This year was no exception and the traditional performance was produced with all its brilliant color and tuneful music providing a setting that lingers long in the memory of all students. The decking of the corridors and the auditorium with evergreens and holly for many has become a labor of love effectively contributing to the fitting celebration of Christmas. The kings, shepherds, heralds and angels performed impressively and the musical selec- tions were beautifully rendered in the best South Park tradition. With presentations for the students on Thursday and Friday afternoons and for the general public on Thursday evening, the Christmas season was fittingly ushered in at South Park. Many members of the alumni returned to their Alma Mater to re-live for the moment the happiness of Christmas Hat home. The Alumni Association held its annual re-union at the Buffalo Trap and Field Club, December 26. About five hundred were in attendance and the dining and dancing in the elaborately decorated ballroom was thoroughly enjoyed. The committees in charge deserve commendation for the success of this delightful affair and the same friendly atmosphere, so traditionally prevalent at such gatherings, again prevailed. The retiring president, Dr. Edward J. Eagan, presided at the dinner. The officers elected for the coming year were: Edward L. Guthrie ,,...,.......... ...,,......... P resident Dr. Raymond J. McCarthy ....... ..,..,.. V ice-President Marcella P. Godfrey .,...,.,...... ....,....,,... S ecretary Mrs. Charles Regan ...........,.......,.....,....,,....... Treasurer In all interscholastic contests in declamation, oratory, essay writing and debating, South Park was represented and made a creditable showing. Preliminary contests held at the school in these activities aroused much interest among the students and the experience and training gained by con- testants was well worth the effort expended. Eleanor Szumilo, who repre- sented South Park in the Interscholastic Girls' Declamation Contest, won second place with her selection '4The Renegade Zouavef' Shortly after the opening of school in September, the call was issued for candidates for the golf, cross country and football teams. A large number of enthusiastic boys responded and as the season advanced the teams in all three sports made splendid progress. At the end of the season South Park was second in golf and third in cross country, but owing to an unfortunate incident, was obliged to forfeit three games in football, closing the season in that sport in tenth position. Interest ran high in the winter sportsg basket- 7 ball and swimming. ln the early season many of the basketball games were decided by close margins and three games required extra period play before the final result was known. The swimming team, although largely composed of boys inexperienced in interscholastic competition when the season opened, made a remarkable record, losing only one interscholastic meet and finishing second in the All-High contest. South Park teams showed strength in the three Spring sports, baseball, track and tennis, winning the Scalp and Blade trophy in track for the first time since the opening of the school. The tennis team won the trophy by taking first place in this sport and this also marked the initial award of this cup to South Park. Records and scores of the various contests appear in the Athletic section. Senior Day was celebrated May 29 and we were again favored with beautiful spring weather. The auditorium exercises with the mothers of seniors present, the parade of the entire student body, and the reception for the seniors in the evening provided a happy and joyous occasion which will be long remembered by the boys and girls of the class of 1941. Thus does the historian record the happenings and events of the year and another page is added to the lengthy narrative of glorious achievement of Old South Park. With a hail and farewell to the graduates, and an au revoir to those who will return in September, the story of this school year is brought to a close. 8 1941 Dial Staff ETHEL KANTOR Seniors PAUL CORCORAN Seniors ELLEN MATTINGLY Athletics EMIL ROMANOWICH Athletics JOSEPHIN E BONCIOVAN NI Activities NORMA WEAVER Photographs VIRGINIA SCHEIBLE Essays HELEN SCHROEDER Entertainment SARA ROGERS Classes MURIEL HINTERMIER Illustrations NORBERT FRANK Cover Design JEAN REYNOLDS Honors WILLIAM WALSH Advertising DORUTHEA LUMPP Advertising MYRLE GICK Advertising N ORMA BEALE Advertising RICHARD ADAMS Graduate Editor 'A' NORBERT FRANK MURIEL HINTERMIER RUSSEL MATTESON RAY CONNORS Knocks 9 The Faculty ADMINISTRATIVE FRANK P. Mahnk Thomas J. Worthington L f E SSAYS AMERICAN HISTORY 'k Americanism DoL0REs E. KOWALSKI, Class of '41, The essence of Americanism is the belief that the conduct of an American citizen should be directed toward that which is of ultimate benefit to his country and its people. From this concept there have evolved the many and traditional ideals which constitute Americanism. These ideals have been embodied in our two great national documents: The Declaration of Indepen- dence and The Constitution of the United States of America. lt is, of course, difficult, especially for contemporaries, to judge of the relative merits of men and their Work. Achievements which are praised may be of little permanent value, those which are unrecognized may he beneficial. In 1781, the representatives of the states, with the sad experience of the English government still fresh in their minds, formed the Confederation of States. These men were afraid that a strong national government would result in the old grievances of the pre-Revolutionary days. But the Hcritical period of the Confederation was clear evidence of the necessity for a new system. There was need for a vigorous and efficient government which could guarantee the security and freedom of the individual. Under the leadership of Washington and Hamilton a federation of the states was accomplished, and this government has for a century and a half proven to be democratic and stable. Evidently, in order that any work be of permanent benefit, that it may be equally appreciated in the present and in the future, much unselfish labor and thoughtful patriotism is essential. In other words, the people of America who are to benefit by Americanism must not be thought of as the people of a particular class or a particular time. The people of America are the Americans of all stations and of all times. We may look to the Americans of the past for guidance. . We must serve the Americans of the present and future. Americanism requires that the citizen have a clear understanding of his rights and a true appreciation of the corresponding duties. The citizen is entitled to all the guarantees and privileges given by the Constitution of the United States. He may vote at all general elections and 4-4 he may hold public office in the United States. He is guaranteed liberty, limited by the liberty of others and the general welfare. He is guaranteed security from tyranny and wrong. He is guaranteed the right to use property in any way not harmful to the public good. He has the right to serve on a jury and the benefit of a trial by jury to determine the question of guilt or innocence. William Penn said, '6As governments are made and moved by men, so b men the are ruined, too. Therefore overnments rather de end on men Y g P than men on governments. The citizen should use his right to vote and he should vote honestly and intelligently. He should learn as much as he can about the various privi- leges, duties, laws, and government functions in order that he may be useful rather than dangerous. He should participate more actively in the rights and duties of his citizenship. A passive attitude, contrary to the belief of some, is harmful rather than harmless. Those able citizens unwilling to sacrifice their time and their energy in the interest of the government are hurting their fellows and hurting themselves. Often such an apathetic atti- tude results in the election of a poor and. sometimes, unfortunately, a dis- honest candidate. The citizen should be loyal to his country in time of war, and be of service lo his country in time of peace. He should always remain a student. He should make the best use of all his talents and powers. He should respect authority while active in the support of those causes which he believes to be right. In short, the duty of an ideal citizen is to return at least as much to his community as he received from it. The American citizen does not believe: HMy Country, right or wrongf, Un the contrary, he tries to correct his countryas wrongs. His criticism and his views are necessary for progress. But the thoughtful patriot always has the highest ideals of Americanism in mind when he criticizes his country. Americanism stands for our highest ideals, our noblest efforts, our supreme sacrifices, and our infinite love for our country. It symbolizes everything that we cherish and reverence. lt is personified from Valley Forge to Chateau-Thierry in the soldier, exalted to great heights, because he felt that he was fighting for his most worthy possessions. It is represented by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and by men like them. It is synonymous with continual progress. It is an eternal insurance against loss or damage to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. 4-9 GREEK if Americanism MARY LOUISE TAYLOR America 6011 15 TCTJII 67x6u06pw11 Xdapa :cal 1? We walk through well-lighted streets and live in well-lighted homes, not enfolded in the shrouds of a black-out. We read our newspapers with the knowledge that it is the result of the editor's effort to present the truth as guided by his conscience and by his common sense, not by some government censor bureau. We Worship God in the manner of our choice. We are Americans. Americanism is a beautiful word. We like to repeat it over and over again to ourselves because it is the symbol of a great heritage that is ours. Theoretically it means the belief in American customs, ideals, and attitudes. But to most of us who naturally embrace these traditions, Americanism stands for happiness, freedom, and life. We say these are our inalienable rights, but people of other lands must do without them. We are happy in our pride for this country, its present status, and its glorious past. We are happy for there is hope in the future, and happiness cannot exist without hope. Amer- icanism stands for freedom. Only an American can understand the true, full meaning of the word. Here, our rights to freedom of speech, press, and religion are guaranteed by our Constitution, and we know not what it means to be deprived of them. Ours is a land founded by people of many nation- alities and creeds, who came here, after giving up the ties with their father- lands, to embrace Americanism. We are now approximately one hundred thirty million people, occupying three million square miles of territory, we are not crowded, we do not have a surplus population, which necessitates conquering new frontiers to accommodate the excess. We have ample agricul- tural and mineral resources, raw materials, and a good industrial structure, and are not crushed by want. We have escaped the tyrant's persecution. Our laws are based on the principle of democracy-government by the people. Such are the blessings of Americanism. Americanism is a vivid, living thing. We feel its presence whenever our flag is unfurled, our anthem is sung, or the patriotic words of one of our immortal countrymen are reiterated. We have ample reason, then, to be proud of our Americanism. We have ample reason to fight as our fore- fathers fought to preserve our Americanism. We have ample reason to lift our heads high when we sing our national anthem, 'The Star-Spangled Bannerf, for we sing of a beautiful Hag in a beautiful land. 51 ,Y , F: Y. kqwfy, 1' 1.,q:':l .- I:-wyaa. 1 . 1.. 1 ,p 9 W, ,lu 1519.
