Remember when we proudly entered S,O..T.H. for the first time as seventh graders and realized that our wildest dreams about the new school were gross understatements? Though S.O.J',I-I, was new to us, we soon found our way to the cafeteria, bathrooms, nur se's office and janitor's closet. We found the time, too, to work hard together to make plans for building a school in Botswana, Africa, through the School Partnership Program. Some of the joy of winning the Principal-of-the-Year Contest was lessened when a great public figure, Robert Kennedy, was assassinated on the same day that the award was presented to Mr. Sterling. Bobby Levine and Jonny Singer were elected for class offices for the first, but not the last time, for they were to give a repeat performance in the ninth grade. The curtain went up on OKLAHOMA and now some of us were on the other side of the footlights, attempting to dance, sing, and be merry. The Trivia Bowl and Fashion Show, though annual events for us now, were then new and exciting. The year whizzed by, and before we could say, Ain't that ra-aght? , we were in our second glorious year. Unbelievably, we had survived the first year and were welcoming our new principal, Mr. Duchesneau. In sorrow, and with great respect, we attended a memorial for the late Mr. Ray Sterling and realized more fully what a great man we had lost. After months of fighting, the clothing code battle was won, and the boys weren't the only ones in pants. Skirts mysteriously crept higher, and surprisingly, many hems came down to the ground. DAMN YANKEES was the musical this year and many of us became stars of stage land screenj. We also faced the catastrophe of not being able to buy Nutzels and Cheez-its, and many of us became involved in active warfare . . . paper wads and water pistols. After campaign speeches and much soul searching we elected two more outstanding officers for our second year, Carmen Cedola and Steven Neibart. In ninth grade we took our Kudor Preference and heard our introduction to the series of career talks that would follow. Our annual musical, MUSIC MAN, came off with all the acclaim and praise that our previous shows had. Things were getting pretty exciting, with all the talk of our future years at Columbia. With the start of a new year, and a new decade for that matter, we turned toward the serious business of planning our high school schedules. In the spring more than 400 eighth and ninth graders went on a trip sponsored by the Social Studies and English Departments to see the Broadway musical, 1776. Then, all at once, time began moving faster and faster, and our days were a whirl of graduation rehearsals, final exams, and yearbooks. In a daze, we found ourselves at the prom with graduation behind us. So, with all these events in our past it's, Good-bye, South Orange and hello, Columbia. 52 YEARBOOK STAFF Advisor -- Mrs. Ruth Cooper EDITORIAL BOARD L-R.
