sorrouqt-to YVONNIII EWELL MARY RLTLEDGE KATHLEEN GILLLTM OTTO FRIDIA, Acting Superintendent CARD OF EDUCATION 1987 - 1988 I Edwards Says Teaching, Learning District's op rlortty At this point I can tell you with otal assurance that the primary direction will take will be that of emphasizing teaching and leaming. After all, that is the most important task with which tax- payers have charged their schools. Those were the remarks of new DISD Superintendent Marvin Edwards at the 25th Annual Alyce Foster Trail Blazer Awards luncheon of the South Dallas Business and Professional We must be convinced that very child can learn... Marvin Edwards. Women's Club. In one of his first major addresses to the Dallas community, Edwards said his new direction for the district will lace on the shoulders of principals the important responsibility of being the in- structional leaders in their schools. The principal of an effective Marvin Edwards school is an individual who creates a good climate for instmction, who serves as amentor and instructional guide for his or her teachers, who is visible to the students, and who involves parents and community in their school, Edwards I , explained. My goal will be to have an effec- tive principal in every school in the DISD...and I will give that principal both the level of suppon and the level of re- sponsibility and autonomy tl1at he or she needs to be effective. Edwards says he will view all non- teaching positions in the district as sup- port for the classroom teacher. I will be looking for ways to give teachers 'owner- ship' of the instnictional programs, as well as ways to talk back to me about their concems and, ideally, their jobs! These will be two ways in which we cart begin to improve teacher morale. Edwards, who takes over as super- intendent on June l, told the audience, that we must be convinced every child can leam, and we must help every child to be successful. That may mean a teacher will modify his or her teaching style-to t:ry a new way of teaching-in order to help a particular child to leam, Quality teachers do this everyday, he said.
