CARTER and ANDRE D. RICH DEAR READERS. The i984-'85 school year was predicted to be a very different year from any other school year. HOUSE BILL 72 altered many existing situations. lt banned pep assemblies, field trips, competitions held during school time, the just to name a few. The big question was through it all would the students be able to adapt to the New Environment . However, we had no choice. The demands of HOUSE BILL 72 seemed to over circuit everyone. The work began to pile up on teachers and students. Parents had to reacquire responsibilities for their child in school. The 4.00 pm dismissal bell became the symbol of relief for everyone. In this year's annual, we tried to capture the changes that overwhelmed the entire state not just the GOLDEN BEAR Family. However, putting this year's annual together was difficult. Of a staff of twenty students only four members were veterans. Most of our staff were involved in practically everything that happened at S.O.C. and the chaos which started in Austin and filtered down to the classrooms were evident in our production. WE HOPE YOUR YEAR WAS A GOOD ONE. THE EDITORS Letter From The Q0 00 E 4? 0 . ,1A ' , ,,iL.f.:f:g f-.- - 3 N, W I ' 2 My iw 4 -51 ai -I.. is . LL as L, ,QINN 4, V- -A as 5' xm . According to these definitions taken from Webster Dictionary, South Oak Cliff High School is the dwelling of a family line of rulers. A group which has retained prominence and power for thirty-three years. However, The Dynasty of the Den actually begun before the creator, itself. The dynasty begun not with the students, faculty, and staff of S.O.C., but within themselves. The Dynasty begun within their hearts with the hearts being the most important factor. Pride beated the halls of South Oak Cliff H.S. long before the present 2,343 student body and l35 faculty members entered the doors. lt was the pride in the hearts of those before us that set the pace, created the legend, established the dynasty, and throned the ruling class. Nevertheless, the dynasty was not created by pride alone. There was a system. It was the system which told those before us that they probably could be. The elders of the dynasty said, they would be. The system said, I come that l might break you. The elders of the dynasty said, You will make us tried and true, but you will never break us. The system challenged the elders. The elders conquered the system. They established the dynasty and left the legacy to us. We are a dynasty among dynasties. Our city and state are dynasties filled with dynasties. Being great, grand, royal, and leaders come with our nativity. But like all dynasties, we are forever challenged. Like a phoenix, the system has arisen again to challenge The Dynasty of the Den. The system says, Change horses in the middle of the stream. We can do that. The system says, Climb every mountain. We can do that. The system demands that we ford every stream. We can do that. The systems expects us to become plebeians. We can not allow this to happen! The system has not changed, perhaps, regenerated itself with more power and demands. A dynasty can only become and remain a dynasty when it is challenged and it confronts and conquers those challenges. We can not permit the system to crumble in one day, one semester, or one year what has taken years to build. Dynasty, a family, a group of people of much determination, willing to work with each other for the We X , , or rf ll ,ite , betterment of all. We must all be better and great to assure that our dynasty remain the best and the greatest. He maintained a gentle smile which he gave freely. He was a lover of people. Mr. Holloway was a native of Dallas. He attended Lincoln High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, Texas and a Master's Degree from East Texas State University. He was a member of Warren United Methodist Church, the Amigos Club, Dallas Big Brothers, The Moorland Branch Y.M.C.A., The Cedar Crest Civic Club and Huston Tillotson College Alumni Association. He was the first Upward Bound Teacher at S.M.U. for minority people. FREDERICK TODD South Oak Cliff High School has undergone many changes in the past nine years. Striving for Educational Excellence has been emphasized as the number one priority of the school. Educa- tional excellence has always been of the utmost importance to Dr. Frederick Douglas Todd, Sr., principal of South Oak Cliff. Dr. Todd's parents, Clifton and Adelaide Todd, stressed the im- portance of education as a tool to overcome the inequities of a social and political system that attemp- ted to discriminate against minorities. Dr. Todd attended the Dallas public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. Upon completing high school, Dr. Todd enrolled at Prairie View A8LM University where he com- pleted the requirements for a Science degree in l952. While at Prairie View, Dr. Todd served as .lunior Class President and Senior Class President. He was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps. After his college graduation, Dr. Todd entered the United States Army where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. ln December of l952. Dr. Todd mar- ried his college sweetheart, Earle Berneice Nathan. To this union, three children were born. Dr. Todd received his Master of Science degree from Prairie View A8cM University in 1958. In l96l, he began another phase of his career as a principal. Dr. Todd assumed the leader- ship duties of M. B. Lamar Elementary, William B. Miller Elementary, Elisha M. Pease Elementary, Roger Q. Mills Elementary, and Sarah Zumwalt Junior High. ln l970, Dr. Todd was ap- pointed principal of his alma mater, Lincoln High School. The years Dr. Todd spent at Lincoln were ones of self-fulfillment in that he left Lincoln as a high school graduate and he returned as Lincoln's principal. Due to his strong commitment for quality education, Dr. Todd became principal of South Oak Cliff High School in 1975. During his nine years at South Oak Cliff, he has encouraged the faculty and students to achieve the optimum level of educational excellence possible. ln 1979, Dr. Todd received his Doctrate degree in Education-Administrative Lead- ership from North Texas State University. Brenda Ann Battle was born February 4. I95O, in Dallas, Texas. Throughout her formative years, her parents always stressed three basic elements: respecting others, accepting responsibility in all endeavors, and striving for higher educa- tion. These ideals were formost in creating within her acute awareness of the needs of others, being conscientious, and pursuing knowledge. Being exposed to the leadership abilities of teachers in parochial and public educational setting, she eventually chose to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisi- ana. She had a desire to enter the field of Business. It was not until her college years that she finally decided that teaching was for her. Being caught up in the momentous era of her college years, she observed that the leadership came, not 0000 Brenda A. Battle Was Voted outh Oak Cliff Hi h 5chooI's Teacher Of The Year, from the protesters or fighters in the streets, but from t academicians who stimulated and created constructi thought and blueprints for the future through working wi and within the system by teaching. Mrs. Battle states, Education cannot and will not survi on its own. The teacher must be assisted by parents, comm nity, and church in creating the students' awareness, kno edge, appreciation, and understanding of the wide range 1 areas within our existing pliralistic society. Education mu create an awareness of all students their need to contribu to society. That is, if our society is to continue to be productive and competitive entity in our world. It was said that S.O.C. boys were the most talent- ed and well balanced team in the state. S.O.C. was well coached under the di- vine coaching of Jimmy Gales. S.O.C. went undefeated during district sea- son, but couldn't seem to hold on to that winning desire. S.O.C. played strongly the first half, then began to slack up the second half. slacking up to much and losting the game which kicked out their chances of winning state. S.O.C. - SOUTH GARLAND The Golden Bears, after finishing the district without a loss, were set to play their first playoff game of the year. The Bears expected to run away with this game after beating South Garland earlier in the season by 24 points. However, the Colonels had the same idea of running away with the game. They began the scoring by jumping out to a quick 4-O lead over the Bears. The Bears responded by scoring 8 unanswered points. From that point it was a see-saw battle throughout the game. There was a lot of action and excitement to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. When it came to the last three minutes of the game the Golden Bears prevailed as they pulled out a 62-58 victory over the Colonels of South Garland. 0000 C Gales' force awakens S The team to bea T Undefeated South Oak Cliff top UC ba ketball m Samuel's late QC, the cre I SOC tops ' ears from hibernation 'eld for Dr Pepper tournament l es b Gale ' force oics lead SOC ide la creme uell, 75'64 5.0.C. - LAKE HIGHLAND S.O.C. vs. Lake Highland was the second game of the playoff. The Bears had confident that they would go to State. Without a doubt in their mind, they were expecting a blowout. But, Lake Highland stayed with the Bears until the third quarter by back-picking and shooting from the outside. Howev- er, it proved not enough to beat the Bears. The Golden Bear team got into the flow of the game by pressing full court and captalizing on offense as the Bears ran away from Lake Highland 87- 53. 5.0.C. - CONROE The South Oak Cliff mighty varsity team, who finished the end of district play with an undefeated district re- cord and a 3I-l over all season record, went into the semi-finals of regional play against Conroe. The game was set at a run and gun pace from start to finish. Conroe took a quick 8-2 lead as they capitalized on their 4 out of 5 shots. The Golden Bears were running with them. but were not capitalizing. S.O.C.'s coached quickly called a time out to settled the players down. The coach, Jimmy Gales, told them to play ball. Don't worry about them scoring because if we take care of our part it all will fall into place. The Bears came out put- ting the game together, and playing the kind of basketball that they had been playing all year. It was a close, tight game throughout the first half. As the second half began the Bears came back with a winning intensity. They ended the third quarter with a twelve point lead. When the fourth quarter came around, the Bears suf- fered an attack of dizziness. They seem to have forgotten the fundamen- tals of basketball. They could not re- bound as Conroe crept back into the game. Conroe edged the Bears by two points ending the Bears' season with a Sl-79 lost and a 33-2 season record. 00 O0 0000 Coach .limm y Gales Coach Jimmy Gales first began coaching at South Oak Cliff in l97O. Coach Gales also advanced to the regional finals in i972-73. ln I974, the Bears lost to Houston Kashmere in the state finals, with a score of 9l-87. S.O.C. reached the regional finals once again in I975. Coach Gales left South Oak Cliff, and went to North Texas State, where he was hired as assistant coach, with head coach Bill Blakely. Coach Blakely and Coach Gales were known for the schools best coaches. Even to the loss of Coach Blakely, Gales retain the title of Head Coach. Coach Gales then decided that it was time for a change. Gales then was asked to return back to S.O.C. After which Coach Jimmy Gales was able to rebuild the wonderful talent of South Oak Cliff team, and name one of the best teams in Texas. Later, one of the players stated, Though we had the game and lighten up, the next game will be different. When the time came for the Bears to play Sherman they were fired up with intensity to slay their victims. The first quarter started off slowly with a 3 point convertion from the Bears. ln the second quarter the Bearcats made their first touchdown which left the score 6-3. As the second half came upon the Bears, they were steaming hot. Fred Gulley 47 scored a touchdown from a 20 yard run. The defense also made excellent plays to keep the Bearcats in place. The Golden Bears made another victory come true with a socre of 9-6. The Bears started off as an untamed animal. Pinkston could not hold the Bears in the first half as they compiled a total of D4 yards offense. They were only able to score one touchdown which was made by Charles Carter +'7f44. The Pinkston Vikings defense was very hot and their offense was even hot- ter as they marched high to make two scores against the Bears in the second half: which the Bears could not recover. The final score was Pinkston Vikings I3 to S.O.C. Bears 7. lt was apparent the lost affected the team. As the Golden Bears were out to raid the Raiders for a hungry dis- trict victory, the Raiders contra- dicted their notion. In the first quarter neither team had a craving for the game. By the second quarter the Raiders were hounding for a score. They caught S.O.C.'s secon- dary in hibernation. ln the second half the Bears decided they would come out of hibernation. A strong hit by Rodney Rodgers MO fired the rest of the team up. All of the ex- citement soon died as the secon- dary was once again caught stand- ing flat footed. They were burned for a T.D. which was to be the last score of the game. S O C let the Samuel Spartans scare them into a loss by a score of ZI I4 However S O.C. burned the Spruce Apaches at On October l9, l984, Samuel Spartans squared away against the Golden Bears. Samuel scored first on the board with a screen pass. Again, the Bears refused to be out done, the game went on and got dynamic. S.O.C. and Samuel went on to score once more to make the score I3-6. At half time the score remaind I3-6, as S.O.C. and Samuel hit the field again. Samuel scored first during the second half, and S.O.C. still couldn't take the pain. Although, we came back to try and sober things up. We came back with a tremendous run by Lester Thun- der-thighs Dixon, and a two point play by the Golden Bears. Even though S.O.C. didn't come out successfully on top. they played a heck of a game. On October 27, l984, the Bears triple demolished the Spruce Apaches by the score of I9-O. To prove their spirits were still high, S.O.C. came out with winning on their minds. The Golden Bears set the game off with 6 point from a punt return by Ivan At- kins. S.O.C. felt like six points just wasn't enough, so they went on to knock heads. Even though the Apaches never scored, S.O.C. went on to enlighten the game by another T.D. and a field goal with it. This made the game score I3- O. As we can see, the Apaches eventually weren't ready for the Bears. S.O.C. taking that in con- sideration, went on to score again, this time with a jump dive T.D. by the Golden Bears quar- terback Fredrick Gulley. This ended the game with a score of I9-0. O S.O.C. Bears hunted down the Bryan Adams Cougars l4-O, but soon faced the end of an era I5-7. As the cold winter wind engulfed the stadium, the Bears were hot and eager for a victory. From the start of the game until the last tick of the clock, the Bears controlled the game with its awesome defense. ln the first quarter, the Golden Bears marched down the field and invaded the end zone with a I2 yard run by Terry Sampson. The Golden Bears defense scored its first points of the season. The Bears Wedge Busters Cdefensive linej converged on B.A.'s quarterback. As he attempted to pass the ball he was wiped out by a solid hit from the Bears. B.A.'s quarter- back fumbled the ball in the air where it was recovered for a touchdown by Patrick Parker. 3,4 . V U F2 The rest of the game was a fabulous display of the suicide crew and Wedge Busters. CBears defensej. The Golden Bears' Homecoming Game started off in a traditional way. For they had not lost a homecoming game since l98O. The mighty Bears jumped on the Mustangs from the kick-off. The Bears marched down the field, and capped a scoring drive with a two yard plung from Lester Dixon 433. The Bears rode the Mustangs up until the second quarter. With S.O.C.'s suicidal defense, they were able to keep the Mustangs tamed until half time. S.O.C. lost a player 420 Chris Ellison due to dirty defense. Nevertheless. the Bears were still able to return to the game blazing. After displaying an exciting exhibition of plays on the field, the strong hearted Bears could still walk off with pride, realizing that their long-lasting season had all been said and done. 00 DATE 8-Sl 9-6 9-I2 9-20 9-27 IO-4 IO-ll IO-I8 IO-25 ll-I ll-8 The I984-85 Junior Varsity Football Team Row one: Moses Hardemon, Daron Metcelfe, Baredick Davenport, Paul Smith, Lyndon Love, John Lewis, Timothy Lyles, Terry Crowe, Stephen Dodd, Audie Williams, Timothy Green.
