'74 Editor's Foreword The school year of 1973-'74 has been a very good year. lt has had its share of victories and defeats. As well as joys and sorrows. But we have profoundly established a way of life academ- ically, socially and athletically. If one believes that genes move toward perfection of charac- teristics, then SOCites with the added props of being unique in his own way could fall into an advanced stage of double realitiesg functioning consistently with two seemingly contradictory realms simultaneously. Yet as our theme states we are Everyday People but each being dis- tinguished in his own integrity. For to love life is to love contradiction and conflict. To know life is to never understand. But, to be sure that all is love with all this in mind, we could truly say it has been a very good year. Editor-in-Chief 6 UVSMS. Q19 9505-QQ! Curtis Ray Baker Co-Editors Foreword Many friendships have been formed here at South Oak Cliff this year. To party all the time moon to moon. , To want to pop your fingers to every tune . To eat watermelon and candied yams, Greens and cornbread, and Armour canned spam To look at life as one eternal jam. Shout aloud. For this is your country , too. Let them see that America's equally yours. Let them see proud and black are you. Speak, Black man. Shout aloud. For bold spirits and heritage is yours . Don't you let old whitey put you down. Don't you go through no back doors. Speak, Black Man. Shout aloud. There's endurance and power in your back. Show the endurance that blackness is. Show them the power of black. It comes all of a sudden, Without any warning or sign. Love is like a bottle of wine. It ages and it mellows. It spins around in your head . And then it finally settles. Bonnie Brown SADNESS Sadness is like the wind through an empty house . Sadness is like the crying of little children hungry in the night . . . very lonesome . Sadness is like the howling of a coyote at the moon. The squeaking of a door opening or closing. Bruce Berry SPRING The cold wintery wind is gone With only traces of brown as memories. Spring has come! The plagerized melodies of the mockingbird, The pollen polluted pleasing breezes are just beginning. This is, indeed, the happiest of seasons. Old cold-wom clothes are pared for warmer weather. Everything, whether living or not, has its spring cleaning New sports - and a complete change of what was . Andrew Berry POEM A feeling of exhilaration An unknown joy The charms of such situations, be a little too much for a boy. Adventure Brown, Black, Yellow Red white and blue. We are all similar, No matter what hue . People The soul of man. No bath the beginning and end of life: Is released from all cares. Trouble , V Because just a memory Freedom This is mine ' 'I want yours too. Possession Rodrick Gooden BE TRUE TO YOURSELF Some people have hang ups and some people just don't know how to face the world. Some people seek to find freedom and peace by turning on to dnigs. And the others turn to suicide as a result. Some people steal and kill trying to make a hussle. While the others sell their bodies by the week to get a little dough for a score . Some people lie and cheat to make a beat, supposing to fool the almighty man. No matter what you do it won't change the world, so just try to make it the best way you can, and be true to yourself. f Elizabeth Isaac D A SINNER'S PRAYER Master, Almighty, Master, Have I not done what you have asked? Have I not changed , though very fast? I know I lied, I cheated, I stole, But Master, my Master Those days have grown old. I lived a life , a wretched one: Now I asked your forgiveness For the things I've done. My mother I denied My sister I raped: Please understand Master, It was all a mistake. Forgive me Masterg Forgive me please I'm crying, I'm begging, I'm down on my knees. My heart is forsaken, My soul is despair, My mind is confused, Master, please hear my prayer. Is it too late for me to pray For the wrong that I've done From day to day? I wonder Master, I wonder why , I stabbed my brother And watched him die. I hung my father from the wall: Now I do realize the agony of all. I'm sorry now , I don't know what to do. So Master, O Master. I come to you. You see my condition, You hear my plea. Master, my Master Do something for me . Forgive me Master Forgive me please I'm crying, I'm begging, I'm down on my knees. Tonya Semetres Ware I 136 1. ZMQWQ fi? Cnppled Bears Fall Kenneth Williams the 12-AAAA Player of the year could hardly go at 50 per cent efficiency with a pulled muscle in his back, and Larry Harris sitting out most of the game, and Charles McMillian trying to take up the slack just couldn't do it. And the Bears fell by only four points to Houston Kashmere 91-87 . 4 K M. , Larry Joe goes up for an early two .
