MATTHEWS, PRINCIPAL Dear SOCites: I wish to express my personal appreciation for the loyal support you have given our great school this year. You may be sure that your interest in helping SOC Hi to carry out its objectives in a comprehensive and effective manner is a very important morale factor. SOC Hi was two years old on January 28, 1954. I think we have made re- markable progress in these short years. This was made possible through the hard work and co-operation of students and faculty. It is therefore, with a special gratitude that l salute my understanding friends, who are giving of their best for our school. Sincerely yours, BEN A. MATTHEWS lo Principal M Our Principal . . . Regiment's Second Annual Ball was by a huge margin the most beautiful and extravagant social held at SOC this year . . . The Dad's Club saw to it that the R.O.T.C. was not in want of Regimental Colors . . . Another beautiful trophy was added to our ever growing collection. This one is for the Baseball Champion- ship in the l2AA division . . . SOCites get a good look at their orchestra and like it. . . These English 6 students at right never fail to enjoy Practical English, a weekly magazine, which they use each Friday. This reading period provides an opportunity for every student to broaden his knowledge of the world in which he lives. The ability to read well is an important obiective in the study of American Literature. Some of the students pictured below in Mr. Manton's English 5 class appear rather self-conscious as they illustrate how reading is done. Q l ' Q -1 f t I 'Wwe CK In eighth grade arithmetic we learn how to use numbers in everyday life. We study about areas, volumes, percentage, tables, graphs, banking, taxes, insurance, buying and selling, some of the many uses ot triangles, and last but not least we have a preview of algebra. Numbers surround us wherever we go, and we feel that this world is less confusing and more interesting if we understand how to work with numbers. This is a class of algebra l engaged in the study of simultaneous equations. ff MATH EMATICS Preparation for a career, professional, technical, business, research, military, plus many others and preparation for living requires a knowledge of mathe- matics in one form or another. Thus, our Mathematics Department offers varied courses: Algebra, General Mathematics, Commercial Arithmetic, Geometry, Solid Geometry and Trigo- nometry. The aim of our Commercial Arithmetic classes is to develop power of reflective thinking in solving problems that are of common occurrence in business. In this picture, Mr. Ligon's Com- mercial Arithmetic students are developing knowledge for the future. The use of actual constructions in Solid Geometry helps students solve problems more readily in three dimensions. Students from Mrs. McKissock's Geometry 3 class are finding a clue in this model to' solve one of the many problems. sz' X .,f QQ! 4 ...QP Spf' gnu- ,al .D- f 'Y' .x ss. :.fg,3' 'I'i!l'f'4. ,Q is .4 ,A .fo Qkijf L Miss Pace's World History I class is developing the students' interest through panel discussion. A Is, 4 ' Here one student makes a report on Thomas Jefferson to Mr. Rollings' class in American History, while the rest of the class takes notes. SOCIAL SCIENCES The Social Science classes of South Oak Cliff High School include Civics, United States History, World History, World Geography and Texas History. These classes help to develop the students' in- terest in current affairs. 'In A group of World History I archaeologists digging for facts about the Roman Empire. The teacher is Mr. Graham. Below, Mr. Taylor's History class is using two of their basic tools in a History class-the textbook and the map. 'cY' -:xi , ,Sf , ' ' WY' 'K f ' li Here one student is explaining an experiment in static electricity to the Physics 2 class while two others demonstrate it. The results of the ex- periment are listed on the blackboard. Below, Mr. Whittlesey demonstrates the dissection of a crayfish while two of his Biology students look on. SCIENCES To be well informed in the modern world of today, a student must be able to understand such things as the prin- ciple of the atom and other topics that help him to keep pace in the atomic era we are entering. Therefore our Science Department offers these three courses: Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. -.. '-we Here Mr. Whittlesey's Biology class is engrossed in their study of insects. Below, the Chemistry class is busy distilling a solution of volatile liquids. Everyone i waiting patiently for the liquid to go through the condenser into the beakers. S deeply I The Spanish 5 and 6 class, under the direction of Miss Herrington, put on skits which are done in Spanish. The other members of the class try to understand what they are saying. Buenos Dias, says Miss Herrington, one of our Spanish teachers. Miss Herrington calls out those familiar words to her Spanish 3 students almost every day. FOREIGN LANGUAGES The Foreign Language Department of South Oak Cliff wants to develop in each student an understanding and appreciation of the people who use the language being studied. Ability to speak and write the language is the ultimate goal, but it is hoped that there will be an improvement in the stu- dent's ability to use English correctly. Before seeing a filmstrip on Spain, the mem- bers of this Spanish I class, shown above, are studying the map of Spain and discussing the different peoples who left traces of their civili- zation in the sections of Spain where they set- tled. We not only want to know the language, but we also want to know something of the people whose language we study. In Latin 3, students work on proiects which deal with the life of the Roman people. Here, a class is looking at some filmstrips of Life in Ancient Rome. The problem is one of many which the Mechanical Drawing teacher, Mr. Kribbs helps to solve. The purpose of the course is to provide for growth in thinking through self- expression and for growth and def- initeness and control of ideas through planning and doing. MANUAL ARTS Industrial Arts in today's curriculum serves several purposes. Students taking Industrial Arts have an op- portunity to explore a field in which they might some day like to be employed. lf the field is not to their liking, they have reduced the pos- sibility of taking the wrong iob after leaving school. ln addition, Industrial Arts pro- vides opportunities for the development of hobbies for those wishing to further their education or go into some other field seeking employ- ment. lr rs. gif 1 if Xu Rx. .JL 'f iff: A S971 ,V ,, 1- ix l W-1 All of the pupils in the Wood Shop are working hard to improve their skill in order to make a living Although some will make their living working with wood as carpenters etc others will use their skill a hobby. ln Exploratory Electric Shop two students are giving advice and assistance to a classmate in getting his AC-DC motor to run. V -1-lf' h ex, . ln Clothing Classes the students have the opportunity of planning, choosing color and design, understanding the nature and uses of textiles, selecting materials, and finishing a garment. Here, a group of students are laying out patterns in preparation for cutting their material, which will eventually become an attractive and useful garment. The Homemaking classes are making great progress in their work Below are a few of the many garments the girls are making. The place is in the sewing room during American Education Week. The coat blouses and skirts make up a display at Open House. The teacher is Mrs Harvley HOMEMAKING Acquiring the invaluable knowl- edge of cooking and sewing en- ables girls to become helpful at home now and capable home managers in the future. Sewing is another outlet ot self-expres- sion since it enables each girl to test her creative abilities in de- signing something original. I i The Cooking classes fill the halls ful aroma of many good foods. Under the guidance of Miss Bragg, the Foods class served delicious hors d'oeuvres at the Open House during American Education Week. every day with the wonder A, 3 1 4 MQ?-i The South Oak Cliff Chorus made its first appearance on the air November lO, 1953 Some twenty members were selected from the regular chorus to sing this radio program Everyone who heard the broadcast was highly pleased with the singing. The obiectives of our speech department are to develop confidence and poise, clear and distinct speech, improvement of grammar, and a knowledge of voice technique. Below, one of our speech classes is working out a courtroom scene from a three-act play, The Night of January 16th. Mr, Ratcliff, speech instructor, is directing the scene. FINE ARTS The Fine Arts Courses help develop an appre- ciation for the great art of the past, give oppor- tunity for the develop- ment of talent, and en- courage the ability to create. Courses which provide students with these opportunities are Chorus, Art, Dramatics, Orchestra, and Band. Mr Utley our Orchestra director is doing a splendid 'ob of training and directing hs orchestra students every day at the 5th and 6th periods l, 4- N ,M .,,,. .,.,.-. ..mf R Typing is the vital part of the everyday secretary's work. ln most businesses today, one has to be able to type to hold a position either in whole or in part. Above, one of Mrs, Criswell's classes works hard to improve their accuracy and speed. l gf' ' '-lv lf 3 Mrs. Hurst's typing class is ready to begin a timed writing to test their skill in speed and accuracy. Many boys, as well as girls, take typing for its personal-use value, while others plan to use it in the business world. COMMERCE Subject matter alone does little in the way of finishing the product and since Com- mercial subiects play a large part in the life of the student of today, the business classes of SOC strive to fill the need for accuracy and skill in all of the Business subiects in- cluding Shorthand, Typing, Business Training and Book- keeping. These popular courses form the backbone of Business Training now of- fered. Miss Pickens Shorthand i class gives promise of producing some able stenographers as shown by these studious gurls I, rd - ,...,.. ,..f-f-M fu Under the direction of Mr. Brantley, the Boys' Gym teacher, the boys are doing a push-up exercise prior to activity. Members of the Dallas County Medical Association have presented many interesting dis- cussions to the students. Some of the subiects discussed have been mental health, skin, public health, emergencies, and broken bones. In the picture Dr. J. S. May is leading a discussion on mental health. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The value of any area of endeavor is its power for the enrichment of life. Physical Education meets this test of worth as it contributes to the optimal development of the innate capacities of the pupil - physical, mental, moral, emotion- al, and social. Properly selected physical activ- ities foster interests, knowledges, and skills that fuse continuously to fulfill the needs of the student. rd Here, one of Mr. Brantley's Gym classes is busy at a game of basketball. It seems that everyone is getting into the act. Exercises are given at the beginning of every Physical Education class. The exercises are of various types and develop flexibility, strength, agility, and coordination. m,,,Gz f , , , SOUTE5 4 B CLASS OFFICERS EDGAR WARD ..................................
