Through these twenty-nine years the growth of this association has been steady and constant. We report this year a membership of over three hundred active members. The President of the association is a messenger from the association to the faculty, and by a close contact with the latter learns the needs of the various departments of the schoolg then she turns the responsibility of the work to the respective departments. 'l There are six departments in the organization with chairmen under the super- vision of each department head. The departments are as follows: l QU Organization Department which is supervised by Mrs. S. Hetherington. The department's duty is to take all responsibility concerning the membership, com- munication, service, courtesy, and transportation of the club. QZJ Program Service Department whose head is Mrs. NW. A. Leeper. This de- partment's duty is to provide for the year book, entertainments, refreshments, prografms, and decorations. 135 Public Welfare Department which is supervised by Mrs. Whipker. This department's duty is to make decisions concerning the juvenile Protection, Girls' Stu- dent Loan and Thrift, and Adamson Loan Fund. 141 Educational Department is supervised by Mrs. R. F. Henderson. This de- partment's duty is to promote and sponsor art, music, R. O. T. C., scholarship, and library work. fij Health Department is directed by Mrs. S. Cogburn. This department's duty is to sponsor athletics, social and student hygiene, and physical education in the school. f6j Efficiency Department is supervised by Mrs. C. C. Jones. The duty of this department is to take care of finances, house and ground problems, magazines, and matters of publicity. As a result of the function of each department the various phases of the school work are properly cared for. The girls and boys of high school age certainly need unlimited help through counselors, guides, and real friends, and the Oak Cliff High School and its organiza- tions fill this necessity. Ability to guide wisely at this time is a real test of parent- hood. The High School Parent-Teacher Association can be made a clearing house for ideas in developing the character and growth of youth. This organization endeavors to assist parents who are poorly acquainted with the aims of the many interesting educational activities of the modern high school. We stress the co-operation between the school and the home in daily study preparation. We strive to have our school head the list of the six high schools in the city by reduc- ing the number of absentees and tardies. One of our two outstanding objectives is to promote scholarship among the stu- dent body. This phase of ouriwork is emphasized in our meetings and through the co-operation of the teachers. Our association endeavors to increase the members of the Scholarship Club by giving parties and entertainments for those who achieve the honor of membership in the club. We offer a cash prize to the underclassman who attains the highest average for each semester. Another of our main objectives is to supervise the welfare work in the school. This work is being promoted through the continued co-operation of Miss Graves with the Parent-Teacher Association. With the zeal and energy already manifested in the past by the faculty, student body, and parents there is all evidence that the work of the association can attain a still higher level. The Dads' Club in Oak Cliff High is a very active organization which works for the, welfare of the school. There are fifty-one active members in the club. i .if We O0 AUAMSQN, W. H. We We We, shall think of your faculty so loving and true, shall think of its patience in seeing us through, There was our own faculty to brace us-to make u We've had so many good times within your walls, So many laughs when walking down your halls, So much fun on your campus, so many joys, Never realizing how fortunate--just girls and boys. Although your doors to us be flung open wide That joy we once had will ever more be denied- That joy of freedom and fellowship with youg May we leave a message with your students true? Secretary otiomz! Honor Society No honor conferred' by the school excels that represented by the National Hon- or Society. lt represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill or talent. Throughout history man has recognized the value of such distinction and in one way or another has marked for special hon- or those who excel. Ancient and medieval universities established their honor socie- ties. In modern times, the coveted honor or election to Phi-Beta Kappa outranks all other distinctions in universities. In your election to the National Honor Society, the faculty is honoring you for the attainments you have already made, and is show- ing its faith in you that you will continue to excel and thus cherish the ideals of this school. X The Constitution of this national organization recognizes four cardinal princi- ples as fundamental in all educational practices: Scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Not more than 15 per cent of any 4A class, not more than 10 per cent of any 4B class, and IIOK more than 5 per cent of any' 3A class may be elected into the so- ciety. Any active member who falls below the standards which were the basis of his election to membership shall be dropped from the chapter. It is often asked how members are chosen to this organization. Grades for the first and second years are counted along with the giades of later years, and a list-of pupils is submitted to the teachers for their consideration. This convinces you that it is not the record of one year nor the opinion of one teacher that determines the election. It is rather the record you have made with every teacher you have come in contact with since the first day you entered school until the day of your election to the society. V. The Scholarship list, which varies from time to time, is made up from report cards which are issued at the end of each six weeks, and all students with an aver- age of 90 with no grade below 80 for the given division are entitled to have their names on the list. All students having an average of 90 with no grades below 80 for the year have their names recorded on the year list and receive a one-year Linz Award. Those students having a four-year average of 90 with no grade be- low 80 receive a four-year Linz Pin. An Everts' Award is given for a four-year average of 80 with no grade below 80. This club is the only one in Oak Cliff that enjoys many parties and good times without the payment of dues. The Parent-Teachers' Association of Oak Cliff High School gives the Scholarship Club an annual Christmas party, and it is not an unusual occurrence for them to serve refreshments at the meetings at the end of the six weeks. The P. T. A. also gives a cash prize to the unclerclassmen making the highest term average. Last year one award was presented in June, but this year two awards are to be presented: one at the end of each semester. The Oak Cliff High School Scholarship Club has been made the largest in Dallas through the untiring efforts of Miss Harris, Miss Hammock, Miss Bell, Miss Hamilton, and Mrs. Bramlette. In order to stimulate competition and thus increase sales, several prizes are offered To the Dallas High School group turning in the most money, a cash prize of one hundred dollars is offered. To the individual securing the most money a diamond ring is given. For the past three years Oak Cliff has won the first prize of one hundred dollars. This year, 1929, we were the happy recipients of both first prizes. Miss Alma Lena Fuqua, a first year pupil, won the diamond ring. We wish to thank Miss Morrison and the girls for the effort and energy expended in bringing these honors to Oak Cliff. Without the advice, encouragement, and co-operation of Miss Morrison, it is doubtful that the two hundred girls or more, who took part in the sale, would have felt the impulse and the desire to exert the necessary energy and Oak Cliff Spirit to have won over all the other 1 i ly 1, Dallas High Schools. So to Miss Morrison, again we wish to express a grateful-Thank You! , 1 l l w ' ' , '1 ' ' I w qw 7 0 s o o ill, V, iii l ' Q or r Dewi 6 LM -. W F. Far-seeing men have reached out for new methods to best solve their problems, discarding ideas that have outgrown their usefullness. The history of Home liconomics reveals a like development. In the early days, the idea prevalent among the majority was that Home Economics was teaching girls to cook and sew. Stress was laid on the fact that all mankind, paricularly men could be ruled through their stomachs by a beautiful lady clad in her home-made dress. A brain was considered inconse- quential. All girls who failed in other things were shoved pell-mell into a cooking or sewing class and expected to make good grades. The change has come slowly and has cxacted great labor on the part of teacher: and leaders of Home Economics. Today the girls who stand ahead in clothing classes, stand ahead in Mathematics, English, and other so-ealled cultural subjects. A good clothing student learns how to make a dress so that she may competently judge any costume home-made or otherwise. She buys wisely and systematically aryl she correlates her knowledge of clothing with civic, political, and social affairs. Home Economics has come into its own :ts .1 trainer for efficient home-makers, the biggest job that woman can find today. The world is no longer proud to boast that its women are too dumb for any- thing but plain cooking and sewing. The girls in the picture above represent a group, who in learning to construct a garment, learn many things unsuspected by the casual observer or one unlearned in the ways of Home Economics. With Wyman, a last year's lineman, at fullback, the Leopards stamped a 22 to 0 score over Grand Prairie for the first victory. The O. C. H. Blue and White team showed fine form both in run- ning and in passing in the second game of their 1929 season. The touch- down honors this time went to the speedy backfielder, jakie', Gore, and the vivid co-captain, Bill Erickson. Hindered by nine fumbles, Oak Cliff was held to a scoreless tie by the strongest Poly team in years. The first city series game gave the Leopards their first defeat of the season, at the hands of the Bulldogs, the score was 13 to 7. Oak Cliff came back with its old fight and put over its third tri- umph in five games by giving the Dallas Tech Wolves a sound beating. Doped by all sports writers as underdogs, the fighting Leopards swamped the North Side Steers by the one-sided score of 26 to 0. Again, showing form and Hght true to the tradition of Oak cliff, the Leopards defeated another Fort Worth team, the Central High Pan- thers, by a 7 to 0 victory. Against Sunset, the team won the boys' singles 6-4, 9-7, the boys' doubles, 6-3, 6-2. They lost the girls' singles, 6-1, 6-1, and the girls' doubles 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. In the next match against Woodrow Wilston, both the boys and girls won with the following scores: boys' singles 6-2, 6-2, boys, doubles 6-2, 7-S, girls, singles, 6-3, 6-4, girls' doubles 6-3, 6-4. The boys' team is composed of Hugh Freasier, Julius Truelson, and Seldon Cotton. The girls' team is made up of Phama Wright, Anna Mae Gassaway, and Natalie Sprague. The team with such a record thus far in the season looks good and these boys and girls should bring home the bacon in the shape of tennis trophies as the teams of the past led by the unconquerable Doc Barr did. Ucffi 2 ANGLLI N Mom LAND 1,11 IWICII Gom- SPPNSF MURRAY Gobf With Gus Moreland, who is Southwestern Amateur Champion, Jakie Gore, Billy Spenser, and Marc Anglen, all of whom are last year's veterans, the team appears to have quite a good chance at championship in golf this year. Fred Murray, a new comer, who has the makings of a good golfer, but lacks experience is also on the team. Mr. Leftwich, the coach, practices with the boys almost every day at Stevens Park where Gus holds the course record for low score. The team is improving each day and by the start of the season should be in fine form. There has been one practice match with Sunset in which Oak Cliff was tied by a 3-3 score. Oak Cliff defeated Forest on March 28 by a 4-2 score. we In Apprecz'atz'0n In conclusion, we wish to express on this page our grati- tude to each and every member of the faculty and student body who has in any way helped in the compiling and pub- lishing of the 1929-30 Oak. We especially wish to thank with all sincerity the fol- lowing: Mr. Hamilton for the use of his ofhceg and other members of the faculty who have made special efforts to help us in our work-Mr. Campbell, Miss Cabiness, Miss Alexander, Miss Patrick, Miss Beulah Baker, Mrs. Clements, and Mr. Hester. We also wish to extend our heartiest thanks to Miss Graves who has granted many permissions aiding the prog- ress of the Oak publication, and to Mr. Adamson who has helped so many times in various ways. Among those members of the Oak staff to whom we wish to express our appreciation, are: Lane Clifton, Myra Louise Davis, Kathryn Bourland, Billie Burke, Wilma Kin- namon, and James Judge. As everyone knows, the problem of financing the Oak is no small undertaking. Therefore, we wish to express our deepest thanks to Miss Hammock, Clark Etheridge, Howard Mays, and other members of the staff in making this pub- lication possible. To the student body as a whole, we wish to express our true gratitude for all its contributions, each and every one of which is really appreciated. As a result of the earnest efforts of the entire school, the 1929-30 Oak is completed. BEAILHMAN: For six or eight years I have aspired to be a debutante, and not until this year have I succeeded, and all because of my own carelessness. My face was covered with pim- ples, blackheads and boils. I tried to discover why I wasn't a deb, I had money, fine clothes, and cars, but all in vain. One day a friend suggested that I try Bealch- man's Yeast, and, luckily, I took her advice. This photo shows the results. After using your wonderful yeast for only three years I began to notice an improvement in my complexion, and in another year it still grew betterg now, after six years, my face shows the wonderful improve- ment you see in the picture. Now I am the life of every blowout. thanks to your yeast. Gratefully yours, OPHELIA FOOTE Ill Boyle Ave., G rand Prairie, Texas Drfxa Mk. BLLALCHMAN: Congratulations, sirruh, on your wonderful yeast. Please let me tell the public of my experienece and of your wonderful yeast. Life was all happiness for me until one day I noticed that pimples and boils had begun to cluster up my manly faceg my condition grew worse, and my job as a piano mover was in a dangerous position, but still more boils and pimples came on until I could carry only two grand pianos at a time. Then a friend, the dear chap, recommended BcaIchman's, and now I am in better condition than ever beforeg my old job as a piano mover was returned to me, and my condition is now so perfect that I can carry six pianos at a time, which is a very good trick. Yours trooley, , I. BITA DookkNoB I9 Tin Lan Alley Podunk. Texas Duma Sms: I live with my husban in the mountans here in Arkan- saw, and I use to have the rumatiz, and pimples and boils, but a friend tole me about yore yeest and it fixed me up fer good. I now go about my chores of cutting wood, building fences, feedin' cows and hogs and chick- ens, doing a little plowin' and cottin pickin', milkin' milk cows, and such triflcs daily, and all the time I'm whist- lin' tunes and sech.
