Anderson Mr. Anderson, ever friendly with the students and mindful of their welfare, stops in the hall to chat a few minutes with two senior boys, Murdock Mason and D. R. Smithson. This year lNlr. Anderson has put special stress on personal counseling and guidance with all students. He has established a precedent of holding a conference with each senior during the last term of the senior year. This has proved very profitable to both students and faculty in creating the sociable atmosphere which surrounds our school. XVe wish Mr. Anderson continued success in his work and in his eflorts toward maintaining the spirit of South Norfolk High School. ..n.wpw---- -........-....-.- Miss AUR1e1.1A I. ' Are they dear to us? You bet they are! However, we must admit, there were times when we weren't so sure. But now that it is time for us to leave, we realize just how dear they are, and always will be. Let us take a brief glance over the last four years of our lives, which have played so vital a role in shaping and moulding us into the good citizens we hope to become. Remember how timid and shy we were when we first entered high school in September, 1944? There were 118 of us then and Miss Lucile Scaff and Miss Carolyn Beard led us through that year. And what a momentous year it was! Rat Week! Elective subjects! Changing classes for the first time! Truly we were growing up and adjusting ourselves to high school life. Sophomores! Didn't we feel important then? Miss Anne Scott and Miss Scaffhwere given the task of gulding us through that year. We took part in many activities: joined clubs, participated in sports, attended games and went to dances. Returning to school in the fall of 1946, as juniors, we were placed under the direction of Miss Scalf and Mrs. Rose Morrisette. We elected Johnny Landers as our class president. Our dance was a big success and we were looking forward with great eagerness to the next year, which was to be our last. Seniors! Remember how thrilled we were? We chose Miss Bessie Mae Paxson and Mrs. Lottie Waters as our sponsors and they did a splendid job. As our class president, we elected David Bunch and we couldn't have had a better one. Rat 'eek we really had a line time! My, but those Freshmen looked cute! And weren't we thrilled when our pins and rings came? Our prom was a success and remember how nicely our play was put over? Yes, we remember, and our hearts are heavy and sad now, but they will be lightened by happy memories of these years. BETTY Mites ....l,-. Life's Road to Success I.ife's highway is long and hard It has its ups and downs, It leads to igger, better things So follow on unbound. The tiring journey gives us rest To those who travel on, So vow yourself to do the best And tire not till it's won. The goal to be is happiness, Success awaits there too, So dig right in and do your best, And you will win it too. Do your best day by day In things you do and say, And you will lind some time to play Along life's highway. Bossv Hoxnsucxts Editor-in-Chiq' Senior Class OHicers DAVIIJ BUNCH ...... ...... SENIOR PLAY On April 2, ISHS, the Senior Class presented theirclass play, Sing for Your Supper, a rollicking comedy by Anne lVlartens. Most of the plot centered around Stephen Brown who was torn between being a crrmnfr and a composer of classical music. His life really became complicated when he applied to the school board for a position as a music teacher. He then went to live in the home of Nr. Piper, a school board member. He was plagued by the easily infatuated daughters of the family, whose boy friends helped to further complicate the comedy by their plots to divert the girls' attention from the crooner. The climax of the play was reached when Stephen decided upon crooning as a career and proposed to Susan, the most sensible of the Piper daughters. MR. Pk Pk Pk The blue and white Tigers suffered only two setbacks this season, one of them at the hands of the champion SuH'olk Red Raiders and the other by a strong Matthew-Whaley eleven from Williamsburg. The Tigers were not defeated in Cascade Park this year. The Tigers, playing host to Cradock before one of the largest crowds of the season, avenged last year's tie by defeating the Admirals with a victory margin of 20-0. The Tigers took no mercy on Cradockg they hit hard with Nick Johnson, lilzie Jernigan, Gary Farmer, and Emmett Sawyer crossing the final stripe for scores. In their first defeat of the '47 season the Tigers were set back 18-0 by the Suffolk Red Raiders. The game was played in Peanut Park during a steady rain. The Raiders struck early, scoring all three touchdowns in the first half. The Tigers held in the last half, but it was too late and the Tigers bit defeat. Scoring almost at will in the game with Portlock, the Tigers were at their peak as Gary Farmer took the opening kick-off back down the sidelines 90 yards to pay dirt. It was a scoring parade as the Pioneers were outclassed by the fiashy Tigers. johnson, Landers, Cooper, Seymour, and Hardison, along with Farmer's two, took care of the scoring as Smith Norfolk rolled to an easy 45-0 victory. In their second defeat, playing in a steady rain at Williamsburg, the Tigers took an early lead as johnny Landers scored in the first quarter. lt was short-lived, however, on the kick-off a Whaleyan player raced all the way to tie the score at 7 all. It happened to be a tie game, but Matthew-Whaley scored 20 seconds before the final whistle and the game ended 13-7. Aside from these games the Tigers played excellent ball in their other games. A fighting Poquoson eleven held the Tigers to a 13-0 victory but the blue and white boys took the rest of the games in stride, including such victories as a 40-7 score over the Churchland Truckers and a 37-6 win over Kempsville. The Tigers over- whelmed Holy Trinity I8-G, Great Bridge-Hickory 28-6, and Oceana 20-0 in the other games of a good season. It was a wonderful season for South Norfolk's Tigers. Students of the high school and fans of South Norfolk can be proud of them as they rolled up 234 points to their opponents' 02. TIGERS PLACE THREE ON ALI,-'I'IDFWA'l'FR i M. Mason il. Landers H. It's not only the important, interesting work I do. It's the good salary, the people I meet and a lot of other things. I hadn't had any business experience, but I was well paid right from the start. And regular, frequent raises in pay have come as I've gained experience. Something else I like about telephone work is the bright, pleasant environment. The oHices are so clean and comfortable. There's a roomy lounge where we can relax during off-duty hours. Then there's the friendly atmosphere that seems to go with a telephone job. I can hardly count all the new friends I've made since I started there. Just between you and me, I wouldn't trade jobs with anyone!
