THE SENIOR CLASS of SOUTH NORFOLK HIGH SCHOOL Presents xXXMMliI'Il1l1I: kg, T I G' ff QUUIOY 7 Q 4 South Norfolk High Schoolff1947 Our high school building of today is a great improve- ment over the building that accommodated the high school students twenty-five years ago. Rapid growth of the student body made the erection of the present building necessary in 1929. The old building is a part of the present elementary school plant. Construction ofthe new school building, complete with a modern gymnazium, a large and attractive auditorium, and laboratories, was a significant mile-stone in the progress of education in the City of South Norfolk. 5.40 P 15111 CAT UN In guiding us through our senior year, he was a friend as well as adviser, proving his interest in our activities through the cooperation and ready aid he gave so willingly. He shared our disappointments as well as our conquests and was always dependable. With a deep feeling of gratitude the Senior Class of ,47 dedicates the 25th Edition of THE TIGER to . . . MR. J. WM. FTHHRIDGIQ Forewor . . . In this, the 25th Edition of Tm: TIGER,', we have attempted to bring about an awareness of the advancements made in school life since the publication of the first Tiger to the present day. In spite of the changes the years have wrought, new faces have only replaced the old, and these changes have not altered our standards, but rather raised them to a higher level. Each year left its mark upon our school with the wisdom and knowledge that only time can bring. Through the very halls that the students trod then, pass today's generation, fortified with the lessons learned through experience. We sincerely believe that these past 25 years have been good years, progressive years, and with this as our theme we have strived to show the fruits that they have produced. WA'rr:Rs. . . . .Fzzrnllpv .w'1z'vi.wr.v Three years ago another cog in the school's wheel of progress was added with the formation of t'ie Student Council. The forward movement indicated the school's awareness and appreciation of the fact that students should have strong voice in student affairs, also the fact that the school had confidence in the sound logic and capabilities of the students. During the past school session the Student Council promoted a campaign for maintaining the school's reputation as one of the cleanest schools in the Tidewater area. During the Christmas season the Council sponsored useful baskets for needy people of the community. The Council was instrumental in persuading members of the student body to refrain from walking in the streets, thus cooperat- ing with the city safety program. At the end of the school session elections were held for choosing next year's Council olheers. 'lihe entire nomination and election proceedings were conducted in a manner that follows the pattern of our eountry's national elections. Such a system makes the students understand and appreciate more fully the democratic nietlnfd tal- electing leaders. u -wma N,.,,n' 'F-QQ l ir.vI row, lgft to righ1.' The one loss to the Suffolk High School Red Raiders was witnessed by a capacity crowd of fans who anticipated one of the best games in the Tigers' history. An ac- count of the game reads like an excerpt from the annals of professional football. The Tigers took the opening kick-off on their 20-yard line and carried the ball to their 25 where they elected to punt. Harry Farmer was poised on his 20 to punt when Annus, Suffolk guard and co-captain, broke through to block the kick. The ball rolled into the end zone where Annus fell on it for a touchdown. The Tigers took the kick-off on their 10 and immediately began a 90-yard drive to pay-dirt with Neil Phelps, Gene Mason and Harry Farmer alternating in running the ball. On the Suffolk 20 Gene Arrington, SEASON IN YEARS Tiger quarterback, flipped a pass to end Cosby -lones. -lones lateraled to Phelps who swivel-hipped his way 20 yards to score standing. Amid the wild cheers of the enthusiastic fans sub-quarterback .lohnnie Landers went in and calmly split the up- rights with his placement. That's the way the scoring stood at the halfASouth Nor- folk 7, Suffolk fi. Shortly after the second half got under way a clipping penalty put the Tigers in the shadow of their own goal post. Farmer was standing in the end zone to punt when Sugolkls Annus once again broke through the defense to block the punt. That time Bobby VVhite, Tiger guard, expertly gather- ed in the ball for an automatic safety. The scoreYSuFfolk 8, South Norfolk 7. Quarterback Arrington unloaded the full might and fury of the Tigers' aerial attack in the last quarter, completing 10 passes out of I0 attempts. They con- tinued passing until they reached the Suffolk 20 where they lost the ball on a fumble. Suffolk made no gains and punted to the Tigers' 20. The Tigers passed to the 25, then to the 30, working against time. With time for only 2 plays Arrington pulled the Tigers' now-famous double- center pass play. CThe Tigers used that play 5 times and scored on it 5 times.l Arrington faded back to his 20, leaped into the air, and shot a pass to half'-back Mason. Mason gathered the ball into his arms on the mid-field stripe, picked up 2 blockers, and scampered 50 yards to score, but it was nullified by a disputed clipping penalty. I With the final whistle Suffolk High School was still leading 8 to 7. il! if ik A small but scrappy Cradock eleven stunned the local sports world as it held the fast, heavy Tiger team to a scoreless tie at the Portsmouth Stadium before an amazed crowd of 1,128 night fans. The Tigers rolled up 14 first-downs, com- pleted 6 of 7 passes, and gained 248 net yards rushing. In midfield they clicked like a polished machine only to bog down as they neared the goal line. Cradock played the entire game with their backs to the goal posts, making one goal line stand after another. The scrappy Admirals registered 2 Hrst- downs, completed 1 of 11 pass attempts, and gained 96 net yards running. l 00'l'BA l,l, CHEER LEA DERS lajfl fn rilelzl: David Bunch, Mary Virginia Leggette, Ruth Christensen, .-Xmlrew Smith. Opening their '-Hi-'47 season against Alexander Park before I1 capacity crowd the Tigers scored an impressive victory that gave promise of a highly successful and entertaining season. They completed their pre-Christmas play undefeated and undisputed leaders in their district and class. The South Norfolk cagers continued their winning streak after the holidays and ran their total to I0 straight victories. The Tigers met their first defeat of the season in lfeluruary at Cradock High School. It was Cradock who handed the Tigers hoth of their regular season losses and hy identical scores, 36-33. Cradock went undefeated. Both games were mark- ed by hard playing, good sportsmanship and enthusiastic crowds in high tension. Gene Arrington was captain ot' the '4fi- '47 Tiger quint. Coach Metheny, humiliated by such a shellacking, silently vowed revenge in the next meeting of the teams. The Tiger I.
