PROPHECY 1943 We are back at our posts as secretaries to Senators Runwell and Hope after their brief flight to South Norfolk to the 10th Anniversary Alumni Dinner. When we left Washington on the plane we were filled with joy at the thought of returning to our home and seeing old friends. VVe were pleased to find Jeanette Hatchell, a file clerk at Dunn and Bradstreet, on the same plane. VVe arrived at the Norfolk Airport and were greeted by Emily McPherson and Rose Marie Harris. Emily informed us that she is now private secretary to her father in the Navy Yard. She is happily making plans for her approaching marriage to a captain at Camp Pendleton. Rose Marie was enthusiastic about the plans she and Elizabeth Rock are making concerning the opening of their new dress shop on Granby Street. We drove straight from the airport to the Monticello Hotel, which is now under the management of Aubrey Worrell. As we entered the Starlight Room we were struck by the exquisite decorations. We complimented Aubrey but he told us that the credit really belonged to Shirley Twine, who sent the flowers from her exclusive flower shop, and Christine Vilhite, from whose Decorating Salon came the staff of decorators. We were glad to see june Bonney White, now teaching Chemistry at South Norfolk High School, and Ann VVilder, who is coaching at our Alma Mater. Aubrey told us that Ray Sykes dropped in that morning. He was on his way to Petersburg to make arrangements for a funeral. We also learned that june Tavenner, Alma Nolan, and Thomas Stallings would be in later on a chartered plane after their evening's performance in that smash hit, The Boys Came Back. However, they were represented by their publicity photographer, Eugenia VVickens. Eleanor Curling, ace news reporter for the Ledger-Dispatch, who was there to write up the banquet, told us that Vivian Forehand had opened a beauty salon with Dorothy lilorehand as adviser. As we sat down to dinner, Helen jackson and Virginia Myers, social workers, came in with Emmett Holt, news commentator for YVTAR and Guy Boyette, that very successful author of the book Look and Let Live. Seated across the table was Frances Leet, Hoor walker at Grant's Ek Co., and james Russ, president of Russ Meat Packing Co. Sitting next to him was Calvin Lane, the famous artist, and his model, Ethel Harper. There was a hush and then a cheer as Amos Lee, now managing Tatem's Pharmacy, proposed a toast to the health and happiness of one and all. Attorney jefferson Davis then made a speech. He is a very successful lawyer due to the competence of his eflicient secretary, Vivian Dail. Entertainment for the evening was furnished by Geraldine Maples and her orchestra, with Edward Bryant as vocalist. Also on the program was Dorothy Winslow, just back from a world tour. She is in Norfolk Filling an engagement at the Plaza Royal, the new 350,000 theater recently completed by Alvin Yavner, who informed us that Margueritte Smith is his secretary. ln the course of the evening we received a telegram from Elizabeth Lowe, who is married and residing in South Carolina. lt was getting late and many had to leave. Mrs. Sterling Harrell, the former Marjorie Leet, said good night, explaining that she had to hurry home to the children. A few of us were still gay and with sleep far from our eyes, we adjourned to Virginia Costenls restaurant La Main de la Ruefl Here we found Evelyn Cain as cashier, and Ruth Kerton as head waitress. While talking over old times, Ray Long, who is now coaching the undefeated Commodores at Maury, came in for a midnight snack. He expressed delight at seeing us and quickly reviewed some highlights of the game that had kept him from the banquet. VVe were especially interested in the game because VVilliam Benton was coaching the opponents. The next day before leaving for the airport, we stopped in S. S. Kresge's and found Gloria Bryant, who is now head of the ofiice staff. life explained to her that we must hurry to catch our plane and so we were off to the airport after a Vai mlm, able Visit homh -LOUISE MORGAN and JEAN BRINSON.
