Aren't you scared? You should be, because all the ghosts, gobblins, and black cats are out. It's Halloween. ?-Who shall furnish music for Senior Dance? Due to matters beyond our control, we were unable to have Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, etc., so we decided to have Don Val, as his prices fitted our pocketbook better. School closed today for Armistice Day. The last football game of the season, and boy, what a season! Professor Langley and his twenty-four piece orchestra present a dance. Tiger Frolics-Fun, frills and frivolity-our students go night clubbing-lots of fun!! War Declared-Remember Pearl Harbor and those dirty little Japs. Senior rings arrive and Basketball begins oHicially. Celebration Everywhereg Everyone planning what he will and will not do in the coming year. Remember last night-VVell don't forget those resolutions you made. VVake up sleepy head, the holidays are over and exams are drawing near. First snow and everything covered in ice, but work on the Annual must continue, so Sterling borrowed a car and took some girls to Norfolk to solicit ads. Slipping was the order of the day. The last holiday before exams, Robert E. l.ee's birthday. Senicir asslelmbly. Those old days with Jane as a teacher. And those bright students, la. a.. There wasn't even standing room when we played the Final game and won the Tide- water Basketball Championship. O. K. You are on your own now. Exams! Are Here! A new time begins. New life, vigorous and ambitious to do better work, Motto for everyone. Have you seen it? Of course, the new electric score board. Valentine. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? The team traveled to Fredericksburg to seek higher basketball honors, we won. The team and the usual fans traveled to Lexington to play the last basketball game of the season. We won and became the State Class B Champions. The Juniors tried to put something over on the Seniors when they gave their dance, but did they? No, they can't do it, can they Seniors? Baseball practice begins. Lorraine B. stole the show when the Senior Class presented June Mad. Everyone remembers that boring assembly Miss Redd presented with all those long speeches. Easter Monday-A good day for an egg hunt, don't you think? All of us are so excited because we made plans for our Senior Prom. Thanks to Mr. Anderson we had a free movie this afternoon. May Day a great success with all its spring loveliness. The gym decorated as a garden, the lights dimmed, and Clark Godfrey playing soft music makes a perfect setting for our Senior Prom. The Annual must go to press and l would like to mention some of the things we are all looking forward to: Senior Banquet, Class Night, Days and Nights of great expectations! Baccalanneate Sermon. The Seniors grow serious for a great occasion. Commencement Exercises. We walk into the great unknown-whither shall we go? 1942 CLASS HISTORY N SEPTEMBER, 1938, a group of one hundred and thirty, childish, giggling, little freshmen, including the writer entered high school under the guidance and control of Miss Myrtle Smith and Miss Vinnie Mae Davis. VVe learned the ways and rules of the High School and were on our way to seek our aims in life. A few groups of timid freshmen were seen loitering near the walls of the gynmasium at the Senior dance that year. After we had become accustomed to the rules of the Freshman, we did very nicely indeed. VVe adapted ourselves to the school activities and were eager tO learn a great deal of knowledge, under our faithful teachers. Examinations came and our first year was completed with no major calamities. With only a few vacancies in our midst we advanced into our Sophomore year. We found this year's work harder than before and began to realize our respon- sibilities. Although we had the watchful guidance of our exceedingly faithful teachers, the examinations proved to be very complicated for some of our fellow students, who didn't quite make the grade. We learned that being a sister class to the Seniors added grave responsibilities to our usual carefree lives. As we entered our Junior year, we began, to feel more important all the time. XVe were all outrageously excited about the Junior activities we were to take part in. Our Junior dance was a marvelous success. At the end of the year many were forced to withdraw along the wayside. Some of the students preferred marriage to graduation. - We entered our Senior year with a great determination to get through, if we had to give up many pleasures and pastimes. We now have as our final teachers, Miss Rose Davis and Mrs. Martha Lindsay. VVe gave our Senior Dance on December 19, our Class Play on March 17,-and our Senior Prom on May Sth. It is now the eve of our graduation and we will soon be marching out to meet the world. We hope that each Senior will be successful in whatever profession he may undertake. There are many kinds of work that must be done now. Our school has laid the foundation for a long and useful life for each one of us. We shall go out with strong courage and keep devotion to carry out the splendid ideals for which our country stands. -LILLIE BELLE MOONEY SENIGR CLASS WILL E, the Senior Class of the South Norfolk High School, South Norfolk, Virginia, being of sound and disposing mind, do hereby make, publish and declare, this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills by us at any time heretofore made. Florence and Helen, may their kind in- crease In helping others lind their peace From far New York a message comes That they are workers in the slums. Before microscopes we lind The greatest biologists of all time No Hower or bug can come their way But that, Digger and George will have their say. Fair Vonice Pugh, your future spells A great career, the sign foretells A job to write short stories true Don't let the task discourage you. True to their early high school dreams Their plans have all come true, it seems Two stern and solemn parsons now The Reverends Doughtie. and Anderson make their bow. Marion Deshields, happy, carefree girl, VVith flashing eyes and hair acurl A nurse I'm sure we'll all get sick And ask for Marion as our pick. Glenn Branche next on the list Has become the great ventriloquist He owns a Punch and Judy show. His tongue is always on the go. An orator Let's right the wrongs. Arthur Bunton shouts to the throngs He waves his arms, his eyes Hash iire To save the world is my desire. Now Evelyn married the business man WVho worked the live long day Dorothy is his secretary Who works and does not play. There's one more fortune in the potg The best and longest of the lot I wonder whose this one can be Let's open it and we shall see. Ah! this is one for South Norfolk High Wlhat do the oracles prophesy? Its first and foremost aim shall be To seek the truth as endlessly As education in the past Has used this goal and hung on fast To those true aims which make men free And strengthen our democracy. To give to each and every child VVho through its spacious portals filed That equal chance of happiness Which comes from putting to the test The talents with which he's endowed, No other aims will be allowed. Its courses, then will give free minds To win the struggle of our times, To tell the wrong from what is right And give to all a nobler life A better school in years to come When all proclaim, Your work's well done. VVhen boys and girls can later say I helped to make our school that way. -SARAH MARGARET ROGERS FEATURES GF 1 942 Bm?
