We wish especially to express our ap- preciation to those of our friends, who by kind words and other means of encourage- ment, made our task deligthful. This work is the result of team work on the part of the Staff, Classes, Principal and Faculty. The development of this spirit has been a source of pleasure and profit to everyone interested in the school. We have faithfully tried to portray in one volume, life in our school. Nineteen ,, 1'A A ,. , Vql ,M H ,lli ,,.. , ........,., , I A I - 1 , TI ER E rea-ii - J HIS for Y of 23 PREFACE presenting this History of 1923, it is our endeavor to , give you an accurate account of the trials and disappoint- ments, as well as the joys and success of our Class during our four years in High School. In actual words, our His- tory may be brief, but we hope to have left behind us more in the things we have done than mere words can express. With this, the end of our High School life, we do not end our History, but each of us in a dif- ferent way will carry on his ambitions and make for himself new re- cords in broader fields of accomplishment. CHAPTER I Twenty-seven pupils graduated from South Norfolk Grammar School in May, 1919. The following September, the majority of these started in the great realm of High School which was altogether dif- ferent from the seven preceding years. Here four members of our pres- ent class waited to join us, Pattie Smith, Dorothy Manley, Ella Mae Jernigan and Claud Rountrey. New terrors confronted us and we were constantly baffled by the unknown letters X and y. Also a new language loomed before us and our tongues were twisted in geometrical figures wheniendeavoring to pronounce these weird words. However, we were brave Freshmen who, though scorned and made sport of by the Sophs, were determined to conquer all difficulties. Our second year found us to be Sophs,,' but our class was somewhat decreased since some of our members were unable to withstand' those powerful exams of High School. Elva Hedly found that she liked our Virginia High Schools better in so many ways than those of Rhode Island, she decided that she would join our class and remain here with us. Through this year we passed with less embarrassment and more pride. The idea of no longer being Rats was divine. We were in- deed Sophisticated Foolsf, At the beginning of our junior Year, we welcomed and pledged fidelity to Mr. G. C. Outland, our new principal. The one important event of this year occurred in the Commencement Exercises of 1922, Twenty , , fn V S 4 :prim gg? iman ...ti.,ffC' ,Ji f www 'age-s-rf.. The Junior Class Representatives distinguished them- selves by successfully taking very important roles. We now have most of our junior Class as Seniors and also in- creased by one new member-Theophrastus Proimakis. At last we have reached the goal of our ambition. We are now Seniors, how proud and dignified we are! This year Hnds us, as it should, successfully provided with a splendid debating team and good athletics. All the members of the Senior Class are on the Annual Staff with their as- sistants from the junior Class. Our Senior Play- Pattie Makes Things Hum was given and proved a great success. For the first time in the history of our school We have gotten out an Annual- The Tiger. We consider it our greatest achievement, and it is our greatest desire that it may meet with your approval. We are now prepared to start on our journey in the higher realm of knowledge. If, in trying to relate the true incidents and events in our class, I have been so fortunate as to have aroused your interest, then my task as Class Historian has been accomplished. As I sat awaiting the rise of the curtain upon a play that I had not yet seen, for some reason the present slipped away quickly. I found myself thinking, not of the past ten years, spent in Civil Service at Washington, but of the South Norfolk High School, and was it a vision or was I actually in the School Auditorium sur- rounded by my classmates of 1923? As I sat pondering the question, the curtain arose, and there on the stage stood an enormous bridge nearing completion, making two large cities one. The only character who impressed me among the numbers in the distance was my old class mate, Claud Rountrey, the young architect of this gigantic work. SCENE ll. As the bridge shifted from my vision, another scene formed before me, A room filled with small children, all occupied and intensly interested in their work. I looked around, anxious to see who T wenty-tw0 E 1' -5-Zig? , -W 1 . f A ' 0 , 1 H ,,--afnflif' A ', a 2: f A15 .W , , ...fi . f'R'51?',,i . . Eta gilt Www. Q Mfref. . - f e could be the person so capable of creating a perfect atmosphere of order and industry in a school room, and there stood my class mate Pattie Smith, the central and dominant figure in the teaching and con- ducting of this model school room. SCENE III. Again the scene changed and upon the stage ap- peared what seemed at first to be a conglomeration of paints, posters and manuscripts. As the objects became more distinct, I found there Leah Berman painting, suddenly she transferred her work to the op- posite side of the room, and there I saw Virginia Walker busily writ- ing the book for which Leah was illustrating. These two class mates of mine formed an excellent unit in their work together. SCENE IV. This impressive scene faded into a court room filled with men and women who appeared to be intensely interested in the lawyer arguing his case. Something in his manner attracted my at- tention, I looked again and found this outstanding figure to be my class mate Theophrastus Proimakis who joined us in 1922 at the be- ginning of the school term. SCENE V. This court room gradually changed its character and as I gazed on the scene, a group of small children appeared before a judge and she was questioning them attentively and carefully. As the scene became more vivid, I found that the judge whose understand- ing was so clear was our class president, Rosalind Harrell. SCENE VI. After this I closed my eyes and wondered if it could all be true, looking up, there was a room furnished very beautifully and there were many ladies who were centered around the hostess. As the crowd moved on, I discovered that it was Ella Mae Jernigan, my class mate of '23, who was giving a reception in her Washington home, to a group of Diplomats and their wives. SCENE VII. A pause followed the scene which lasted for a few minutes. When the curtain arose there flashed before my eyes a strange setting. I saw the outlines of a building and as the scene grew clearer, I recognized upon the porch of this building, a group of foreign child- ren, and in the midst of this group sat a teacher, my old friend, Doro- T wenly-three , , ...I . V I i E, TIGER f Ig thy Manley, who had realized her ambition in her mission to these foreign children. As she taught them another figure approached the group from the doorway and spoke to Dorothy, and then I realized that the building was a hospital and the children were the patients being cared for under the teaching of Dorothy and the medical atten- tion of my class mate, Elva Hedly. SCENE VIII. As the walls of the hospital faded away and while awaiting the rise of the curtain, strains of music burst upon my hear- ing. The curtain rose and there on the stage was an unusually large orchestra being led by my class mate, Ruby Gordon, the leader of this famous, world renowned orchestra. As the final curtain descended and I made my way back to my own duties, I had a strange feeling of satisfaction that I had seen my friends and class mates, each successful in the things he, or she wanted most to do.
