D . l I ' Y Ontarlo and became supermtendent of thls company s xast and sprawl mg portlon whxch had prevlously been the Buffalo and Lake Huron Rallroad Then m Nlarch 1866 he was lecalled to Nlontreal to take charge as Chlef Engmeer of all the Imes of the Grand Trunk lymg east and south of Montreal and the St Lawrence Rlver Out ln Amerxca s turbulent Whd West when the pnoneel Hanmbal and St Joseph Rall Road 1858 had returned ample proof that It was a very valuable and a profit maklng enterpuse men of v1s1on seekmg means for the lnvestment of thelr mountmg cap1tal foresaw the wisdom of estabhshmg feeder hnes for and to the western termmus or ra1l head of thls throughvxay The Mlssourx Valley Rall Road Company was or gamzed at St Joseph ID 1867 to tap the area lmmedlately north of that lusty c1ty up the r1ch valley of the 102 Rzver and was chartered by the sought out the best man ava1lable to lay out and bumld their project and Mr Barnard, now matured and wxth nearly two decades of experxence was chosen and was lured or coaxed from Canada to the western frontxer by hlgher wages and a goodly share xn the ownershlp of the venture As Supermtendent of Constructlon he xmmedxately xnstxtuted work on a full blown scale at the glgantlc task of creatlng a new rallway flung northward from St Joseph mto the fertxle reg1on whxch had been well settled for a quarter century but whxch had ln the ways of trans portatlon been served only by a few mean and poor wagon H3113 Much of the crop land was under cult1vat1on though m a pr1m1t1xe way and quxte a number of excellent orchards had well matured As construction of The NIISSOUFI Vallev Rall Road came up the valley floor of the 102 Rlver, along xts 100 feet wlde rlght of way ac quned by purchase 1n large part dependent on 3 mlle sub contracts 1 ' Y ' . . , , . I bu1ld stock yards As concelved and planned by Nlr Brady ffor Mr Barnard though more than amply competent xx as contlnually much too buss at overseelng the ra1l l1ne s fabr1cat1on to add th1s chore personall to his other heavy dutxes7 the new town was made up of 36 blocks comprlsmg 291 lots Its desmn and map were finlshed and offi lallv filed 22 Apr1l 1870 A normal block IH Barnard measures 264 feet east and west and 276 feet north and south and contalns e1ther 8 or 12 lots Each of the streets IS 66 feet Cone cham or 4 rods 3 vude and most of the alleys have a wxdth of 16 feet both were and are of course as cus tomarxly dedlcated to the pubhc The sectlon l1ne between Sectlons 14 and 15 Townshxp 62 North Range 35 West and the east west quarter SBCtlOD l1ne of Sect1on 14 cut across and corner ln our school yard Wh1Ch orlgmally was 1ntersected by both an east 1 est street and an alley these were vacated by court order 8 Feb 1884 The usual sales prlce per lot then was 3550 O0 and many of the parcels found ready buyers though some few were sold by the Assoc1at1on ln wh1 h Mr Barnard contmued to hold hls full share and an actlve lnterest as late as 1878 Bu1ld1ngs for stol es and shops and resldences and servlces sprang up lmmedlately IH 1870 and the US Postoffice was removed from Pralrle Park and renamed Barnard on 3 March 1871 In the Fed eral Census of 1880 Barnard s populat1on was 424 Grant Townshxp s IH habxtants had lncreased ln number from 1105 1n 1840 to 1858 an all tlme hlgh ID 1880 The pr1nc1pal east xx est street 1n Hopkms and an Add1t1on on the west to 'NIa1tl'1nd are known to be 1 'N11 Barnald s name as evldence of h1S far Hung and v1gorous act1v1t1e Too, one mav well congecture that m Iillal respect he conferred hls mother s malden name on the 3unct1on po1nt of The Vxlllsca Branch 1n Holt County When the NI1ssour1 Vallex . - v . ' , ' - S. w v . . . , . . . and the Councll Bluffs Sz St Joseph Rall Roads were consolldated he remalned wxth the enlarged company as chlef englneer and assumed charge of constructlon of the segment between Maryvllle and Hopkms 1871 S1multaneously he became chxef engmeer and supermtendent of the St Joseph and Denver Clty Rall Road and 50 mxles of thxs lxne were bullt under hxs supervxslon For elght years follomng 1872 hxs prmcxpal mterests were wlth the Kansas Cxty St Joseph and Councll Bluffs Raxl Road which was purchased by the Chlcago Burlm ton and Qulncy Raxlroad Company rn 1880 Then Mr Barnard was made general man ager for thls d1v1s1on of the Burlmgton and he continued ln thxs posx tlon untll October 1886 besldes wozklng also from July 1881 as gen eral superlntendent of the bt Joseph and Des Moxnes Rall Poad and from the autumn of 1884 as general manager of the Hannxbal and St Joseph Rall Road as well Then from October 1886 to October 1892 he was presldent and general manager of the Ohm and 'XI1ss1ss1pp1 Rallroad Company Subsequently for five years he was rece1ver of the Omaha and St Louis Rall Road now the Wabash From January 1897 for the ensu mg four years he was also re elver of the St Clalr NIad1son and St Louls Belt Rall Road and when th1s property was returned by the courts to the ownmg company he became 1ts pres1dent Nleanwhxle he had also held several dlrectorshlps secretary and treasurershrps of the St Joseph Umon Depot Company and had served as presxdent of the Atch on Umon Depot and Rall Road Company and as presxdent of the Umon Stock Yards Company at St Joseph By warranty deed on 29 May 1875 Mr Barnard purch sed Lots 1 to 10 mclusxve ln Block 9 m Wllsons Addxtlon, St Joseph from Jeff and Sarah C Chandler and two days later he bought a qu1t Clal'Y1 deed to the same hold1ngs from James B O Toole Th1s gave h1m a very splen . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .
