Here they received a 1st place in the concert competition and 6th place in both jazz and the marching competitions. The band attended 6 summer parades. They were in Milford, Sidney, Schenevus, Whitney Point, DeRuyter, and New Berlin parades. They received two 1st places, two 2nd’s and a 3rd, and a 4th place trophy. Money raised from these parades is helping to pay for new uniforms for the 1981-1982 season. When the school year started, the band was looking forward to an exciting year. On Saturday November 14, 1981, the Gilbertsville band traveled here for a “mini-ex- change”. Gilbertsville and South New Berlin band students spent the day practicing and getting to know one another. The idea of this exchange is to show that bands don’t always have to be competing . . . they can work together. An exchange, where South New Berlin travels to G’ville, is planned for the springtime. The band had two fund raisers. They sold candles and candy. Thank you for help- ing. That money will go towards the new uniforms. The uniforms have arrived and look really sharp. Come out and see the South New Berlin Indians!! We are now working on more exchanges and also on obtaining more parts for our uniforms. It looks like an- other good year!!! Junior Band 1st row: C. The record stands at 6-9 overall and 5-6 in the Tri- Valley West. Though the team still has a chance to finish with the best Southtown record in ten years, wins must come against three teams who have already defeated us, to accomplish this. Season highlights to this point have been a two point home court win over Laurens, and good performances while losing to Roxbury, Brookfield, and Springfield, three of the best Class D teams in the area. The season will hopefully conclude with at least a .500 league record and a trip to the sectionals. J. V. Varsity SNB OPP. SNB OPP. Mt. Mr. King The baseball team finished with a 6-6 league record, good for fourth place. The team won 5 straight games at one point in the season. Senior pitcher Phil Hamblett had a good year. He had a 4-1 record with a 2.20 ERA. Phil had one of the top records in the league. Junior pitcher Rodger Brown had a tough year. He ended up with an ERA of 3.30. Senior Roy Pounds and Junior Tracy Chawgo led the team with a .333 batting average. Roy also led with 15 runs scored. Roy’s performance, batting and in the field, helped him win the MVP award. Sophomore Jim Friedel had 13 hits. Sopho- more Tim Hearth led with 14 stolen bases. Seniors Roy Pounds and Kevin Funke and Junior Rodger Brown led with 3 doubles each. Juniors Tracy Chawgo and Bob Morgan and Sophomore Tim Hearth led with 2 triples. Sophomore Jim Friedel had the only home run during the year. Only losing seniors Kevin Funke (2nd base), Roy Pounds (left field), Phil Hamblett (pitcher), and Jeff Lewis, the 1982 Base- ball team should have a good year. With nearly the same team returning from a 1980 division win, prospects looked really good for a repeat of this in 1981. The team ended up with an 8-4 league record which earned them a tie for 3rd place with New Berlin. There were many positive things in this season. Sophomore, Sandy Camp, had a very good year. She lead the team with a batting average of .732 which included leading in home runs with 9, and triples with 6. Many other hitters did well also. The team batting average was .568. Team leaders in the follow- ing categories were Holly Lewis with 15 doubles and 29 runs batted in, Sandy Stensland with 26 stolen bases, and Sharon Weaver with 27 singles. A good job by Senior Mary Potter, as pitcher, helped a great deal also. She had an 8-3 record and struck out 96 batters during the sea- son. This performance earned her Most Valuable Player in softball. There was also fine display of defensive play by many players. Out- fielders Karen Jones, Sandy Camp, and Sharon Weaver and infielders Holly Lewis, Darlene Bush, Deb Pounds, Connie White, And Sandy Stensland were always stable. The team is only losing 4 graduating seniors so look for them to be tough this year!!
