DONALD G. PRESTON, Supervising Principal Principal's Message Congratulations to the Class of 1960. Your accomplishments to date have been excellent. I am happy to have shared with you in these achieve- ments. I am asked many times, Is education worthwhile? Each individual must answer this question for himself. Education is valuable only if we apply it to our daily lives. I am sure as you grow older you will answer this question with a Yes . I hope that you will find that your high school diploma is of great value to you and that your future education will be successful because of what you have learned here. Your high school education is not the end but only the beginning of your education. It will continue throughout your life whether it be formal or from daily experiences. George Peabody couldn't have created more consternation in his gay, carefree household if he had tossed a bomb in its midst. But ever since George has become a success, remodeled his house, and bought a big car, his family have thoughtlessly grown out of hand. Son Russell, sloppy and seventeen, is set on being a trap drummer, with complete indifference to his studies and graduation in June. Daughter Jeannie's dalliances are driving Suitor Claude half-crazy; and Larry, her other ardent admirer, is frantically failing at college because of Jeannie's tear-stained letters which hint at a mysterious but fatal illness. And what Grace, George's pretty young wife, knows about money you could write on the outside of Mr. Peaboby's rapidly dwindling checkbook. So, in stark desperation, George instigated the Peabody Plan and announces it to his startled family in no uncertain terms. Russell will give up drifting and drumming and settle on a real career. Jeannie must choose immediately between thrifty Claude and romantic Larry. And Grace is to balance the budget—no matter how! From that point on, it's really a Great Life—though not quite in the way Mr. Peabody expected. Russell decides to become a doctor, with the devoted assistance of cute Alice and studious Annabelle, who are willing to do his algebra and biology, hoping he will take one of them to the prom. Jeannie faints when her two swains become engaged in featherweight fistcuffs. Annabelle excitedly announces the arrival of General Custer , an old, broken-down horse Russell insists he needs for his experiments as a horse doctor! But the crowning blow comes when the rich Wunkle Sisters walk in to take possession of the Peabody home. Grace has sold it to balance the budget! There's not room to tell all. The ailing General is revived so violently that he nearly kicks down the new garage. Alice and Annabelle both get their cherished date with Russell, who is at last in earnest about a veterinary career; and Jeannie finds the real love of her life in a most amusing and unexpected way. Even Grace and George find renewed faith in the future as they dream of a little place in the country for themselves and the General. Here was the cast; Senior Jeannie Peabody is lovely, vivid, dramatic; 19 Claude Fraley takes himself and Jeannie seriously; 22 Russell Peabody, a senior, is sloppy, indifferent; 17 Annabelle, cheerful and neat, does his biology; 15 Eloise is a sturdy, healthy girl-of-all-work; 20 Grace Peabody has trouble concentrating; 38 Aurelia Audrey Wunkle is tall, long-faced; 5 0 Sophia Jane Wunkle is short, round-faced; 55 Ma Dr. Edward Appleby is handsome, lives next door; 30 George Peabody has trouble managing his family; 45 Larry Jordan, from college, is an energetic hustler; 20 Alice, bright and pretty, does Russell's algebra; 15 Miss Jacobs is Russell's exasperated teacher; 60 Mr. Pooley is a lawyer; 40 General Custer, Russell's horse; (25yrs. old) Director Everett Boise Agnes Tyler Johanne Thomsen Mary Catherine Kopko 20 Donn Dixson Rebecca Carr Joyce Kenyon Pete Tompkins Sound effects Miss Shillabeer Douglas Ezick Clifton Tamsett Sharon Warner Jerry Sebeck Jim Preston Yanna Kroes Please note; Mary C. New York State Junior Historical Association There are ninety members enrolled in the junior and senior Nathan Taylor Yorker chapters sponsored by Mrs. Johnson. The juniors from the seventh and eighth grades meet twice a month in the sponsor's homeroom at which time they study local and state history, put on plays, and carry on their business. An interesting project they are doing is to collect old and rare books and items. The seniors from the ninth through twelfth grades hold monthly meetings. Their big project for the year is the tape-recording of prominent people in the community. Along with the juniors they packed four cartons of food and goodies given to shut-ins at Christmas. The Yorkers brought glory to the school last spring by winning one of ten trophies awarded in the state. This was in recognition of the historical pageant presented in commemoration of the Year in History and our many community service projects. Rebecca Carr was elected state vice-president and district president for 1959-60. This really put our school on the map. ' ' The 1959-60 interscholastic sports teams at South New Berlin Central are having a successful season. In football the team ran up a respectable 4-2 record, good for third place in the Tri-Valley West. The team lost only to Laurens and Mt. Upton and won out over Brookfield, Milford, Guilford and G'ville. Pete Tompkins led the team in points scored (45) and total yardage (629), while Doug Friedel led in yards per carry (21.1). Skip Boise was the leading passer with 58.1%, good for 372 yards and four T.D. 's. The Varsity Basketball team has compiled a fine 9-7 record, but the 5-5 league record was only good enough for a third place finish in the strong Tri-Valley West. The J.V. shows signs of producing some fine ballplayers for the future after a 5-11 season. In varsity play there was no individual who stood out above the rest. Although Clif Tamsett was the leading scorer and Tom Pack and Bob Church the leading rebounders, the rest of the team was close behind. In J.V. competition Doug Friedel led in most departments. Both the volleyball and baseball teams should improve from their second place finishes last year. There are nine baseball and five volleyball lettermen returning, who, along with transfers and underclassmen, promise a very successful season in both sports. We started out with six girls on Junior Varsity, but unfortunately we lost two girls. Our Indian outfits were a big hit again this year. During the football season we held a pep-rally with a bonfire, everyone marched down- town and a few cheers were given, then we marched back to school. Cheers at school were climaxed with a snake dance around the bonfire. Three pep sessions were held during the basketball season, which were all successful. We would like to extend our hearty thanks to our three advisors: Mrs. Preston, Mrs. Ezick, and Mrs. Lull, who have helped to make our season a successful one. 49 Varsity Cheerleaders Sandra Wood, Patricia Wig'ntman, Dawn Minster, Ruth Ellen Jack son, Carol Nelson.
