Alma Mater In the Unadilla Valley Where our Southtown lies. Stands our noble Alma Mater, Glorious to view. South New Berlin, South New Berlin, Black and gold we love. Hail to thee our Alma Mater, South New Berlin, Hail. This year the class of 1959 dedicates their yearbook to Mr. Rappleyea, our advisor for the past two years. In dedicating this yearbook to you we are expressing our thanks for the loyal service you have given. May this yearbook serve to express our thanks for your devotion to our academic guidance and your friendly encouragement throughout our under-graduate years. May success and happiness follow you in your future. 4 MR. ERNEST G. YOUMANS District Superintendent Board Of Education ROW ONE: Mr. Linn Camp, Mrs. John McGuire, Mr. Don Peck ROW TWO: Mr. Herbert Ree’d, Clerk; Mr. Merritt Ford, Mr. Elwood Fredrickson DONALD G. PRESTON, Supervising' PrincTpol Principal's Message As you leave high school there are many thoughts going through your mind. I am sure there are both feelings of sadness and happiness. Sadness because you are leaving your friends, happiness because you have achieved some meas- ureof success in completing one of the major steps in your life. Along with these thoughts of sadness and happiness, I hope you will also stop to reflect on your future. Will it be a life of happiness and success or one of troubles, heartaches and shame? You can follow either road. It will be up to you. The road to success and happiness will be more difficult and will require much more from you. You must have self-respect and pride in the work you are doing and the kind of life you are living. A life without pride or self-respect cannot be truly successful. Best wishes to the class of 1959 for a long and successful life. Blasting Of( In 1948 fifteen space men started first grade at South New Berlin. They were: Sally Powell, Doris Olson, Pat Wood, Norma Jensen, Katherine Davis, Gail McGuire, Anne Ford, Deanna Sisson, Virginia Thomsen, Dave Christian, Harvey Deforest, Clifford Palmeter, Billy Thomsen, Billy Morgan, Clarence Beadle, and Philip May. As the space men reached second grade there was an addition of one boy and a girl. We had lost two boys. On the third trip in our ship we gained three girls and one boy. We lost only one child on this trip. By the time we had reached the fourth grade we were really flying high. This year we gained a boy and a girl. We lost three passengers; two girls and a boy. The fifth and sixth grades were much the same as the first four, gaining a few and losing a few students. The space men go on trying to prove to the teachers that they are the best group they ever had. Entering Junior High School we really felt we had accomplished something. We were joined that year by Springvale. The kids from there were: Arlene Jones, Bill Wightman, Jack Loeffler, Rachel Hadlock, Gary Cummings, Mary Tyler, Ken Jones, Jim Arnold, Dave Smith and Joan Murray. The following joined our group this same year but they did not live in the Springvale district: Bob Baldwin, Carol Pittsley, Edwin Clark, and Betty Binelli. We had twenty-seven in our class this year. In the eighth grade everyone was working hard so that we could pass our first regents. We were joined by two boys that year. In June we had our eighth grade graduation exercises. We practiced for weeks ahead of time and I am sure none of us will ever forget it. Blasting off for high school; all aboard! ! Twenty-nine started in the Freshman year. Here they are: Gail McGuire, Anne Ford, Mary Tyler, Pat Sisson, Bill Morgan, Roy Parker, Dave Smith, Ken Jones, Bob Baldwin, John Robinson, Betty Binelli, Joan Murray, Arlene Jones, Sally Powell, Catherine Noll, Barb Weidman, Norma Jensen, Doris Olson, Pat Wood, Rachel Hadlock, Jack Loeffler, Gary Cummings, Bill Wightman, Dave Christian, Kay Colton, Bob Diamond, and Jeff Miles. The Sophomore year in high school our class was joined by Dick Zeidner, Harroll Ledford and Peggy Hoffman. We lost six of our members. Our Junior year we were really riding high. Now that our space ship is ready for its final trip we have a very select crew. There are fifteen of us. Bill Rathmell joined us and we lost two girls and one boy. Mr. Rappleyea is our class advisor. Mr. Clarence Rappleyea has been our Junior Varsity Basketball coach for the past two years as well as assisting from time to time with the football and baseball teams. We all want to take this opportunity to thank him for his fine work and to wish him the much deserved success which we are sure he will experience. It has been a very pleasant ex- perience associating with Mr. Rappleyea as a fellow coach and faculty member. The best of luck. Rap, from Robert Ryan, Athletic Director, and the J. The Junior Varsity girls made their uniforms while the Varsity uniforms were made by a seamstress. During the football season we had two pep sessions and one with a parade downtown and back. The cheerleaders led four pep sessions during basketball season. After the basketball season was over the cheerleaders and advisors prepared a spaghetti supper for the basketball players, scorekeepers and coaches. The awards were given out at this time. Games and dancing were enjoyed by all. We, the cheerleaders, wish to thank our sponsors; Mrs. Preston, Mrs. Ezick and Mrs. Lull for the guidance they have given us throughout the year. 44 45 Janice Meyer , Janna Kroes, Donna Jackson, Mary Baldwin, Joan Kenyon, Carol Nelson — Absent Loyal Spectators Chccrleoders in Action Upper Picture — North South View Lower Picture East West View GRADUATION DAY is a memorable blending of the past with the present. But most important of all, on this day, is the bright promise of a future that is yet to be won. The big adventure is just beginning. The opportunity to light up the world is now yours. On this day of days, as you stand before family and friends, you are wrapped in the warmth of pleasant memories that will live with you forevermore. You are wearing a discernible look of achieve- ment. The pride of accomplishment is your own personal badge. And rightly so, for graduation is a monument among the milestones that will mark your journey through life. At this very moment you are looking at a long procession of days and nights that, seemingly, stretch out endlessly before you. They represent the raw material with which you will be working the rest of your life . . . but it is important that you do not spend too much time in the reviewing stand, watching the years pass swiftly by. March with the passing parade. Keep in step with the times, and prepare yourself at all times to take the lead whenever the opportunity arises. Within the next few months, perhaps in a matter of weeks, you will begin to face some of the major decisions that have a dominant influence on everyone’s role in life. Further education? Marriage? Choice of job opportunity and the community in which you will make your home? These are some of the major decisions which will have an important bearing on the future happiness and well-being of your- self and your family-to-be. It is well to plan wisely and proceed cautiously. Graduation day — at the very beginning of the “big adventure”, so to speak — is an especially opportune time to survey your future. This does not mean that you should merely look ahead, however, for the term “survey” has a much broader connotation. Thus, you should take a comprehensive view of the overall direction in which you are now headed. Carefully analyze all of the possibilities, and begin at once to shape your plans accordingly. Now is the time, because — to a surprisingly large degree — each individual is the architect of his own destiny. Scintilla Division Sidney, New York 50 Ted Brining Agency .
