Jobs For Arizona Graduates F.B.L.A. is a group of students who are interested in the field of business. To join F.B.L.A., a student must have taken or be taking a business class. Gi .te...,, Dag I I Jobs for Arizona Graduates is designed to provide high school seniors with pre-employability skills that the transition from high school to work will be easier. Once the employability skills are developed the students graduate, the job specialist works closely with the students to place them in full-time, level positions in the world of work. For nine months following graduation, the job specialist works with employee igraduatel and the employers to ensure a positive work experience. C.O.E. is a class for seniors. Eligibility depends on grades, credits, and attendance that a stu- dent has shown from the ninth to the eleventh grades. Students in C.O.E. get to work in an office while receiving a salary and credit toward their high school graduation. This year, C.O.E. sold helium filled balloons during Homecoming week. Forty student artists then worked through the summer on more than 200 works of ceramic sculpture and paintings reminicent of Picasso's own work. The students installed the exhibition themselves in the junior Gallery, on the lower level of the Phoenix Art Museum during the week of September 7th, Visitors tothe exhibition experienced a working studio filled with the tools, materials and finished artworks of a 20th century artist. f . He skipped the ninth and twelfth grades and entered Morehouse University at the age of fifteen. Dr. King graduated with honors from Morehouse at the age of nineteen. He received a Ph D in theology from Boston University Dr. King was largely responsible for political and social changes that took place in the '50's and '60's. He used peaceful methods such as boycotts, sit ins, and marches to protest Jim Crow Laws. Jim Crow Laws made non whites second class citizens. The effects of Jim Crovs Laws were: segregated busses, the denial of nonwhites the right to attend certain schools, movies, rent certain hotels or to swim in public pools. Dr. King made it his personal responsibility to appeal to our country's conscience. He seemed to know that people would seek tc change racist laws when they became aware of them. Dr. King's efforts intergrated the city of Birmingham's busses and started the Civi Rights Movement Councilman Goode, Dr. Pete, Ms. Cloud, 8a Rev. Stewart. Ms. Holloway: The warm and friendly atmosphere and the effective communication with the students that I teach. Mr. Hurtado: The 1986-87 Basketball State Championship. Ms. Law: Students at South are more accepting of those who are different than most teenagers. This non-critical attitude toward so- meone who does not talk, act or dress as they do, shows great maturity on the part of our students at South. So this must be stressed at school, Mr. Shegog: lt's important because in a few years students will leave high school and must deal with sexual relationships on an adult level. lf the learning is not provided in the home en- vironment, it is imperative that we provide sexual education at school, TT EV? This is due to our new part- nership program with the IBM Capital Marketing Branch located in Phoenix. Over 50 IBM employees ljob occupations ranging from engineers to representativesl have volunteered their services to tutor students in math and business classes. The adoption also includes tours of IBM facilities, assistance in career days and shadowing for South students. The involvement of IBM in the support of the educational, cultural and social development of our school came about after the joint efforts of our Principal, Dr. Josephine l'I. Pete and lBM's representative, Hazel D. Pope. The partnership began on November 18, 1987 and at the present time is an on going arrangement. E'llTl and RECEIVING PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT. Stephanie Vasquez, a junior, In her first year on varsity, played with junior Shawna Walker. They had a terrific year as doubles specialists and they took fourth in divisionals. For the second year in a row, the team has gone to state. The South runners are building a new name in cross-country. The team opened the season slow, then gradually built momentum. They ended the season with a 10-7 record, 5th in divisionals, and 20th in state. The team will have their top four runners back next year because there are on- ly three graduating seniors. The team is looking for new talent from the JV next year. The team dominated rivals like Maryvale, Chaparral, and Alhambra. South blazed new trails in the spirit of excellence. Coached by John Ortiz and his strict discipline of running, the team well exceeded the 700- mile mark for the season. Many of the practices originated from the base of South Mountain, and continued to Ahwatukee, Guadalupe, Kiwanis Park, and SMCC. They are the runnin' WANGS! This year's football team was once again a dominate force on the ground. lt's offense was centered around lvan Worle and Devon Robinson. They both gained over a thousand yards rushing this season. South overcame many problems to clinc another .winning season. Some injuries, the no pass I no play rule, and a much needed field goal kicker didn't prevent Soul from crushing opponents like Yuma and Alhambra. The defense held it's ground behind the leadership of Seyon Albert ar Marcus Glover. Hopes are high for a possible playoff berth next year. Under the dedicated leadership of Coach Charles, South Blasted its main rival, Carl Hayden. This hard-fought victory proved costly when defensive back Lars Jacoby suffered a shattered ankle, then Mike Bing was knocked unconcious in a devastating collision with. an opponent. South continued its strive for perfection when the offense became quick and concise. With stronger offensive play, the previously strained defense became virtually im- penetrable. The team won the competitive consolation bracket in the Skyline Invita- tional Tournment with a 3-2 win over St Marys. They sent South Mountain further in soccer than its ever went before with 8 wins. They had a five game winning streak in mid- season. Individuals played with intense con- centrationin singles and teamwork proved to be the significant feature in doubles play. The team as a whole was a force to be reckoned with. Various individual characteristics made the standings competitive as players challenged each other in practice. First-seated Dean Rohwer set the courts ablaze with his fiery serves. Second-seated Renato Lara and Third- seated Lars Jacoby defeated opponents with pin-point accuracy. Teammates Mike Bing, Craig McConnell, Fred Medina, and Mike Flores gave exhausting efforts that stunned op- ponents. Coach Brunkala led the team with a ruthless desire to win. asf 5 S Q .. .5 ...Q v g Dean hits a spinning lob E ilfffffifffl 1 K' i W ,..,,.. rt, I 2 A Lars was rockin' against North. 1 N IIIIIIIIH ...nInHlU1luu WANG 1 4 s, a 2 L1 AA'-bV-AA1 2 W :S H WM.
