This year Masque and Gavel presented the play, 'David and Lisa', dealing with the problems of two emotionally dis- turbed adolescents. ln the play David, portrayed by Eu- gene Bullock, was a youth with superior intellect and faced emotional problems concerning this. Lisa, played by Janet Colbert and Sue Leuser, was a child with schizo- phrenic tendencies. The basic idea dealt with in the play was that of people helping one another. No better theme could have been used, for David and Lisa faced their problems and eventually found a solu- tion. asque an 'Davi David tries to get to the root of Lisa's problems, but only makes things worse. Among those was the annual homecoming assembly. Part of the growth pattern for every human being is the activities in which he participates. There were many during the year at South. From Homecoming to sack races and from chess matches to football games students found their own interests met by a vital and active program . . . one that provided experiences to broaden the individual. Barton Warren led South to many victories Coach Wales was presented an award by the iunior varsity Activities at South Help Promote Spirit cheerlead ng squad for an undefeated season. The theme of this year's formal, 'Chanson de Noel', meaning 'A Song of Christmas' was appropriately chosen, for the atmosphere and festive mood displayed at the dance was greater than in past years. Even though there were no Silver Bells, the dance was a true success. e Noel' f Formal a bug success Junior Mike Packer obviously isn'f intent on his dancing Band director Jan Haynes and his wife attended the formal Another one of the many activities, this year, was the three-legged sack race. This was a new and different event, and it was regarded with a great amount of enthus- iasm by the students as well as the faculty and administration. It Was in the Ba Pourquoi Theme of Dance One of the many dances performed at the modern dance festival was 'Twilight of the Goddessl This dance truly displays free souls as it was so called. Besides the regular dances held after the foot- ball games this year South sponsored a different type of dance which the whole student body could not participate in. Miss Teddy Barner's modern dance class gave a performance concerning the different tech- niques and movements involved in a modern dance. Approximately twenty-five girls partici- pated in the performance. -.Sr rig 5 A demonstration on the atomic structure is given by the YES guest speaker. South High was honored this year by host- ing a number of varied and interesting visitors. .Among them were, a teacher from Osaka, Japan who visited South and several other schools in order to study American teaching methods, a Black Muslim talking on his religion and some of its more important facetsg an elec- tronics expert who presented a demonstration talk on the techniques ot electronicsg and, of course, there was Sing Out South Mountain. ,Y 'g E 2 . 1, Sing Out South Mountain is iust one of the many divisions of the original Up With People group. Other activities included a poem re- cital by Wade Marshall, a spanish dance by Marcus Medina and a song by Christy Moore and Wade Marshall. The 'Bad Guysi visited the local saloon. an ade... Last Play of School Year I Man Made, written by Mrs. Joy Harvey, a local authoress, was the spring play production for Masque and Gavel this year. The play dealt with robotry and con- tained many amusing scenes and situ- ations as well as serious ones. This play was quite different from those that Masque and Gavel have pre- sented in recent years, but it was a success, none the less. The breakfast program was designed to feed those students who may not have had time to eat before school. P+ J, Senior Wade Marshall congratulates himself on a iob well done. Speech Squad This year attended seven Tournaments, one of these contained stu- dents from four states including Nevada, California, and Texas. At This one South was Third highest scorer from The state of Arizona. Winners were: Mary Mays, first in iun- ior persuasive and a semitinalist in iunior extemporaneous speaking, Eric Goode, first in senior oral interpretation of liter- ature, and Wade Marshall, second in senior oral interpreTaTion. South Phoenix held their annual festi- val of arts up in the ramadas at South Mountain Park this year. Anyone south of the Salt River, west of Guadalupe, and east of Laveen could participate in the events. Individual stu- dents either entered their work through the school or on their own. Some of the students who entered various categories were: Mike Marsh, Joyce Evans, Debbie Normile, Danny Thompson, Pam Vesco, and a number of other students. A lot of time and effort went into the preparation for the festival Three years a member of the South- winds staff, graduating in mid-term, playing soccer, and running cross country were all a part of a staff favorite, Luis Hidalgo. Luis maintained a high grade average in addition to his extra-curricular activities. Members of both student publications treated Luis to a dinner at El Maya upon his ending his career at South. It was their way of saying goodbye to El Jefef' Three Years a Staffer, Luis Hidalgo Graduates Early in the first semester the School Board passed a new dress code for the schools in the Phoenix Union District. This new relaxed dress code allowed boys To wear their hair long and sport a beard as long as they were kept neat and clean. The girls may now wear ber- muda shorts and slacks everyday instead of only on the frequent Levi Sweat Shirt Days. Dress Code odified y School Board Many girls this year wore pants often if not every day to school. Another of the various activities started at South this year were the noon clay activities. To get this program off to a good start many of the students as well. as the faculty donated their free time. Some of the different games offered were chess, checkers, scribbage, parchesi, and various other time consuming events. A future plan, for South will be a music hour. Chess was of very popular game among the students. tudents Enjo 0011 Activities fs s P1 9. it SMN E51' I ,.,r ii -'-N. Us V 'i'2 i Some of the students preferfed cards to the other games offered. Showing good sportsmanship, varsity foot- ball finished with only 2 losses, while J.V. went all the way. Baseball gave another year of tough com- petition. Wrestling and track attracted a lot of at- tention in their trials. Basketball showed some possibilities for next year's varsity. Many people have in the past de- scribed or talked about basketball in these terms. Many of those people have left something out: South High's Spirit. On any playing field South has been a hard team to beat. Basketball is no exception. The shaping of a player's character is taking place during the game itself. The personalities of players makes for the amount of spirit. The amount of spirit makes for a better team effort. The better the team effort, the harder South is to beat.
