For Best Season ,W South Mountain was blessed with a winning varsity football team which at press time were 6-O lwon-lost recordl and were rated among the top ten schools in Arizona. This year the Rebel offense was at its best with veteran quarterbacks Mike Chitwood and Don Hurst leading the way. The backfield was the speediest South Mountain has had in a long while. Backs Troy Jordon, Robert Johnson, Herbert Jones, Larry Han- kins, and Barton Warren were the big guns for South. End James Reed was a big factor in South's success as he caught many aerials from Hurst and alternating quarterback Mike Chitwood. However, the offense could not have been of any value if the Rebs hadn't had the consistent defense that was displayed throughout the season. Pat Phillips, Pat Hurley, Bob Millan, Tim Kelson, Eddie sz, Garcia, and Tom Friddle smothered many an oppos- 'li ing team's rushing game. lt is hard to say enough about the coaching staff. Head coach Earl Clupper's constant determination proved to be a great inspira- tion to the players. Defensive coach Dick McKivergan did a fantastic iob with the defense as the Rebels won-lost record speaks for itself. 7 Larry Hankins sits atop a dazzled defender, while Robert Johnson carries for a substantial gain and another Rebel victory.
