In the realm of mathematics are elusive numbers, intricate geometric figures, and plain old miscalculations. At least one unit of mathematics is required for grad- uation. For the 2-l-2:5 people, there is a course in general math. For the more daring, algebra, geometry, and trigo- nometry may be studied. For the truly mathematical-minded, advanced courses in algebra and geometry are available. Well aware ofthe trouble many students have with math, a math help room is al- ways open with at least one teacher ready to help. Students may also come after school for help. To become the responsible citizens of tomorrow, we must know and understand our past and, the systems we operate under now. Qualified teachers are the rule. ln order to cope with world problems and atti- tudes, an extensive program in social studies is presented to all South Moun- tain students. All iuniors must take a year ot American history and all seniors must take a semester each of economics and American government. The social studies department head is Mr. Shepard.

M.A., A.S.U. Colleges require at least two years of a foreign language. International policies and events demand attention, as do their people and languages. Travel abroad means another language if you are to be understood. French, Latin, and Spanish are the foreign languages offered at -South Mountain. Mrs. Gilbert teaches French, Mrs. Rasbury teaches Latin, and Mrs. Johanson teaches Spanish. At least two years are offered in each of these languages. A third year Spanish class was offered this year and was taught by the head of the department, Mr. Palmer. Third year Spanish classes have been offered off and on, depending on the demand.
