IBASKETBALL Again as last year the South Milwaukee Rocket basketball team was top gun in the suburban con- ference and for a while top gun in the state. Mr. .iansky did another fine job of running the team as the very good 18-2 record shows. With one of the finest pair of six footers in the conference the team rolled up good and exciting games. On November 16, 1956 the team officially started their play as they traveled to Sheboygan North for a non-conference opener. The team of Jerry Crochowski. John Milhalko, Dave Bauhs, John Baranek, and Gary Kraczkowski took the floor and took a quick lead and then drifted to a T3-66 first game win. Two more non-conference foes were to meet defeat against the Rockets before the conference opener against Waukesha. Racine Park fell in a close T9 - 76 game. and West Bend was defeated by the Rockets in a T6 -63 game. Waukesha was rated to be the top team along with the Rockets. This they showed when they dumped the 70 point average Rocket team with a 69-58 loss. The Rockets got back on their feet the next week to beat Cudahy in a 77 - 54 score. The Rockets then added victories over West Milwaukee, West Allis Central. Shorewood. Wauwatosa. White- fish Bay, West Alllis Hale. and non-conference wins over Beloit, Nicholet, and Pulaski. All these games put the Rockets in a tight race for the crown with Yvaukesha as Bay tipped the leaders to put them back with the Rockets. The Redmen then jumped into top rating in VVIAA Big Sixteen poll. With this top class rating. the team entered one of the most important games of the year as Waukesha invaded the Rocket court. After a point for point match throughout the game the teams en- tered the last minute with almost a deadlock. then the Redmen exploded to an eight point lead and a 68 - 60 win. Cildahy didnft put up much opposition as the Rockets lengthened their winning streak to 13. And an unlucky 13 it was as second place West Milwau- kee came to S-M- and buried the Redmen in a 58- 52 game to tie for the championship. West Allis Cen- tral and Shorewood were topped by Mr. Janskyis crew to finish with a conference record of 12 - 2. Heading the Rocket team was Grochowski. as he took a herth on the Sentinel and Journal all-sub- urban team. He jammed in 262 points during conference play for the third spot in the standing. Big john Milhalko took the fifth spot with his good count of 235 markers. John made the second team of the Sentinel and journal. Other scoring king-pins were Cary Kraczkowski. second team on the Sen- tinel squad. llave Bauhs. and Junior guard Ron Krolski. john Baranek. and Don Karnowski also accounted for many Rocket points. .Sponsored hy LINE. Four of Walter's first team of six were re- turning lettermen. Vern Olsen led the spiking and was followed by the letter-winning play of Phil Mork, Jerry Knops. and Phil Schubeck. Along with other strong seniors the team was a skillful unit. BASEBALL The sport of baseball made its entrance as a school sport this year and Mr. Rennicke took over the coaching duties. The team played a few subur- ban teams and many out-of-town squads and did well as to the good team power. Most of the team leaders were members of last year's summer high- school team in which the Rockets took one of the top spots in the summer in the regular conference schedule- Jerry Grochowski. Bob Mahlandt, Gary Kraczlcowski. Ron Krolski. Chuck Yurkus. and pitchers John Mihallxo and Rich Shrubiszewski. were the main springs in the Rocket team.
