ASX 6 With five boys to occupy his time, Mr. Bauhs, our high school principal, doesn't need any hobbies or sports to keep him busy. How- ever, when those leisure minutes come, he heads for a golf course. Not many people are aware that at one time Mr. Bauhs was a star athlete. Did you know, for examf ple, that formerly he was a state tennis champion? Our superintendent of schools is a sportsman. When the deer hunting season comes each fall, he enjoys a few days of hunting at his cabin in northern Wisconsin. He also does some trout fishing in the Pople River, not far from his cabin. Here, in South Milwaukee, a pleasant summer day may find him scoring in the low 70's on the Grant Park golf course. Left In Right: Marcy Hadjenian, Kathleen Calder, Delores Olsen, Irene Rivers. Secretaries Marcella Hndjiniun, one of the girls in Mr. Bauhs' office, is ready to help you, but she does give those detentions. Kathleen Calder, who became a Mrs. last September, is secretary to Mr. Bauhs and keeps everything running smoothly. Delores Olson works in Miss Smiths office but you can also see her popping in and out of the other offices. Irene Rivers, another new Mrs., is the girl behind the window, selling everything from pencils to con- struction paper. C th Orchestra The lovely music wafting out of the barracks every fourth hour is the orchestra. Under the con- ducting of Mr. Hagen the orchestra has had a very successful year. They gave us some fine assemblies and the combined Christmas program was enjoyed by all. The highlight of year was the orchestra concert in April. They played some melodies which will long remain in our memories. String Ensemble If there is nothing more enjoyable than play- ing an instrument it is playing with more in a string ensemble. This year the ensemble put in long hours of rehearsal for the pieces they played at the contest. They were so well liked that they were asked to play at many local organizations. I know these musicians will long remember the work and fun they have had this past year. Pep Band This group, composed of the strongest players of each section in the band, has worked hard and enthusiastically with the cheerleaders at basketball games and pep assemblies. The lively marches and active majorettes do much to raise the spirit in sport activities. Dance Band An after-the-game dance is always well-attended when the dance band is playing. Together with Mr. Drews, the adviser, the members of this group have worked on a concentrated number of standard popular tunes every Wecltiestlnxy. Top Ruin' R, Dretzka, M. Glaske, R. Kraning, D. Football As usual in the beginning of the season, expectations ran higher than fact and we got off to a bad start with a 20-0 loss at the hands of Shorew0od's fast gridders. Trying hard at the next chance a large crowd at Tosa watched the Rockets lose a heartbreaker, 18-14. All statistics were ours except the score. Our first win was against nonconference Messmer and after that we rolled along in the win column. First we defeated West Milwaukee 13-0 in the most exciting home- coming game in years. Then came West Allis Central, which was hardly functioning as we pushed them backwards over the line six times. The next win was 7-0 over a power- ful Whitefish Bay squad. Everyone will still remember jerry Tuska's 73-yard off-tackle run in that one. Our last loss, an overwhelming one, was delivered by Cudahy in front of a record crowd. After that setback we stormed back against Hale 20-13 and in our final game beat Waukesha 6-0 in a blinding snowstorm with about 2 inches of snow on the ground. Ron Ragan was elected captain for the year. 54 1 B ' ' Team Top Roux' D. johnson, R. Thomas, S. Holguin, D. Lackowski, W. Tucker, D. Lemcke, J. Schauer, L. O'Leary, R Litke, J. Ratajczyk, K. South. Cross Country This year our Cross Country team, piloted by Coach Brown, put up a superb record and thoroughly retained the honor it gained last year. Out of ten meets our runners brought home nine firsts and one second. We won the Lakeshore Invitational, the Suburban Championship, the State, Class B, Championship, and placed second in the Midwest Invitational. Two of the highlights of the season were the upsetting of Wauwatcmsa Qtheir first suburban defeat in three yearsb, and winning the Suburban Conference meet at Writi- kesha. Sophomore Dave Harris was the leading runner this year. Captain was Chuck Roberts. Letter winners were Chuck Roberts, Dave Harris, Bob Mildebrandt, Charlie Davitz, Ronnie Weinstock, Toushy Olbrantz, joe Stearns, and jim Behr. Rh I 57 Basketball The Rocket cagers this year ended their season with an excellent record and qualified in every way for more than the second place they got in the Suburban League. The team started slowly at the beginning of the year but hit their stride as the season developed. Out of twelve starts the only two defeats this year were Wllitehsh Bay by one point, and first place Wlest Mil- waukee by three points. Both games were in the beginning of the season. In post season play we whipped West Milwaukee and went all through the Subregionals with a per- fect record until we met Kenosha at Racine. They defeated us by nine points, Freshman center, Jay Schauer, had the most remarkable record established by anyone for a long time. He had the most quarters 1865, the most baskets 1955, best shooting average 14085, most free throws 1735, most fouls 1625, most rebounds 12825, and the most points 12635. ,lack Vahradian attempted the most shots 12515. Volleyball As usual, Coach Walter's volleyball squad ended the season among the top three teams in the conference. They kept up the good standing enjoyed in the volleyball world since Mr. Walters started coaching. To start the season the first and second stringers racked up a total of I5 straight wins. Tosa and Watlkeslia, our two toughest opponents came next and proved to be our downfall. We managed only to squeeze one win out of Tosa, and lost all three games with Vlaukesha. With only last-place Cudahy left the season was considered unoflicially over. How- ever, too much overconfidence brought Cudahy one of their first wins and us, our sixth loss in 24 starts to end the season in third place. Ray johnson was elected captain for the season. 61 Q 'fw. 1' Golf Last years golf team, which placed 2nd in the Suburban, seventh in the State, and tied for second in the Hartford Invitational, has left six lettermen for the 1951 squad. They are Ed Bullard, Archie Dadian, Dick Hughes, Rollie Blanchett, Don Luedtke, and Bob Kaczanowski. Mr. Whitenack expects a good showing from the 17 boys on his team. Thus far they have shown much promise by winning four out of five marches. Top Row: J. Bayer, D. Luedtke, D. Charlston, K. Western, F. Haldemann, W. O'Leary, J. Hughes, V. Kelvin, J Roberts, R. Last year we tied for 4th place in the Suburban tournament, and took ninth in the State matches at Neenah. The State meet this year will be held at Manitowoc. This years team, of 12, with the exception of one senior and one junior, is composed entirely of sophomores. The team is quite green and out of ten scheduled matches, has lost four out of five. It is improving and promises to become quite a threat next year. Top Roux' A. Kuppert, I. Smith, H. Keeler, J. Radomski. Middle Roux' B. Leahy, R. Nirschl H. Swanson. Bottom Roux' B. MacAteer, F. Charles Roberts, Connie Thill, Bob Mildebrandt, and Gene Chybowski set a new low hurdles record in that meet. So far this year the team, which has improved immensely, has already copped first place in the Little Suburban and is looking forward to at least third place in the Suburban league. The returning lettermen are Pete Cieczka, Bill Fehler, Tim Flaherty, Melvin Fouts, Dave Harris, Don Luedtke, Bob Mildebrandt, Ronnie Ragan, Charles Roberts, -lack Vahradian.
