We met for assemblies . . . . . . South’s good citizen . . . . . . The happiest girl at South . . . Tho- summer turns X , M 4 to- 1 ' vinter Und the present disappears. . . . . . The Team is getting ready . . . We (aid hose these . . . They gave us spirit . . . . . . Student Council Campaigns . . . . . . To us they are the very best . . . . . . Our first annual . . . Forward As this year draws to a close, we each have many moments to remem- er, each dearer than the one before. What are some of the special mo- ments you remember? The Catalina sockhop? The last football game? The Homecoming Dance? Or perhaps the Prom. For some, these moments held the promise of “next year” — Another great year at South. For some, they were the fulfillment of all the previous school years, the Senior ring, senior privileges, the anticipation of a new beginning. . . . Our Senior Rings Whatever your special moments were, we hope that you will find them somewhere in this book, and looking- back years later, hold them even more precious with the time that has pass- ed. . . . Looking Back . . . Dedication In our Moments to Remember, one person stands out very clearly. She has guided us and taught us, helping us through our most difficult school year. It is appropriate that we, the Senior Class of 1961, dedicate with love and respect the 1961 Somecka to Mrs. Virginia Moore Neely. 8 Contents DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES ADVERTISEMENTS THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE HELPED US THROUGH rm ADMINISTRATION 1 1 E. H. EDMISTEN We, the student body, deeply appreciate his endless concern for and dedication to the welfare of both the student body and the faculty. We shall always strive to reach the high goals that he has put before us. 12 b — ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL D. W. BAUCOM For the many hours he spends in organizing the perhaps unnoticed but important tasks vital to the school curriculum, we express our gratitude to Mr. Baucom. SECRETARIES Mrs. Doris Cunningham and Mrs. Anna Seay are our two hard-working secretaries. For all their industriousness, they still manage to have time to be interested in and helpful to any student. 13 Ann Sherer Baker Winthrop College, A.B.; English I II; Dramatics Club. Marjorie B. THE DAY WE TORE THE GOALPOSTS DOWN . — SPORTS 93 L. to R . — Ginny Thompson, Candy Kimball, Gwen Padgett, Colleen Mickelson, Susie Brauch, head cheerleader Sandra Moore, Mary Jane Lambeth, Donna Van Pelt. Absent, Charlotte Brower. CHEERLEADERS The 1960-1 961 cheerleaders deserve a pat on the back for their fine work this year. They pro- moted school spirit, by leading cheers at the games, held pep rallies, publicized the games, and encouraged good sportsmanship among the stu- dents. They were amply lead and achieved their purpose by their advisor, Miss Pugh, and head cheerleader, Susie Brauch. Advisor, Miss Pugh What’s Charlotte Brower Donna Van Pelt Gwen Padgett Robert Patten; Varsity Football, Wrestling John Needyj Cross Country, Varsity Basketball, Track COACHING STAFF South’s coaching staff put forth an excellent showing in our first year in the 4-A conference. Our teams compiled one of the best seasons for a school in it’s second year of athletics, as they David Price; J. V. Football, J. V. Basketball showed we could compete in stiff competition. The school should feel proud of these men and back them all the way. VARSITY FOOTBALL South’s football team won in streaks this year. It won it’s first two games and the next to the last game. The Sabres’ first year in the conference proved to be tough for South faced the best in the state. The Sabres’ fine running game, which lit- erally ran through most opponents, was led by Wes Homolik, Hyman Harris, and David Grier. Our line, which did an outstanding job in opening holes for the backs, was anchored by Don Hamil- ton and Mike Goins. Coach Patten’s first year as head football coach turned out to be a good one and despite the loss of over 25 Seniors, he should have a fine team next year. Homolik scores for South Harris sweeps the end SOUTH 19 WADESBORO 7 South’s first game of the season gave the Sabres its first win over highly rated and heavily favored Wades- boro. South revealed its fine running game gaining 347. yards on the ground, and showing a stable defense. Wes Homolik scored twice and Dickie Harvel once in the South’s route. SOUTH 13 WEST 7 South’s second win of the season came at hands of a country foe, West. This wild game was settled by a forty yard sprint by Wes Homolik while David Grier had put the Sabres in front earlier by an eleven-yard run. This was an all round team effort as the defense stopped many West penetrations. SOUTH 0 GARINGER 19 The Sabres’ first loss of the season was to last year’s state champ, the Garinger Wildcats. South played an outstanding game with most of the statistics even ex- cept the scoring. Garinger’s win was no push over and was a lot closer than the score as Hyman Harris bash- ed the “cats” line for big gains. This loss hurt the Sabres in the coming games because it was a let down to us after such a hard try. SOUTH 0 MYERS PARK 20 South’s second loss of the season was another heart breaker. Harris and Homolik together gained over 150 yards on the ground which was more than 30 yards better than M. P. total yardage on the ground and in the air. The first half was played on M. P. portion of the field but the sabres just couldn’t cash in. M. P. scored on a short gain after recovering fumbles and intercepting a couple of passes. SOUTH 0 HARDING 19 Harding handed South its third loss and third straight shut out by the “City’s Big Three.” South, crippled from the loss of Harris by the result of an injury, was lead by Homolik and Grier. The falling Sabres again were beaten on mis-cues and could never make them up. 98 SOUTH 7 ASHEVILLE 33 The burly Maroons of Asheville buried South for the fourth time under an avalanche of touchdowns. Every mistake by the Sabres was turned into a touch- down for the Maroons. South, still riddled by injuries to its starting backs never could overcome the Western 4-A leaders. Grier pierced the line for the only score which was set up by the injured Homolik. SOUTH 6 GASTONIA 47 The Sabres which traveled to Gastonia to play the champs of the Western 4-A conference were crushed by the Green Wave in South’s worst defeat. Gastonia could do nothing wrong and swept the Sabres from the field. The lone touchdown was set up by a 70 yard scamper on the opening kick off by Bryant Lane. Rick Toburen, who was converted from fullback, scored on the fourth down. The starting backfield except for Dickie Harvel, the quarterback, did not see any action. SOUTH 34 NORTH 12 South’s long dry spell was broken with a convincing homecoming victory over the Rebels of North. South, playing at full strength, scored in every period with brilliant playing of the team. Homolik scored twice, Harris once, Grier once, and Steve Norton, playing for the injured Harvel, once as the Sabres ran through, over, and around the Rebels. The Sabres closed out the scoring with their first safety of the season in the final period. SOUTH 6 EAST 6 The South Sabres and East Eagles playing for the mythical county championship, ended the year in a stalemate with the score 6 to 6 and total yardage gain- ed 170 yards apiece. The bitter rivals after South’s last year’s upset played forty-eight minutes of head- knocker football with South scoring first and domina- ting the first half. South’s David Grier jaunted 40 yards for the score while Homolik and Harris again tore holes in the East’s line. South’s last game was one of its finest and as the horn sounded to end the game and season the Sabres were still fighting for a victory. 99 SENIOR STARS First Row, L. to R . — Mike Green, Mike Goins, Frank Smith, Ralph Doster, Dickie Jones, Don Hamilton, Fred Abernathy, Jack Hardy, John Landis.
