J unior-Senior. We remember choosing the symbols which will always be a part of South: our school colors, scarlet red and White . . . the teams, nickname, the Sabres . . . the name of the newspaper, The Soutlzferrn Accent . . the name of our annual, SOMECKA. May this, your first volume of the SOMECKA, ever remind you of these events and the other acti- vities of South's first year. And may the spontane- ous spirit, which has made South so outstanding in its first year, continue far into the future. 47' Y., ,QM 'H 'f -2 tfiffz? ,f A - N L I 1 , -, I' fs W 5 M , - .Q 7 V . 'T . Due to a lack of funds, South's opening year found the first volume of the Accent being mim- eographed, a very painstaking process. Our newspaper staff has supplied the local newspapers with student writers and information which has kept South in the news. This coverage includes weekly columns, Sunday features, sports coverage, student spotlights and top teens, and special news items. The objective of the journalism class is to plant the seed of creative thinking and writing in the minds of its members. E, Of course what we have a right to expect from the Ameri- can boy is that he shall turn out to be a good American man. Now, the chances are strong that he won't be much of a man un- less he is a good deal of a boy. He must not be a coward or a weakling, a bully, a shirk, or a prig. He must work hard and play hard. He must be clean-minded and clean-lived, and able to hold his own und-er all circumstances and against all comers. It is only on these conditions that he will grow into the kind of man of whom American can really be proud . . . In short, in life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: Hit the line hard, don't foul and don't shirk, but hit the line hard.
