During your high school years, extracurricular activities have a large part in the formation of your personality, your likes and dislikes, and the type of person you will become. In our school we are fortunate to have activities that will appeal to all types of people. For the artis- tic there is an art club, for the homemakers-to-be there is FHA, for the honor student there is the National Honor Society. The list is seemingly end- less . No matter what your interest is, there is bound to be a club or activity suited to you. Although these extracurricular activities are some- times overlooked, they are major things which shape our lives for the future and should be entered onto with just as much energy and Work as we devote for should devotej to our homework. 46 MUSIC BRASS ENSEMBLE FRONT ROW: S. To become a Falconette is not an easy task, for each prospective member must pass a private audition, then demonstrate how well she can fit in with the rest of the Falconettes . 1 These talented girls not only sing, but have regular routines and choreogra- phy for many of their numbers . The director of the Falconettes is Mr. Murdock, who also organized the group. Since their beginning only one year ago, they have performed for several organizations around Lewis county, and in concerts here at the Junior-Senior High School. In August of 1964, the Falconettes were honored by being chosen to help represent Lewis County on Lewis County Day at the New York State Pavilion of the World's Fair. FRONT ROW: L. Weiman G. Coach Phelps 'Captain Stan Plato Coach Bligh 55 HE Football Falcons opened their season at General Brown on a warm September Saturday. Knowing they were facing one of the league's top clubs the locals were determined to improve on the previous season's record despite many new men at key positions. Spotting their opponents a 13 point lead the South Lewis Club finally began to play up to their capabilities and move the ball. Dave Reed capped a 60 yard march plunging over from the two and the score read 13-6 at halftime. General Brown rammed in a quick score to open the second half and the two clubs battled evenly the rest of the way with the final score showing the homesters out in front by a 20-6 margin. NOWING they were a better team than they showed the previous week the Falcons ran a spirited week of practice sessions in preparation for their first home game. Alexandria Bay, a traditional league powerhouse, was the opponent as the South Lewis boys inaugarated the new gridiron at Turin. Determined to baptize the field in proper style the home team was a different ball club, blocking and tackling crisply. Early in the game Dave Reed turned the corner and raced 50 yards to paydirt. Jim Allen added the extra point. ln the sec- ond period Stan Plato capped a long march with a sneak which left the score 13-O at halftime. Plato again scored on a similar move in the third period making it 19-0. Later in the same period with fourth down on the Bay 25, Dave Reed hit Sam Carrera for the final Falcon tally. The South Lewis defense was superb until the final play of the game when the visitors hit on a desperation pass making the final score 25-7 for S. L. I-IE locals traveled to Beaver River where the underrated Beavers and a crew of flag-happy officials combined with Falcon errors to make a close game of what appeared to be a runaway on paper. With B. R. leading 6-O Dennis Crofoot broke over tackle, got a block, shook off uvo mcklers and scampered 40 yards to the end zone to even the score. Later, Dave Reed cut back on a scissors play, the blocking was perfect and he went 22 yards to put the Falcons in front. Jim Allen ran for the extra point. In the second half Dave Reed again tallied and as the S. L. club moved goalward again the game appeared in the bag. A big SO yard run with an interception put the Beavers back in the ball game and not until Charlie Burdick sped 60 yards in the waning minutes was the game sewed up. The final read South Lewis 25 -- Beaver River 12. The win proved expensive as starting tackle Matt Wojnowski was injured and shelved for the remainder of the season. I-E. Sandy Creek game was played in a snowstorm and was one that the Falcons would just as soon forget. The Red and White moved the ball pretty well but were plagued by interceptions and defensive lapses. South Lewis was on the short end of a 31-13 score and the only plus feature was the emergence of Lou Karnath at end. The slender transfer caught one long bomb from Plato for a -TD and the same two combined for several more completions one of which set up the second touchdown. Plato sneaked the ball in and added the extra point. I-IE following Saturday the Falcons played some of their finest football in the first half and led a heavily favored Indian River club 14-7 at halftime. Buckley and Karnath scored the TDs and Jim Allen split the uprights on both conversions. The heat and a determined I, R. team wore the locals down in the second half and we were turned back by a 20-14 margin. I-IE South Lewis team then took on a tough Carthage J, V. UD team and the Falcon defense was as tough as the offense was inept. The failure to take advantage of the breaks resulted in a O-0 tie. GAIN failing to capitalize on the breaks the Falcons bowed to an underdog ACAC eleven by a 13-6 score. Stan Plato tallied' the only 6 pointer for the homesters in the team's poorest effort of the year. HF. season's final encounter was with league champion Clayton and die South Lewis club rose to the occasion to throw a scare into the Pirates before bowing 14-O. The Falcons showed an ability to move the ball but had several long drives killed by the clock and fumbles. HE students can be proud of a team whose two winsdo not give accurate testimony to the quality of football played. Never were the Falcons outclassed and they earned the reputation of the hardest hitting team in the league. Lack of experience and of depth hurt the team and hopefully, participation will be even better next year. Surely missed will be the fine end play of Dick Burke, the blocking of john Burdick who was probably the league's best tackle, and jim Allen's offensive speed, defensive savey, plus his golden toe. Ron Mackey's aggessive play at center and Stan Plato's passing, running, kicking, and play-calling. The departure of defensive specialist Ken Ossont completely decimates the key linebacking position and Dave Meyers, and Ron Traxel will also be missed. 56 1. 1 ,C AMA , Y be .5 Nm M K A ww. 34. --'Q A ., ,,.,... 7 ' -Su .. Even though the team failed to win any of its ball games, much experience was gained and the team improved notably as the season progressed. Nearly thirty ninth-grade boys tried out for the te am, many never having had any previous experience. Prospects for 1965 should be brighter with several returning players and a large ttunout expected from next years freshmen. ROW 1: S. Carrera, J. Gaylord. ROW 2: K. Peterson, J. Bush, J. Gorczyca, I. With just a couple of breaks, our record could have been easily reversed making us the top team in the league. The Boys' intramural program consists of badminton, ping -pong, volleyball, and basket- ball. Basketball intramurals are designed to give all boys in school a chance to become more familiar with the game . The intramural games provide opportunities for the boys to use the fundamentals of basketball in a game. There are four teams which compete against each other in two divisions.. The first division con- sists of seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, and the second division of the tenth, eleventh, and twelth grades . Ping -pong singles and badminton singles and doubles are played in a tournament competition. The Girls' intramural program consists of field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and softball. The pro- gram is set up with teams competing against each other in all of the above mentioned games. Each of these fields are designed to give each girl an opportunity to partici- pate in a game in which she is interested. Incorporated with the intramural program the G.A.A. has organized one playday so far t-his year and plans to have another. Participating in our basketball playday were Lowville Academy, Beaver River Central, and Port Leyden Central schools. Another playday in which volleyball and minor sports will be featured is planned. The purpose of the intramural program is to provide all students with the oppor- tunity to take an active part in sports. It helps to promote the development of sports- manship and school spirit together with a sense of fair play. tx BASEBALL With many new prospects lined up and with many of last year's players returning, the coaches feel that this should be a fine season. During the past year at South Lewis, a Boys' Athletic Association was organized for the purpose of en- couraging athletic compeiition, advocating good sportsmanship and strengthening the school spirit toward athletics. In organizing the B. A. A. , the basic format upon which the G. A.A. was formed in 1963-64, was adopted. A Varsity Club was established whereby any student having earned a varsity letter could become a member. Two representatives of the Varsity Club were selected to serve with the officers of both the B. A. A. and G. A. A. of the Athletic Council. The basic ideals of athletic competition, sportsmanship, and spirit, incorporated in the B.A. A. we hope will develop to their fullest capacity at South Lewis as the years go by.
