Under The Big Top Everyone knows what a circus is, you've been going to them for years. But have you ever thought where the circus originated or when the first one came to America? The ancient Romans used the word circus for'the chariot races which were held in a circular court. By 1792 the circus had made its way to America with George Washington being one of the first to see that performance. He, like everyone else, preferred the clowns, jugglers, a military riding act, and the circus music. The biggest circus in the United States today is the Ringling Brothers and the Barnum and Bailey Circus. The Ringlings bought out Barnum and Bailey in l9U6, however, they operated the two shows separately until 1920. The tent in which the big show takes place holds almost l2,UUU people. A big circus may have more than l,2OU people in its company. This is not sur- prising when you remember that they carry their own workmen, cooks, pay- roll clerks, caretakers of animals, and other workers. But now we say, Come onel Come alll And see the gigantic, terrific l949 South Kitsap Circus. Meet Bosco, the barker, and Clancy, the clown. Let them lead you around to see the thoroughfare, the sideshows, to meet the l,3OO people who make up our circus. Go with them through a circus year of work, play, and laughter.
