Its devotion and cooperation have made it the backbone of the school. The past year marked the retirement of Mrs. Amy F. Lyon, Bill Healey, and jim Anderson. Mrs. Lyon, the school nurse since 1934, has been ably replaced by Miss Virginia Woodruff. Len Christian and Kai Sorenson have taken Bill's place in the kitchen, and Harry Hoffman now does jim's baking. Still carrying on are many familiar faces, Miss Bull in the offlce, Martin, Vic, and john on the farm, Tom Boyd on mainten- ance, and Mrs. Martin in the laundry. Mrs. Humphreys joined the staff this year as a secretary. The class of 1954 takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to this staff. MRS. LYON BILL HEALEY JIM ANoERsoN YEARBOOK 1954 MARTIN MRS. THE FOOTBALL SEASON Although South Kent's 1953 football team broke even in six games, we had a successful season. We topped the Gunnery for the first time in five years, 13-7. A pass from Daly to Richmond in the fourth period provided the margin of victory. On the follow- ing series of plays Gunnery drove to our one foot line, but South Kent held on a great goal line stand as the game ended. The season started well. Despite a lack of finesse we overcame Millbrook, 14-0. The following week the team nosed out a good Wooster squad, 7-6, with a touchdown early in the last quartet. Westminster con- tinued its domination over South Kent. A blocked con- version attempt spelled the difference. We lost, 20-19. Next week Salisbury capitalized on a South Kent let- down. Overcoming an eight point half-time deficit, the visitors went on to win, 18-14. Because of a snow- storm the Canterbury game was postponed to the fol- lowing Monday. Striking hard and fast, Canterbury scored nineteen points before the first period ended. Final score: 26-14. Particularly outstanding was the starting line of Dave Pollet, Ricky Lansing, and Bud Daly. Dave Keffer, Sandy Watt, and Barr Clayson formed a strong defense, and Pete Geilich excelled in the cage. This year's first boat was undefeated in dual meets for the second time in three years. It finished third at Quinsigamond, but the next week was able to overtake Pomfret and Choate at the finish to win by half a length. The second boat lost at Quinsigamond by a heart- breaking six inches. Its 2:44 in the Pomfret race was the best time for any boat all year. There was a continual shifting of men in the third boat but nonetheless it lost only one race, to Salisbury. Their win over Pomfret made possible our first clean sweep over that school. Captain Dave Pollet, Sandy Watt, Ricky Lans- ing, Pete Ober, and Tom Posnansky held the first five positions on the squad, respectively. Of these lettermen, only Ober will return next year. Pollet and Watt each compiled records of four wins and three losses, and together formed a powerful doubles team, winning live and losing only one. THE BASEBALL SEASON The baseball team's record of seven wins and four defeats was the best since too long ago to remember, according to Coach Whittemore. More- over, the team ran up a string of five straight victories at the end of the season. Bud Daly, Captain Dick Farr, and Bill Taylor led the squad in hitting, all having averages over 500. Pitcher Daly opened and closed the season with sparkling 1-O shutouts and, in between, he defeated Westminster, 7-0. The backlield was sparked by the hard running of Pete Ober and Dick Puffer, and Rogers Martin's passing. The Taylor twins excelled at the ends, while the line was bolstered by Bob Gibbons, Tom Allan, Bob Lee and john Toye. The high point of the season was a touchdown pass from Martin to Bill Taylor in the last ten seconds of the Millbrook game, which wiped out a 7-6 deficit. Mr. Waller and Mr. Goode led the Kidget squad to a season's record of two wins, two ties, and a single loss. Both ties were, oddly enough, scoreless. The team was greatly hampered by injuries to its key players, Peter Dyke wrenched a knee, Tony Price broke an arm, and others sus- tained minor injuries. Bob Sanford, Gill Peabody, Price and Dyke comprised a speedy backfield, and Bob Hastings led a sturdy defensive line. Pete Tulloch made many sparkling catches at end, particularly in the Berkshire game. The Midgets figured in several free-scoring games that provided many exciting moments for all concerned. Coaches Small and Humphreys vividly recall eighty-pound Johnnie Richards knocking cold an opposing player twice his size. Lenny Gibbons, Archie Frost, Reeve Cantus, Peter Lee, Peter Finch and Forbes Elliott led a team that exhibited great spirit even in the darker moments. 50 - --guy-mtl-af ,-nf 2 vm ,J we l gmmnx, Q v-1 Y? fy .J YEARBOOK 1954 ' HOCKEY Although the land rinks were used more this year than in the previous five, the Leagues were able to complete but one round. This was principally due to a lack of cooperation from the elements, which unmerci- fully donated snow night after night through january. The fast-aging faculty, claiming shortness of breath, introduced a new twist to the Leagues. The four par- ticipating masters, Messrs. Wister, Brown, Dingman, and Waller, placed themselves on one team, captained by Donn Downing. Despite their grey hairs, the Old Men were consistently able to lick the other seven teams until Czar Fox clamped down, allotting them half a point for each goal. This reduced them at sea- son's end to a three-way tie with Gordon Reid's Heeby jeebies and Blake's and Evan's Devil's Disciples. Justice prevailed, because the masters finished third in the round-robin play-offs, dead on their feet. Reid's team won the title. Greener's, Steele's, Tummel's, Dimon's and Coch- rane's teams, in that order, rounded out the standings. The Ham'n Eggers played only three games this year. They topped a Kent club team, 2-1, tied the Choate seconds, 5-3, and lost to Millbrook, 4-2. The outstanding line players were Ken Tummel, Hank Steele, Ding Cochrane, Rogers Martin and Malcolm Lloyd. The defense was ably handled by Don Hart and Denny Vant. George Agnew's team carne out on top of the tripod league. However Dave Whee1ock's and Bruce Ban- ning's teams were not far behind. BASEBALL The Kids were able to win only two of their eleven games this spring. Both victories were at the expense of Kent League teams. The team's outstanding players were pitchers Pete Tulloch and Bob Sanford, infielders jim Daly and Ted Callender, and catcher Bob Hastings. We wish Coach Brown better luck next year. THE LOWER BOATS The fourth and fifth boats competed in three races each, one with Gunnery, one with Salisbury, and the Little Regatta with both schools. The fourth boat beat Gunnery, lost to Salisbury, and came in second in the Regatta. The fifth boat beat both Gunnery and Salisbury, but also came in second at the Regatta. In the middle of the season our third and fourth boats were able to cop races with Avon Old Farm's first and second crews, respectively. There was especially keen competition this year between the third, fourth and hfth boats. The boat that defeated Pomfret's thirds at the end of the' season had actually been the fifth boat just a few days before. Much credit is due the boys who rowed in the lowest boats, for although they had no opportunity to race other schools, they practiced with fervor and developed strong rivalries in races among themselves. Next year, of course, many of those boys will be in the upper boats. St. Paul's School of Concord, New Hampshire, do- nated two two-man shells to us this year. They proved invaluable in the training of the boys in the top crews. 51 SOUTH KENT SCHOOL Back row: Coach Dingman, Cochran, Banning, Hyatt, Person, Prior, Young, C., Cannon, Pritchard, Smith, Coach Whittemore. Two debates were held during the year. In the fall term Kent won a contest here on the Brannan plan and in the winter Canterbury took a debate on McCarthy. The American Legion Oratorical Contest trials also were held in the winter, at Kent. john Toye scored highest among the South Kent contestants, placing third. In May, South Kent held a round-table discussion with the Housatonic Valley Regional High School, on the topic of Red China. This type was the first of its kind ever held here. The group attended numerous forums, including the bi-annual Housatonic Valley League Forum, held at the nearby high school.
