Sponsored by the Builderts Club the dance was held after the football game on September 25. Some of the events held during Spirit Week included Fifties Day, Sock Day, Red and White Day, and Clown Day. During halftime at the South and Maryville football game the crowd eagerly awaited the presentation of the Sports Queen contestants and the announcement of the finalists. Regina Stanton, who raised over one thousand dollars for the Athletic Department, will long re- member October 30, 1979. As the band played the fight song and the cheerleaders encouraged the crowd to yell, the sounds of excitement grew louder and louder. Features 2 1 Although denim jeans, tennis shoes, and T-shirts re- mained the standard clothing in a studenfs wardrobe, cor- duroy slacks, vests, and velour shirts added a new look to the mix and match combinations. Wind breakers and warm-up jackets were popular during cool weather as stu- dents added layers of clothing to prepare for the energy crunch. 22 Features M-O-V-I-N-G Into the 803 Features 23 UPPER: Mrs. Taylofs homeroom turns in ballots for the election. RIGHT: Lisa Wilkerson, Donna Walker and Michelle Watson assist Mr. Andrews. 24 Features Students Cast Ballots For Class Officers During the first week of December students voted for class officers, which included president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer for each grade. To qualify as a can- didate, students had to turn in petitions signed by twenty five students in the same grade. Before the elections candi- dates campaigned with posters and nametags. Mr. Jim An- drews conducted the election and served as adivisor to the class officers. UPPER: Lisa Wilkerson wears a campaign badge for her favorite candi- date. ALI. merTb Features 25 GM Presents Previews of Progress On December 7, General Motors sponsored an as- sembly to the South students. Consuelo Ty Ancog presented demonstrations using solor energy to power a car, mixed ingredients together to form synthetic mate- rials, and entertained the audience with a talking com- puter and laser beam light show. The demonstrations vividly portrayed the application of scientific discov- eries to modern day living. UPPER: Mr. Underwood introduces the demonstrator. LOWER RIGHT: Rocky Atchley tries to control the gyroscope inside the suitcase. 26 Features Coaches Award Letters at Sports Banquet The South Junior High All Sports banquet was held on December 12, at Ramseys Cafeteria. Guest speakers included Roland James and Brent Watson from the University of Tennessee football team. South coaches presented awards to outstanding team members and awarded letters to participants in football, volleyball, and cross country. Features 2 7 Heres Comes Santa Before Christmas vacation began, the holiday spirit was expressed throughout the school. Y-Teens spon- sored a door decoration contest for first period classes to creatively express their thoughts for the holiday sea- son. Singing carols, exchanging gifts, decorating the school, and attending Christmas concerts students ea- gerly awaited the arrival of Santa and a two-week vaca- tion from school. Features 29 :xd , Soloishts Perform at Christmas Concerts 'During December the chorus presented concerts at the United American Bank, the Hyatt Regency, and the school auditorium. Under the direction of Mrs. Beverly Kerr one hundred and twenty choral members partici- pated in the concerts. Selected soloists performing in- cluded Jimmy Staley, Regina Stanton, Missy Day, Billy Jackson, George Davis, Missy Crowder, Erik Chandler, and Wendy Winfrey. Sponsor Betsy Taylor tleftl and Captain Jill Roberts lopposite pagel provided leadership and guid- , ance to the squad. With chants and cheers like ttRock , J, Steady and We Are Challenged the fans were spir- ited in victory and in defeat. The cheerleaders enjoyed summer camp at UT from July 29th to August 2nd. The squad received second place among all junior high schools in Knoxville for their outstanding work. Sports 37 F ootball The Rockets got off to a rolling start by crushing F ar- ragut 30-0 at home. After this victory they continued the season winning four more games and losing only three. This success would not have been possible with- out the enthusiasm, spirit, and support of the players and fans. LOWER RIGHT: The team encourages their teammates. Sports 39 Coaching As a coach, David Garner per- formed the regular duties, but he also endured more than most peo- ple realized. While watching the plays develop Coach Gamer expe- rienced a variety of emotions - worry, excitement, anger, and satis- faction. After the first practice he realized that the team had some weaknesses, but they were potentially good. Although in the beginning the team did not know how to line up correctly on the court, with prac- tice they improved one hundred percent The volleyball team worked for perfection through- out the season as Gary Mahoney coached the team to earn a thirteen win and two loss record in regular sea- son play. The team placed third in the city tournament after defeating Gresham. Joan Colson and Allene Chapman were selected to the All-Tournament team. Coach Mahoney expressed his viewpoints about the team by stating, ttWe had a lot of people who had never played basketball before, and it took us a while to become con- sistent. Team members practiced daily during fourth period to perfect offensive and defensive skills. Individual effort, determination, and team spirit enabled the team to complete a successful season. Sports 49 50 Sports Tennis and Cross Country The Tennis Team competed against other junior high schools in the area at Tyson Park. Each Saturday during April and May the players faced other teams in single and double matches, and they participated in the dis- trict tournament. The Cross Country Team practiced daily after school during the fall. Mr. Alan Cheatham coached the run- ners and provided transportation to the meets. Students worked during fourth period learning to draw layouts, cropping pictures, and writing copy. With no time to relax the annual staff submitted the final pages in Febru- ary and awaited the arrival of the 1979l80 Annual in the spring. Advanced Band Activities of the Advanced Band were playing at the football games with a special performance at Homecoming, presenting Christmas and Spring concerts, and attending the University of Tennessee Concert Festival in March. Individuals had the opportunity to participate in Junior Clinic in Maryville and the Solo and Ensemble Competition in Jefferson City. The Intermediate Band also performed at the Christmas and Spring concerts. In preparation for next year Mr. Rozelle taught beginning members to read and play music. The Orchestra directed by Mrs. Virginia Raulston presented concerts at the area elementary schools in addition to the Christmas Concert. As a fund-raising project, they sold candy bars. Each week Mrs. Kerr awarded a $5.00 prize to the student who turned in the most money in order to reach the goal of raising enough money to pay expenses for field trips. In December the chorus presented concerts at the United American Bank Plaza, and Hyatt Regency and school. With thirty new members the group membership totaled sixty. Under the leadership of Mrs. Marietta Webb the group planned an eventful year. Members alternated the responsibility of raising and lower- ing the flag each day. In the spring they planned to paint the Rocket and to buy an electric Eraser Dus- ter for the faculty. In addition to regular class- room responsibilities faculty members watched the halls during class changes, checked the restrooms, cleaned up the classrooms, and kept early morning study hall in the cafeteria. Faculty 77 Parents Meet Teachers On October 22, parents were given an opportu- nity to look around the school and to visit with the teachers. The P.T.S.A. held a brief meeting to in- troduce the officers and introduce the faculty. After the meeting an Open House was held in the cafeteria where Y-Teen members served refresh- ments while parents conferred with the teachers. Julie was first nominated by the faculty and elected by the student body. Julie is on the Girls Basketball Team, one of the star volleyball players, and a cheerleader. During the year she participated in many clubs e Chorus, Y-Teens, Builderts Club, and Honor Society. In addition to school work Julie competes in twirling contests, and over the summer she won the title of Miss Majorette 0f the South. 82 Classes Mr. South Junior High School 1979-80 The title of Mr. South Junior High went to Johnny Haun. He was nominated by the faculty and elected by the student body. Johnny has been active in sports dur- ing his three years at South.
