This school year has been filled with many activities: the meeting and making of new friends and the suc- cessful attainment of many achievements. This S IS Boom, too, is filled with many things to help remind us of the year 1960-61. The editorial and mechanical staffs have again produced a book of which we may all be proud. This year's iirst ap- pearance of the choirs was at a Christmas assem- bly which was greeted with much enthusiasm from the student body. Both the second and fifth hour choirs sang in this medley of Christmas songs. The Southern Spectacular's last number featured the girls of the two choirs singing This Is My Country. Both choirs sang in the Spring Concert May 12. The girls, choir and the mixed choir both sang solo songs and in the finale joined together in a medley of songs from Carousel MADRIGALS Singing at assemblies and in the Spectacular, this year's Madrigals have been animportant part of South's entertainment. Lead by Miss Gase, these girls have Worked hard to present such numbers as Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, Deep Purple, and Gossip is Fun. JUNIOR BAND Although together for little over a year, the Jun- ior Band has done excellent playing for the March P.T.A. , the school play, and the Spring Concert. Page 34 Pictured here is the Madrigal quartet which appeared at the Southern Spectacular. They are Chris List, Kris Behm, Xenny Weiker, and Marg- aret Asman, SENIOR BAND Spring Concert, Spectacular, Armistice Day Pa- rade- these are just a few of the many outstanding performances our Senior Band has participated in throughout the school year. The functions of the band this year began with a 'political assembly previous to the national election last November. Fred Borchard, the band's drum major, led the music Armistice Day as the band marched down- town. - South's P.T.A. appreciated the band's perform- ance at their January meeting. Getting the Spec- tacular off to a good start last March was another showing of our band's wonderful skills. ORCHESTRA This year South School's orchestra, conducted by Mr. Shumate, has worked especially hard to prepare the programs which they have presented on various occasions. They participated in several P.T.A. meetings, an assembly on April 20, and our annual Spring concert. Two of their selections for the Spring Concert were Air and March by Henry Purcell, and French Suite by Lully. gf. Mies.- X wll.,'1X. ,, inf'-1, ,. - 1 r'-1 V. Our 9A's leave with memories Of happy, fruitful years. A fad that made the boys jump for joy, Were those pants and coats of corduroy. Dancing fads have hit the nations, The pony and twist were new sensations. A fad this year was bartender shirts, They look real sharp with our pleated skirts. Two movies this year that had no illfate, Were Elmer Gantry and Butterfield 83, Of records that we will never forget Runaway and Blue Moon are the best yet. Are You Lonesome Tonight was really a topper, VVhere the Boys Are was another show stopper. Our teams this year were really the most South surely has a reason to boast. In football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, South's teams never seem to stop winning. A couple who around South really rate, Are Jane and Terry--two years straight ! Although she's only half J ack's size, When they fight, Di gets the prize. A couple that we couldn't miss Is cheerleader Sue and her guy Kris. Although his Presidential duties are through, J ohnas still busy with a girl named Sue. Although he's a menace, Chris knows, That Mark's the best of all the beaux. It's been a great year with a lot to remember But plenty of us can wait 'till September. Page 42 flf . .... .Doug Doughty Walkers, Inc ....... . ............ Albers :Sz Martin HotL1ps .. . . .. Mr. Shumate loaned us articles on India for the cases in our hall. In science we studied the human body. We ended the year studying the Middxel Ages. ' A GRADE SIX, ROOM 254 In social studies this year we have studied the British Isles, China, India and Pakistan. XWe did a map study of Africa. We made scenes of India, gChina, Medieval England for our bulletin boards. We also., made booklets on China and will be doing this for our South and Central American unit. ' GRADE SIX, ROOM 252 The sixth grade in Room 252 has had a busy and enjoyable year. We covered units on South America, Middle Ages, Countries of Europe, China and India. We enjoyed making a frieze on early Britain, shields, weap- ons, and manuscripts. Other delightful experiences were making booklets, book jackets and-Easter articles for the Junior Red Cross. GRADE FIVE, ROOM 262 . Learning about our own state and country has been our big project this year. Everyone chose a state to specialize in and sent for materials. Our letters have brought many in- teresting replies. We are making arelief map of the United States andbooklets to summarize our information. GRADE FIVE, ROOM 256 The fifth grade devoted much time to studying birds, in- sects, solar system, health and safety. The art work was correlated withksocial studies or the holidays. GRADE FIVE, ROOM 158 W We have had a busy and enjoyable year working and learn- ing together. Grade projects in social studies and in science have been interesting, especially the large relief map and mural of the United States.
