Dissecting a grasshopper proves to be an exciting experience for Shirley .lurek and Virginia Brooks. pace A e Demands 'fhorou h Knowledge of Science This year the South Houston science department consisted of nineteen biology classes, five chemistry classes, two physics classes, and two classes of ap- plied science. The three well-equipped laboratories, one each for biology, chemistry, and physics, made it possi- ble to carry out research and experi- ments and to learn proper laboratory procedures. .laye Brauch attempts to dissect a frog during a laboratory experiment for biology.

Emmelinc Dodd, a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State Col- lege with a BA. degree, teaches bi- ology at South Houston. Amon N. Alford, who teaches chem- istry, received his BS. from Sam Houston State Col- lege. He also spon- sors the Hi-Y. -eq.,-ai Richard Smith and Black Culpepper are deeply engrossed in measuring the angle of refraction of light through a piece of glass in Cl physics class. Science Students Learn Ml-loww and Mvlfliyw .Ian Jackson and Judy Lutz are caught in the physics lab eyeing refractions of light through prisms. Physics and chemistry today are two of the most active and important of all sciences. These are the sci- ences that tell the how and why of the nonliving world. They are Con- cerned with matter and energy.
