He was Maurice “Chan Hayes, last year, the senior class lost Chan in an automobile accident in Colorado. Chan was a number one guy in almost everything he did. Chan's musical talents were extraordinary. He could play a large variety of iddition to f instruments and he possessed a wonderful voice as well. In addition to his musical talents, Chan was an exceptional student who took many academic courses. More than just a friend, he was available whenever was a lany ? anyone needed someone to talk to. One of Chan’s dreams was that one day all his friends would become Christians and start attending church where he could fine tune his talents and on a regular basis. Chan planned to attend Murray State University, combine his music and preaching gifts to serve the Lord and hav have fun at the same time. Ja The Chan Hayes Memorial Scholarship was established to fulfill one of Chan’s goals in life students. The scholarship will be given to a deserving band member annually. . WANTED FOR MENTAL CRUELTY: The 1987-1988 school started without one face that had become familiar to all connected with South Hopkins. William Dunning, principal for many years, had been transferred to the Hopkins County Alter- nate School. Consequently, a new face appeared; it was that of James Stevens. All of the students and teachers liked Mr. Stevens and were just beginning to accept him when he was transferred to North Hopkins. Again, the position of principal needed to be filled. The next person to fill this job was one who needed no introductions. Lanny Woodward, former Vice Principal of South Hopkins was welcomed with open arms by the students and faculty; everyone was glad to have him back. Your Senior Year is a time for laughter and a time for tears, a time to have fun and a time to be serious. During the twelve years of school, you have worked hard and at times thought school was boring and not worth the trouble. Once you get out, however, it will probably be one of the dearest places to you, and you may wish that you were still there joking around and goofing off with your friends because after you graduate, many of your friends will go their separate ways. So, even though we are anxious to get out, we must learn to cherish the time we have as Seniors and remember it always. — Tim Gower Tina Barnett Brian Blades Gary Brasher James Brown Senior Class Officers Lorie Harvey — Secretary Lori Qualls — Vice President Tracey Pendley — President Stephanie Carrol — Historian Andrea Allen — Treasurer Renee Bullock Misti Burden Keri Cabaniss Dwayne Carroll George Cotton Kim Crick Edie Cummens Chet Cunningham Hey Leslie. Keith ONE GAME FROM STATE On the night of February 29, 1988, the South Hopkins Lady Tomcats travelled to West Hopkins to battle the West Hop- kins Rebelettes for the first game of the Seventh District. The Lady Cats won and the following Friday night returned to West to meet the Madisonville North Hopkins Maroons for the championship. The Cats beat North Hopkins 59 to 49 to be the Seventh District Champions. On March 10, the Lady Cats travelled to Maroon Gym where they beat the Christian County Colonels which was the first step to the championship game of the Second Region. The second game of the tournament for the Cats was against the Providence Bulldogs. The Lady Cats were again victorious, putting them into the championship game. Although the Lady Cats lost a heartbreaking game against the Henderson Coun- ty Colonels by only four points, they must be commended for putting forth an outstanding effort. After the nets were cut down and the games were all over, our Lady Cats returned to school. They were disappointed to say the least, but everyone knew that no matter what the scoreboard had shown at the end of the tournament, our girls were to be congratulated. An assembly was held in which the tournament trophy was presented to the school. Mr. Woodward seemed to express the feelings of everyone as he concluded the assembly by telling the student body, the coaches, and especially the players how proud he was of them and how South Hopkins had truly been victorious. Even though it was the great talent and coaching of the team that brought them to the final game of the Regional Tournament, the task would have been much more difficult without the sup- port of the students. Throughout the time of the tournament pep rallys were held, posters were made, and morale was boosted. We were proud to say that, at every game, our bleachers were filled with enthusiastic fans cheer- ing the team to victory. CONGRATU- LATIONS, LADY CATS!!! OUTSTANDING PLAYERS All of the players on the team did ex- ceptionally well in the tournament, but a few are to be especially congratulat- ed. The entire starting five, which in- cluded Holly Blanchard, Renee Bull- ock, Susie Barish, Tammy Fox, and Dee Dee Perry were selected to the All- District team. Holly Blanchard, Susie Barish, and Tammy Fox were also named to the All-Region team. THE FIRST ANNUAL SOUTH HOPKINS HUMANITIES WEEK WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. STUDENTS COM- PETED WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASM IN THE AREAS OF ART, MUSIC, DANCE AND LITERATURE. EVERY- ONE HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME THAT THEY ARE ALREADY ANTICIPATING NEXT YEAR’S HUMAN- ITIES WEEK FESTIVITIES. FOOTBALL HOMECOMING THE WEEK BEFORE FOOTBALL HOMECOMING WAS VERY HECTIC. THE FOUR CLASSES WERE BUSY FINISHING THEIR FLOATS FOR THE UPCOMING PARADE. WHEN PA- RADE DAY FINALLY ARRIVED, EX- CITEMENT FILLED THE AIR AS ALL FOUR CLASSES COMPETED HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR FIRST PLACE. AMY FAULK, ESCORTED BY ROB DUNCAN. WAS CROWNED THE 1987 HOME- COMING QUEEN. (ABOVE) MANY STUDENTS WORKED VERY HARD ON THEIR CLASS FLOATS DURING THE WEEK OF HOMECOMING. SENIOR CAR WASH The car wasn't the only thing the school did to raise money for Project Graduation. South also held its first annual Morp Pageant. Morp, prom spelled backwards, is the opposite of prom; the girls asked the guys out and pick-up the bill for the evening. Also as part of Morp, there was also a beauty contest for the guys. The contest was divided into three catagories; swimsuit, tal- ent and appearance. In addition to the contest, a dance was afterwards. Overall, the three events accomplish their main goal, to raise money for Project Graduation.
