You aren't paid by the hour, and who notices those evenings you spend campaigning for South, when such activities aren't mentioned in your contract. You might feel anxiety waiting to see if a Supreme Court decision will rule out the need for your job, or if the snow tires on your Volkswagen will last the winter. You find out that being on the faculty doesn't give you the simplicity of the 9 to 5 man who picks up the mail, or the college graduate working on the ditto machine making twice your salary on half your education. But as you sit at your desk, sipping the lukewarm coffee, looking over the notes for your next lec- ture, you think of how last week they all looked like they were sleep- ing and wonder if they heard a word of what you said. You wonder if they care about what you're trying to do, but somehow you realize that they're thankful to be here and benefit from those long nights of correcting tests and the fact that you're not a faculty member in a mgh schooL butan educaknin a pmce whh nmwe opponunmesthan the Wishbone T. That about sums it up for the production ot Hello, Dolly! - and the whole dramatic year at South. Starting out in November with rehearsals for the Christmas show, then building with Don't Drink The Water, ,surging with the Dinner Show, and finally, ex- ploding with Hello, Dolly! Rehearsals night and day Cand in the morningj, TV and radio ap- pearances by the leads of the show, Froggy Wallace playing the trumpet, using the original Broadway set, receiving the set one week before opening, trying to figure out how that gargantuan train is going to fit on stage, receiving casualties in stage crew every night, The Burrito Brothers having only one dress rehearsal, The Bass Section, selling stationery, having rehearsal with the orchestration only three days before showtime, soliciting patrons, receiving pep talks from Mr. White, soliciting boosters, getting psyched to do the waiter's gallop even though you've been prac- ticing it for a month and a half, aching muscles, soliciting ads, re- ceiving a standing ovation in the middle of the show - all this and more went into making this the most exciting, exhausting, climac- tic, ecstatic year for the Masques. And Dolly'll never go away again in the memories and hearts of anyone who ever saw or participated in the Ted White prod- uction ot Hello, DoIly! . ln the words ot one man, A dream come true. Things could have been worse without band camp, but this year the Music Making Rebels still kept up their tradi- tion of excellence both on and off the field. As an almost anti-climax to Hello, Dolly, they again exhibited their best talent on stage to a small, but satisfied audience, who, after hearing one of South's best concerts, will be back next year for more. Things might have seemed out of proportion in a stadium that still echoed with cheers for World Series victories, A small team was lost on a liftyeyard-long bench, 300 fans were dwarfed by tiers of seats built for 50,000, and a faintly visible 50 piece band was lar removed from the usual 250 musicians that move in on a Sunday afternoon, As Jim Palmer finished his last season some may feel he was disappointed. But with a 13-12 comeback over Wheeling, and showing Canevin who's number one, the Rebels made it clear they deserved to play on the same field some of the best have visited. First, it marked the return ot Coach Bob Eck- ley after 2 years absence and sec- ond, it began a rebuilding program to help establish South as a wrestling power in the years to come. Half the members of this year's varsity were freshmen or sophomores. These un- derclassmen went through a year ot trial and error while learning the tun- damentals ot wrestling. You don't even know if you're on the team until the day of the game, and if you do play there's always a chance of rain, or a muddy field. But you still have memories of great moments, like the time you stayed out all night at the prom and had to play a game at 9:00 the next morning, and when you got to the field you found the opposition thought it was a night game. What a way to get a victory . . . Oh well, maybe next year if vve're good enough, we'll have some fans. Ed Blieszner 122 -wnig QM? , wg, 24 SENICDRS ff.
