It looks back, and moves on. lt roots deep, and gazes up. Its life has been caught in the frozen movements of a great chain of bridges linking industry and commerceg in the convulsive eruption of the rush-hour traffic, in rolling hills, in rippling muscles under sweat-streaked skin. The city's pulse throbs in speeding trains and soaring airplanesg in the rhythmic changes of silent rivers. Today becomes yesterday. Tomorrow be- comes history. People and buildings disappear, but the city remains. Pittsburgh lives. D , .A,, , f 1 I ? , I nullw 'llgrllfh 'Ill U 4 3 ll rl: U rilff. I t E' 5 ,J hu Ulf lEE'llIEltl:5 lima i L. In all situations he has been, willingly and faith- fully, both counselor and friend. No matter what the difficulty has been, he has always calmly devised a sensible solution for each problem. We hope and believe that he has enjoyed our companionship as as much as we have enjoyed his leadership. We are grateful that he has treated us as equals. We hope that he will remember our class with warm re- gard. 8 Mr. Albert George It was a most happy day when we February seniors requested Mr. Albert George to be our class sponsor. Many of us had learned to know him at Knoxville, where we had enjoyed being members of his classes. At South Hills, we met again the Mr. George whose sense of humor never deserted himg who always proved both friend and trustworthy con- fidant. lt was simply renewing an old acquaint- ance. Now, we never shall forget him. We hope that he, too, will always remember with affec- tion the February class of 1958. The Sponsors 'i Ule Honor Mrs. Marguerite Pritchard Mrs. Marguerite Pritchard's years as girls' adviser at South Hills were fortunate ones for our school. There was never a problem, never an emergency which she did not meet with her own special talents for kind understanding, wise counseling, and positive action. We wish for her that all her difficulties will be merely unimportant incidents, as ours became under her wise guidance. . K L WW., - ...aww 7' NA .13 . jg s Mr. Fred W. Mack ln spite of his thirty-two years as a teacher in South Hills High School, Mr. Fred W. Mack is primarily a student, an enthusiastic and energetic one - a lover of ideas. This quality accounts for his great success as a teacher, for his amazing in- terest in and knowledge of many diverse fields. We wish him years of enjoyable ac- tivities. We know that Mr. Mack will never retire. The Office A fragment added to the eye makes a difference. Dr. William McCarthy and Nurse Alta Becker are saving a pupil from temporary blindness. it Meet our indispensable officeforce: Miss Ruth Adams, Mrs. Lucille Wolfram, Mrs. Gladys Quayle, and Mrs. Willa Kasten. This is the room where are housed textbooks and supplies. The book clerk, Mrs. Kasten, is assisted by David Stricker and Robert Howells. Athird book room aide, Frank Brown, is not in the picture. xl M .. 15 - i Q 5 , . ' i X A former crack South Hills mathematics teacher, Mr. Frank Crowley, who joined the counseling staff in September, is rapidly makinghimself indispensable in his new position. Miss Marjorie Siedle, South Hills counselor, sits at her new desk in her old- new office, from which she was banished during the period of its renovation. Appro- priately, she is reading Guide Post to Careers, at her right hand the telephone ready to ring for the twenty-fifth time. The Counselors Mrs. Mary Figura succeeds Mrs. Pritch- ard as girls' adviser. She has entered into her new duties so efficiently that one feels that she has always been a part of the South Hills organization. SEHIURS The Hall There is no likelier place than the hall to observe the life of the school. Before and after school and between classes, the hall is alive with fun-loving students eager to meet their friends and discuss what's-what and what-will-be. The hall may not be the most peaceful place in the school at all times, but it does afford room for that moment of relaxation between classes. Should the moment be unduly prolonged, however, then there is trouble. Robert Abraham and un identified associates ex amine the second floor bul letin board. 'w rl 'al Bl Hit The Spire ln building, earlier citizens of Pittsburgh may have considered ne- cessity rather than beautyg however, they were not unmindful of the nat- ural beauty of their city - of its rivers, and of the flowing lines of its hills. Today, builders seek to make the utilitarian beautiful, whether their material is of wood, stone, concrete, steel, tile, or alu- minum. They observe line and pro- portion, trying to harmonize design with the natural setting. The spire of the Smithfield Evangelical Protestant Churchfleftj symbolizes the beauty of man's aspiration for God and His spiritual gifts. The congregation is one of the earliest in Pittsburgh. lt has rebuilt its place of worship four times, and each time on the site granted it by William Penn. In the mud and rain, Allderdice handed South Hills a 19-0 loss the following week. The next game with Schenley looked like a tie until on a do-or-die pass play in the fourth, the Oakland team scored, to win 6-0. Under the expert guidance of Coach E. J. Mazeski, the champs won seven games. They lost two in city play. When South Hills beat Peabody inabest-out- of-three series, 3-2 and 7-6, they won the school's fourth city championship of the year, the three others being in city relays, track, and tennis. In the first city championship game with Peabody, Paul Millstine was the hero, sing- ling in the first inning and allowing Lavelle to score from third, tripling in the fifth, and scor- ing 'on an infield out. Then, to win the game, he broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inningwith a home run. The second game was just as thrilling as the first, In the second, after Ed Heinsius hita home fun, Jim Nagy walked, moved to third on Tala- rico's single, and scored on an error. Vasquez tripled in the third, scoring on an infield out. Then, South Hills' power exploded for three runs in the sixth when Lowen and Millstine reached base via errors, and Heinsius and Bob DeMarco belted successive doubles. Finally, with the score tied 6-6 in the last inning, Bill Lavelle walked, stole second and third and, in a daring move, stole home to win the game. f We . ,v 3 J I w 1 5 4. :'f 5N' mum-1.1 .nuff . .H 134- ...mm-.
