Each day for four years, the 1955 seniors have moved toward graduation by taking merely one step at a time. Then, too, this book was assembled by the staff step by step. On occasions, we found ourselves walking up a blind alley and had to make an about-face. Moreover, we have often missed a step and have had to catch ourselves. Cn the whole, however, we have enjoyed the journey. As you go through these pages, we request you to ex- amine each picture, read each caption, keeping in mind that the book itself is both a step back in memory and a most important one ahead, for those fortunate seniors of 1955 whose high school route passed through South Hills. Uma unify ,MU ciao! VN' A 'Wisdom that may guide Always, at each turn in the road winding through South Hills, we find our principal, Mr. Fred W. Glaser, ready to lend a helping hand, in the form of a humorous observation here, a prod forward there, words of encouragement or wise advice everywhere they are needed. ln the picture above, Mr. Glaser confers with three of the February senior officers: George Cin- quegrane, Mark Moore, and Ben Brenner. John M. Mc Laughlin Vice-Principal our youth Dr. John McLaughlin, South Hills' vice-principal, busy man that he is, is always ready to stretch out the helping hand. We rely upon his firm, wise guidance. Here he directs three members of the Service Squad, Jack Thomas, Thomas Hinsch, and Charles Cook. Miss Marjorie Siedle, our coun- selor, confers with Mrs. McGavern, Nancy's mother. More often, the conference is between the counselor and the student. Miss Siedle has steered us past many blind alleys. S Any ninth grade pupil gets off to a flying start if she consults Mrs. Marguerite Pritchard, the girls' ad- viser. Naturally, when one gets to be a senior, like Janet Weiss, the thing to do is to ask Mrs. Pritchard. A close friend of every South Hills student, Mr. Andrew Chuska, our activities director, performs so many countless tasks each day that we often wonder how he gets them all done. Sometimes the fac- ulty mail boxes help. Y5 l n n Efficient Miss Irma Griffiths, our bookclerk, has all kinds of know- ledge right at her fingertips. With the help of her able bookroom assist- ants, she keeps our supplies and books in apple ple order. sq K V mx ' Q, Q n ,Q rawn n our o oom s Br n Th b l bo kr i BY , furnished by Gerald Justh and Andy ks , Pyros. ml Everyone meets Miss Alta Becker, our school nurse, sooner or later. QOf course, this was true in name only.y She has always understood our need for supportfand encouragement. In fact, she often catches us before we fall. A superior English teacher, our sponsor has taught us more than English, to enjoy our school experiences, both the rough and the smooth. MR. GOURLEY Mr. James E. Gourley, sponsor of the class, is both counselor and friend. He always believes the best of us. Perhaps his scientific training has lead him to accept the philosophy that nothingis ever lostg it simply changes form. So far as Mr. Gourley is concerned, possibilities in every freshman are unlimited. As seniors, we have learned to appreciate our sponsor's faith in us. May we never let him down. One of the most beautiful rooms in the school is the library. Clara Lou Williams and Cathie Rounds are frequent visitors here. They are shown admiring a plant display and ex- amining one of the numerous books which tell about this wonderful old world of ours. Watch out, Caesar, we might well advise Alvin Voigt, who represents the great Dictator in a scene from 'Julius Caesar', as enacted in Miss Elsie Murphy's 10 A English class. This is the problem that Brandon Vestal proves to a very attentive fourth period solid geom- etry group. Mr. Crowley is the teacher. History Miss Frieda Yetter shows the gloves of Greek architecture to tenth-grade pupils in a world history class. After winning the first two, the team dropped the next three straight. The first two of these games were at home. These two losses at home put the team into a tailspin, from which they never quite pulled out. The rest of the season was high-lighted only by the sharp shooting of Simmen, who is the Tunnel- ' ites' candidate for the all-city team. l 74 South Hills ....... Perry 57 61 . . . .
