Your quest for that which you desire in life is now well on its way. But you will often wonder, as you pause for introspection, 5 whether or not you have chosen wisely. Do you know what con- U' f I . ? stitutes pure happiness? Must you have fame? Must you have riches? ls contentment the answer? And finally, if you find that 5 which you seek, will you be satisfied that you have sought wisely? Do you have your Q feet on the solid ground of logic or are you caught in a mire of UP indecision? Q You, and you alone, hold the answers to these questions. B f jr. What's In a Name? SINCE the Senior A's have only one set of twins, they have decided to follow them on their summer vacation. The twins, John and Riia Myron, had a great Deal to do, however, before leaving. To be in Siile, Rita made herself a Gray sport dress with a Green Bow- fmanj from a McCall pattern, and John, instead of helping, went to a Seckatary Hawkins meeting at a Harris theater, but since he had promised to Bauer something, he bought a box of candy at Macd0nald's on his Way home. Weil Rita was finishing her dress, John was Ahel to go to the Barhers Qhe hadn't a Shafer some timej. Friiz Hein, the Deutsch Barher, who was living with his brother, a Mason, wished him Lofz of Luck, and his wife reminded John to be sure and Zenzler a postcard. Before going home, John stopped to see his friend Bohhs McGahey and said, Will you lend me your Car,111ack? Our fCrawJ fora s Leakey gasoline tank is getting fixed, and I want to do some shoppingf' Bohhs said he could have the Ansfin, and so John started on his way. He stop- ped at Bard's and al' Ml.'CdIIIl,S, but the only things that he bought were a loaf of Haller's bread, a can of Davis baking powder, a jar of Dill fonj pickles, a box of Gram 111 crackers, and an O'Henry candy bar. Later that evening, Rita went down to Kelly's drugstore where she bought a bottle of Car1fer's ink, an ice cream Coen, and a can of Johnson's wax. When Rita returned home, she found a box of Roses from Gal- lagher's florist shop from Marcus Wunderlick, who had Hurd that she was going away. Since they had decided to leave on the Morrow, the twins began their packing, among the Buchfheifjs they took were Werfz by Edgar Allen Poe, Dr. Jekle and Mr. Hyde, a pamphlet by Jim Corhett and Jack Dempsey describ- ing the half-Nelson, and for their cousin, a book of Robinson Crusoe, telling all about the Savage Land and the Vallor of a Saylor and his Conrad. It was nine o'clock on the Dotzf when they left on Fridy morning, for Miles they had Fair weather, but suddenly, it began to grow Dierker fsorry no darkerj. Rita had the Shizfers, because she was aFraudin the dark, and Crouched down in the car, but John said, Don't be Mervis, nothing Wilharuz you. But just then, the Huoi of an owl frightened him so Bagley that he stepped on the gas and ran Oher the white line. It wasn't Moore than a Minnick until a Burgess appeared and gave him a ticket. That meant that they had to be in court the next day, so they stopped over at a hotel. The manager, Joseph DeCharrance told the Porfer to take their bags to their rooms, and then invited them to an organ recital, melodies from one of the Gillierf and Sullivan operettas were played on the new Hammolld electric organ, and later the 41 Nf- .. pf!- organist played selections from Wagner. Although the program was very ine, the twins were thinking Waff the judge was Ahf to say in the morning, and John felt somewhat like a Sickuzan. The next morning John was brought before Judge Pafferson, who was to see that Jusfice was obtained. The judge Ballledj John out for being a road Ogg, but since nobody was hurt and John had only Bracken a Ronle, he showed his Wisdom by not making him pay a Harvey fine. Before starting on their way, the twins stopped for lunch, and Rita warned John to Acker like a Man and not Duncan his coffee because it wasn,t Reich. In the restaurant the radio was on, and there was an argument as to whether to listen to Lorenzi jones or Jack Haley or the Feick between Lewis and Schmelling, but the twins decided that Dauius Raley be going, so they missed the outcome of the discussion. Soon Rita said, Heisey uncleis Barnes and his Fieldfiugjs of Goldfsfromjen Weei, and look, that Workman, Manning the Binder, is getting the Weet ready for the Miller. By this time, they had reached the farmhouse and were greeted by their uncle, Walter Baldesherger, who had just told Wallace jankoufiak, the hired man, to take the Wheelfer Muehljhaner into the fWakej held and gather Ujidegraf to keep the Wolfram the door. Their Aunt Leone had a Freyer ready for their supper with Norrishing Sfhjouji for the first course. It was too late to look around the farm then, so since it was Chilfcoiljy, they all sat around the fire. Rita played her Mandelin, and John made Miscik on his Fluke while the others sang Mazza's in de Cold, Cold Ground . The next morning the crowing of the Cox awaken- ed them. After breakfast they took a walk, and the Koch said that they Becker be back by Neuner there wouldn't be a cMCJC1'7l11l left to Fedon. They saw the La1nh's in the field and the Martins sailing through the sky. They ran Pell mell up Hilsdon dells, for they were Yeager to see the Schufan in the pond Archer pretty neck. Entering a Greenwood filled with Beach trees and small Bushes whose Burrs Caugh feyjt and Hooked themselves on their clothes, they saw a Kuhn run up a tree and a Lazard scoot under a fWyj rock fij. Because Rita was going along with her nose up in the air looking at a Larkin a tree, she tripped on an Orris root and Bender ankle. John Cuda helped her up, but only said that she was a Cilia girl for putting on Ayres. In the Schade of a Low fenj Sfzzniji not far off, a Jay was chirping gaily. Just then, they heard their cousin Collin fsj them, so they had to go back. When they reached the house, so Jw-- O 1'-5 Q S nys' ':'. U . . To his disgust, he had to be satisfied with a Coullieng fDoujglass of fBrunj wasser until dinner. However, when his aunt saw his disappointment, she said, Well, if you'll get the apples and peel them, I'1I make you a pie. You may be sure that by the time he had inish- ed, John had become a fMcj Master apple Peelor. After a dinner of chile con Carney, the twins went to the townls new theater fa very Swanky placejg the feature picture starred Gary Cooper, Miriam Hopkins, Bob Byrnes, Chester Morris, and Frank Morgan. The audience Boofsjed when the villian, Boris Karfnafej loff pulled the Krieger on his Foster sister. In the comedy, Mickey Mouse, dressed as Buck Rogers, was seen Rowland down a fCogj hill. When they left, John said that although he enjoyed the en- tire show, his Prejerence was the comedy, but Rita said that she liked the feature picture better and could Fallon love with Gary Cooper anytime. At the house, John couldn't get the key in any of the Laux and was just Ahhott to Stitt down on the steps to gaze at the Starzyn the ski when his uncle opened the Doerfler them and told them to Kim in. Defeated but once, the team maintained a steady pace to win the section championship. They played a good brand of ball all through the season. Seldom going on heavy batting sprees, they came up with fast fielding, timely hitting, and reliable pitching. Davis and Fassinger did quite well in their job of catching. A lot of credit goes to these two boys and also Icardi for the splendid manner in which they handled our pitchers. Capalbo, Weber, Liebegott and Karnrnerer made up a strong staff of moundsmen. The inield was sparked by the brilliant playing of captain Willie,' Miller at shortstop. To backiup this stellar three-year veteran was Fraas at first base, Fraudin at second, and Russell at third. Reserve men included McCaughan and McGill. Patroling the outfield posts were such men as Feick, Dabecco, Cook, Brady, and a few of the pitchers. Our boys will tangle with Peabody's section one champs to decide the top honors of the city. his KEWFM , N .v . or - -3 ta- 21, Q'3 fs.,..JA.f, XX-ll-K-BWQ '5 I' ,l 6 IA f' 2 12TEst-a..e. if f i 2 x Etf3 1 r, . ml . 5 N E.. 1,14 ' 1 , Q -Wil'-9115 ' i '1ril':iQ511f,W ' f i fi e L f m ay 'ix F Q' 4 , 5 5 WI. flu Q Ilia' W 5 l'g1i-E p 1 l,l ll lgqii-:ra 552' Eg?- ' ,I .' 3 9 1, fit if 6 n ff- V A 'A. The program, which was in three scenes, presented the leading activities of the club. Erma Crouch acted as announcer. A dialogue, given by the officers of the club, Anna Mae NVieland, Ruth Goldstrom, Rosemary Kelleher, Irene Mespelr, Louise Bagganni, and June McCartney, represented a club meeting in which qualifications for membership into the club were openly discussed. Two of the girls' games, deck tennis and badminton, were demonstrated. Participants in the deck tennis were Dorothy Jankoviac, Betty Moss, Vivian Miller, Claire Fitzpatrick, and Betty Lempe. Badminton, a . .. Our president, Anna Mae Wieland, introduced the Five Star Hit Parade, in which a large star was formed with each point representing a leading sport. Five girls, outstanding in their field, placed each point in its place, Agnes Kubelick for basketball, Betty Dan- fort for swimming, Dorothy Jankoviac for mushball, Rosetta Jones for volleyball, and Rosemary Kelleher for tennis. Dancing was featured in the last scene. Colored lights showed the change from afternoon to evening and all the girls were on the stage taking part in the frolic. A May-pole dance in which Mary Johnson, Evelyn Shrader, Francis Hansberry, Jean Magrini, Margaret Campbell, Rita Regan, Litia Tesi, Clare Reis, Ellen Giannakos, Jane Knoepp, Elaine Banks, and Margie Fair took part, was one of the highlights of the program. The beauty of this scene was accentuated by the colored rainbow costumes which were made by the girls in their sewing class under the supervision of Miss McCahill. A tap dance was given by Edith Morgan, Bernice Kuehner, Dorothy Glumac, Dorothy Lynch, Doris Simmons, Biola Bonadio, Claire Pollick, Olive Remely, and Margaret Neuner. The program was concluded by singing of the Club song, which was written by Erma Crouch, and a salute to South Hills. . ,-M ,,,x i 'av a5'1Q5'Q Twfglxp XQ- J X ll li AWN il x H,-J -.5 lv: iamixifif R ll '1 LRG , ,,... . -. ... Deck tennis was admirably played by Elma Davis and Louise Baganni, while the two champions, Midge Miles and Hannah Rosenthal won out in shuflleboard. A committee was appointed for formulating such an organization and now there is a branch of this society in practically all public high schools throughout the country. This National Organization has its headquarters in New York City and is recognized from coast to coast. The South Hills branch was organized in 1929 and has had a marked success. At the beginning of the semester there were 30 members in this chapter. 43 initiates were added to the roll at the initiation cere- mony. Of the entire group 53 are Senior A's. Xi? James Alm We've Got to Have Money is the cry of many a senior class, therefore it was an appropriate title for the senior class play presented on Thursday and Friday evenings, May 12 and May 13, 1938. It was a de- lightful comedy with the necessary romantic touches and was received with much ovation by large au- diences. Dave Farnum never wanted to go to college but Tom Campbell did, so the two fool Dave's guardian, by having Tom give Dave his degree. The guardian arrives at Columbia on Commencement Day, bringing Olga, Dave's sweetheart. The secret is exposed. He stops Dave's allowance and forbids the pursuit of Olga. Dave goes on his own, organizes a Brain Pro- motion concern, stumbles onto a leather patent, bluffs a rich man into backing him and emerges trium- phantly as a smart business man and Olga's affianced husband. Much appreciated was the work of the various com- mittees. Those in charge of the stage properties were Sue Beth Archer, Ruth Bagley, Mary Coen, Dorothy Davidson, Frank Kelly, and Audrey Minneck. Mar- garet Cox, Lenora Evans, Jane Justice, Rita Myron, Ralph Shaffer, and Sarah Zitzman worried with the hand properties. Dashing hither and yon with grease paint, powder, rouge and what-have-you were the make-up artists, Marjorie Cantwell, Hilda Cohen, Elizabeth Evans, Edna Grau, Patricia Koch, Marjorie Miller, Gerda Rose, Olive Stump, Ruth Krieger, and Rosalyn Rosenthal. The prompters, Rosemary Kell- eher, Ruth Schwartz, and Wilma Swank, also helped with sound affects. Although the above, themselves, remained in the unseen , their work helped to make We've Got to Have Money one of the largest, most successful and thoroughly enjoyed class plays ever produced in South Hills High School. Nearly eighteen hundred were present during the two performances. From the very first rehearsal to May thirteenth, everyone connected with the play cooperated in the finest way possible, turning what should have been hard work into enjoyment. With patience-and it did take a great deal--Miss Price skillfully shaped the production until it approached a state as near perfec- tion as was possible. Then the big night! Everyone scurrying about in that last minute excitement that one can appreciate only after a similar experience. Minute details that had to be attended to, everything in order before the curtain went up. After the first act Earle Bracken and Herbert Keebler made quick changes from Doolin and Lucas, to reappear as the Barber and Levante in the second act. Mustaches had to be supplied for several of the characters as well as wigs. The characters were calm throughout the en- tire performance. Mingling among the audience after the play, many favorable comments were heard. Thus closes another successful page in the history of the South Hills dramatic department. Not only has it achieved a praiseworthy standard of musical efficiency but its fine military marching while on parade and the precision with which the complicated drill formations were executed has Won unusual admiration. Its success reflects very' creditably to the excellent training afforded by Mr. Arthur and Mr. Evan and their associates. However, a contributing factor to this success was due to the willing cooperation of each individual in the organization. From the beginning of the fall semester to the close of the football season the band and its instructors spent several hours every day after school rehearsing and drilling. The Parade Band consists of seventy-two members. It has nine marching columns and a line leader for each rank in marching formation. The concert band has the same personell as the parade band except for additional drummers and trumpeters required for marching purposes. CHOIR The present South Hills vested choir rates high among the best ever organized in this school. It is under the capable direction of Miss Wayman that they have reached this standard. They have done much to contribute to the success of the radio broadcasts. Their Work in assemblies during the past semester has been of unusually fine quality. The choir not only sings within South Hills but they participated in a program given for a parent- teachers meeting at Snodgrass School in Duquesne Heights. SHIRLEY GANO Shirley Gano highly de- serves to be recognized as the songbird of South Hills. Her brilliant performances will long be remembered as one of the outstanding features of the school's programs. She is the leading soprano of the A Capella Choir and singing gives her much plea- sure. The majority of soprano solos heard on our radio broadcasts were sung by Shirley and she contributed much to the success of various assembly programs. Among her best per- formances was her portrayal of Liane in the operetta, Sweethearts',. But . . . Shirley is versatileg she not only sings, she can act. We shall never forget her humorous char- acterization of Miss Finney in our class play We've Got To Have Money . Add to all this a charming personality and the total is Shirley Gano. Aldo Icardi The Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Arthur, is one of the most efficient organizations in the school. It plays for every assembly program, most of the broadcasts and all evening performances given by the school. This heavy schedule creates work which requires long hours of rehearsal. Due to recent changes in school routine, only one period a day can be allotted to this rehearsal. This necessitates much after school practice. This organization has 37 members. Its instrumen- tation is that of a full concert orchestra, including a Hammond electric organ. Mr. Arthur and his stu- dents have devoted much of their own time to prac- tice and planning of programs to make this orchestra one of which South Hills may well be proud. WILLIAM RALEY As concert master of the orchestra, William Raley has distinguished himself in the Held of music. His duties in this position are important ones for next to the leader, he is the most necessary mem- ber of the orchestra. It is his work to keep the orchestra a united ensemble. Bill has been a member of this organization for 3 years. He participates in many other school activities. Besides being concert master, he is president of his home room and served as a cheerleader during the football-season. Billas pleasing ways have made him very popular and his infectious smile is known to every one. CHARLES RICKMOND Acting as drum coach in the band, Charles Rickmond has earned recognition in South Hills hall of fame. In- structing the boys in drills occupies many of his after school hours for his job is a never-ending one. With Mr. Arthur's help he works out new drum routines and in- structs the other drummers. Aside from being a member of the parade and con- cert bands, Chuck plays in the concert orchestra. Be- cause of his willingness to give so much of his time for these activities, he has made himself a favorite with all who know him. -------.-iiet,sgG,3IQJa.eau-l-1- 12A CLASS SONG Tune of Thanks For The Memories Thanks for the memory of lessons that we learned, Honors that we earned, Of teachers Hne, knowledge refined, we gained in four years time, How worthy it was. Thanks for the memory since when we first began, You took us by the hand, The things you said are in our heads as well as in the books we read, How worthy it was. We tried to learn by the old way, but you taught us rules with a new sway, And now when we leave on this last day, We'll know just how to thank you now. So, thanks for the memory, Dear South Hills as we go, Our classmates will all know, We might have been a burden and tried to get our word in, g But say you'll forget Wrong things we did, We'll try to be an asset and make you glad that we met, So thank you so much.
