Basketball Tournament On February 27 and 28 the annual Basketball Tournament was held in the Big Exchange Warehouse. The Dragons after defeating Kenbridge and Drakes Branch advanced to the finals in which they defeated Boydton to win the golden trophy. Boydton won the silver trophy and Drakes Branch the bronze trophy. The teams that took part in the tournament are as follows : South Ilill, LaCrosse, Boydton, Kenbridge, Oak Hill, Drakes Branch, South Hill B Team, and LaCrosse B. Team. Tuberculin Test for Seniors On Monday, April 17, the members of the Health Department came to the school to give the tuberculin test to Seniors. A few had X-Ray pictures made to determine the extent of the disease. Senior Rings Arrive The Senior rings arrived in October. They were very attractive and everyone seemed to be pleased with them. Seniors Go To See The Taming of the Shrew In November the Seniors motored to Henderson to see “The Taming of the Shrew.’’ It was shown on the stage by the Avon players, who are widely known professional actors. The play was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Senior Trip to World ' s Fair The Seniors will take a trip to the New York World’s Fair from June 6 to 10. We will go by way of buses from South Hill to Norfolk and then by boat to Baltimore where we will take a fast train into New York. The trip will be under the leadership of Mr. Morgan. On October 12, 1938, the entire school attended the county fair held at Chase City. The school won about sixty dollars including individual prizes. Fifteen

SOME EVENTS OF If ORTANCE Senior Play The Senior Class presented their play, “The Absent Minded Profes- sor” on March 31. It was a very good amateur play. It was sponsored by l Irs. Hubbard and Mrs. Gilliam. The cast included : The Absent-Minded Professor Brooks Smith Aunt Jessica . Elizabeth Pearce Josephine Hope Watkins Sharon Ruth Glass Joan Eva Gayle Joe Watson .. Grover Crutchfield Dave Carter . ... Lewis Watson Miss Melvina Edith Whittemore Emeralda .. Peggy Copley .Air. Butler John Coleman Choral Club Activities South Hill Choral Club broadcast a program over WRVA on April 8, 1939. In addition to the club numbers, Director Walter J. Payne sang two solos and the quartette sang an additional number. Appreciation to Rotarians We wish to express our appreciation to the Rotary Club for their in- terest in the school. Each month they entertain two high school students receiving the highest citizenship grade. This encourages the students to strive for higher citizenship grades. F. F. A. Convention Willie Copley represented the students and E. Y. Noblin represented the advisers of the Middle Virginia District at the National E. F. A. Con- vention and judging contest held in Kansas City, Missouri. Jackson Betts went as a delegate from the South Hill Chapter. The Convention was at- tended by 10,000 members from every state in the U. S. A. and from Porto Rico and Hawaii. The South Hill Chapter was adjudged the best chapter in the United States and was awarded a bronze plaque and $150.00 by the National Convention. South Hill Wins Milstead Trophy Mr. Walter J. Payne, Jr., supervisor of music in Mecklenburg, an- nounced at the recital of Miss Alma Milstead in Clarksville, that South Hill is winner of the trophy offered by the noted singer. The trophy goes to the school showing the greatest improvement in public school music during the year. Fourteen
