It began in December, weeks before the track meets actually began, as they jumped hurdles in the halls and jogged around the building to get in shape. They worked hard and got positive results as this year was a winning one. The season started off with five indoor meets, which was a new experience for the team. Placing 4th. in the Richmond Relays was just the beginning as the team went on to place in other meets such as the Tecumseh Invitational - 1st., the Dayton Relays - 3rd., the Wayne Relays - 2nd., the Miami Relays and Invitational - 2nd., and the Fulton Relays 5th. The team made up of 23 determined young men found that hard work paid off when they won the Sectionals and then went on to become WOL Champs at the meet held at Evans Stadium at Springfield. 1 . This Page Sponsored By: FAMILY UNITED WAY of CLARK COUNTY, INC. 616 Building 324-5551 96 RUN FOR THE WIRE It seemed so easy and graceful when viewed from the stands but down on the track it was a different matter. When the girls lined up waiting for the starting gun, few spectators imagined the pounding of the hearts or the straining of the muscles that the girls experienced as they tensed for the grueling task ahead of them. In only a few moments the race ws over and all the months of hard work was behind the participants. . . . only one was the winner and all the others looked ahead to the next meet with the hope that the next time would be the time forthem. This year South ' s girls were strongest in the sprints and the relays and the team as a whole placed 2nd. in the Wayne Relays, 6th. in the Dunn Memorial, and 4th. in the WOL. This year ' s Most Valuable Runner was senior Alicia Ervin and Mr. Copeland, girls ' coach, said that she would definitely be missed next year. However, many of the members of the 1981 track team were underclassmen and will be returning next year to participate on the 1982 track team. I. Kim Riggins. 2. Alicia Ervin. 3. Gerri Frazee. 4.
