The 1980-81 season was the year for the Wildkittens. With most of their starters from last year coming back, the Wildkittens went 16-5 for the season and 8-1 in the league to capture their first WOL championship. The good times didn ' t end there as the Wildkittens also beat arch-rival North 56-47 for the first time since girls ' basketball began at South, thus becoming the 1980-81 City Champs. Mr. Copeland felt the girls had a better ball team than in the past. He also stated that he was very pleased about being WOL Champs and he felt the girls deserved the honors they received for all their hardwork. Karen Hargrow felt that being WOL Champs was one way to promote spectator support for the girls ' athletic program at South. Rochelle Woods was happy about the season and felt it was a great accomplishment to beat North. Four of the Wildkittens received special league honors this year as Karen Hargrow and Kim Frambo were voted First Team WOL and Rose Patton and Rochelle Woods received honorable mention. 1. Julie Boswell, Melissa Mebane, Belinda Riser, Tammy Smith. 2. Karen Hargrow. 3. Mrs. Henry, Ian Henry. 4. Karen Hargrow. 5. Rose Patton. 6. Jan Henry, Rose Patton. 7. Lynn Crowley, Karen Hargrow. 8. Whether they sailed through the air in an attempt to perform a difficult vault or balanced delicately as they danced on the balance beam, the gymnastists worked with such ease that few spectators ever realized the many hours of hard work that went behind each performance. As the individual girls daftly glided over and around the uneven bars, it was never apparent that they had undergone weeks of bruises and strains to master their particular skill. Even in the free exercise routines, the girls showed only poise and gaility as they moved through the difficult patterns of tumbling and dancing to complete their routines. To the viewer, gymnastics was a sport of beauty; it was graceful and the participants were agile but to the girls who competed in this particular sport, it was many hours of hard work, many feet of tape around strained muscles, and many tubs of cold water for soaking sore muscles. However, it was always worthwhile to the members of the gymnastics team. It was the excitement of individual competition and the fellowship of team participation. 1.
