It was a very positive influence, she said. This year ' s fans were the most spirited ever. Their enthusiasm helped the team through some rough times. Even when the weather was cold, wet, and rainy, the fans cheered the team to victory Friday night after Friday night. The devoted student and faculty fans deserve much praise for their continuous support. Neither rain nor snow nor dark of night stopped Willie ' s Fan Club from their appointed duty of supporting the team from the beginning of the game to the end. We supported the team and the individual members to the best of our ability even when the weather seemed to be against us, said Cyndi Davis. This year ' s Fan Club was one of the biggest South has ever had. The Fan Club, with the help of the advisors and the squad leaders, always seemed to make a difference in the spirit of the crowd. 1. The idea of pinning an opponent ' s shoulders to the mat is easy when a wrestler is working out his strategy in his mind but the feat becomes more difficult in reality when one comes face to face with the wrestler of the opposing team. A good wrestler learns to counteract and to out think his opponent which is what the sport is really all about and where his skill is really tested. There were only a few wretlers at South this year who really did an outstanding job and gave 100% effort to the team in the opinion of Coach Larry Jones, he believed that because of eligibility problems and lack of determination on the part of some of the participates, the team was at a definite disadvantage because they were often unable to complete all of their weight classes which consisted of thirteen wrestlers on the team. By the end of the season there were only seven members left in competition and although Coach Jones was disappointed by this showing, he was proud of the individual scores of the remaining seven team members. Kerby Gaffney was outstanding as a senior as he completed his season with 16 wins and only 5 losses in the 105 pound classification. Coach Jones also complimented Captains Kerby Gaffney and Joe Petticrew for this hard work and the good examples that they set for the other team members. 1, Mike Dellapina. 2. David Ehling. 3.
