Tami Thornton, captain of the team; Cathy Woods, assistant captain; and Vicki Wright, first lieutenant; worked together to lead this group and pull them together into a single unit that thought alike and moved together on the football field. It took a lot of work, practice nearly every afternoon, to learn the many routines and to be assured that when the music began, every step would be synchronized and every smile would be genuine . However, under the watchful eye of Mrs. Saylers and with the determination of the members, the SHS drill team was always a hit at the football games. 1. However, the summer was a time for getting it all together and by the time camp was over, the whole group had experience and confidence. At camp this summer, the 1980-1981 cheerleaders were awarded Most Talented Squad, Super Squad, Most Spirited Squad, and second place overall. When asked what her most satisfying experience as a cheerleader was, Dee Dee Lytle replied, Finally getting my Split Russian without hurting my ankles. The SHS cheerleaders were at the games supporting our team rain or shine, and this year especially rain, as South ' s last three football games were played in pouring rain. When asked how she felt about cheering in the rain, Laverne Hampton replied, I felt that if the football team could play in the rain, we could cheer in the rain.
