SOUTH STUDENTS SPEAK UP Do you tend to get butterflies in your stomach when you have to speak before a group? Then the South High Speech team is the perfect place to overcome your fears and gain the confidence that you need. This club gave its members many opportunities to develop speaking skills and .a gain the poise that is necessary to be a good speaker. One of the big events of this year ' s club was a speech contest between fifteen invited high school teams from Central Ohio. A subject was given to the speakers and each contestant had to give a speech, drawing only on the research he had done before he came to the contest. There were no notes or pre-memorized speeches in this contest. Other activities of the group included two Reader ' s Theaters where the participating members presented A Raisin in the Sun and A Midsummer ' s Night ' s Dream . Speech club is an exciting organization which is not only for the individual who enjoys giving and listening to speeches. It is also for the person who is shy about speaking in public because it offers an excellent opportunity to overcome such fears. 1. Terry Phillips. 2. Kathy Whitt. 3. Donita Johnson. 4. WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY? Is the Herald coming out today? . . . Did you make a song dedication? . . . Can I buy a happy ad? . . . These were some of the questions asked during the lunch periods at South as students discussed the school paper. The Herald, a tri-weekly publication, was often the main topic of conversation around the building as students awaited the distribution of the newest edition. The ever popular happy ads and song dedications were big successes and students were always anxious to see if their name appeared in print. Editor Darryl Peal, Photographer Florence Boyd, DeeDee Lytle, Terri Castleberry, and Pam Ross attended Journalism Camp at Ball State University during the summer months in an effort to learn the latest techniques in interviewing, story writing, and picture taking. Their camp experience proved to be helpful in cementing the entire staff into a working unit and in publishing the Herald this year, for each newspaper seemed to surpass the proceeding one. I.
