5 - FIRST TIME Sophomore Orientation was held in Tiffany Gym about a week before the start of school. It was hot as always and the minutes tended to drag into what seemed like hours as Mr. Wright, principal, and Mr. Barrett, Mr. Crumley, and Mr. Baker, assistant principals, gave informal talks about the rules, regulations, and school policies that the new sophomores would be faced with, in the coming year. After the talks were completed, schedules were passed out and the students were officially members of the SHS student body. As parents tried to help figure out the agenda for the upcoming school year, students tried to find friends and former classmates to compare class schedules and homeroom assignments in the hopes that there would be a familiar face in each class when school started in late August. As a conclusion to this evening of introductions, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of South gave informal tours of the building to both students and parents. It was just the beginning, but it was an important night because it meant that school was about to begin and the Class of 1 983 was now a part of South High School. SOPHOMORE ORIENTATION 105

V i THE GRAND RE-OPENING October, 1980, Rededication and Open House marked the completion of the last Issue One project, South High School. The graduating class of ' 81 was very proud to be the first class to graduate from the new South High School. Some members of the senior class stated, We ' ve come a long way from the conditions we found as sophomores at South. In the fall of the year 1980 we give thanks for and celebrate this community ' s continued desire for educational and artistic progress as exemplified by this building that is without equal, stated Dr. Robert H. Lehman, in the South High School Rededication and Open House Program. When asked how has your experience changed since you ' ve been working in the new building, Mr. Wright stated, There ' s been much less vandalism; the students are taking better care of the building; and I have been more involved in visitations of the school. Also with the new gym facilities I have been more involved with public use of the building. Darin Johnson, a student at South, summed up the experience for most of the student body, Rededication was a special event; I will never forget it. It was a moment in history. 107
