When the girls lined up waiting for the starting gun, few spectators imagined the pounding of the hearts or the straining of the muscles that the girls experienced as they tensed for the grueling task ahead of them. In only a few moments the race ws over and all the months of hard work was behind the participants. . . . only one was the winner and all the others looked ahead to the next meet with the hope that the next time would be the time forthem. This year South ' s girls were strongest in the sprints and the relays and the team as a whole placed 2nd. in the Wayne Relays, 6th. in the Dunn Memorial, and 4th. in the WOL. This year ' s Most Valuable Runner was senior Alicia Ervin and Mr. Copeland, girls ' coach, said that she would definitely be missed next year. However, many of the members of the 1981 track team were underclassmen and will be returning next year to participate on the 1982 track team. I. Kim Riggins. 2. Alicia Ervin. 3. Gerri Frazee. 4. 10 This Page Sponsored By: EASTSIDE RECREATION 3207 East National Road GOOD LUCK GRADUATES Newest in Electronic Games DUECE 98 The tennis team smashed into action this year with new tennis courts and an opportunity to practice at the school instead of car-pooling to the park everyday to get practice time. Brian Roberts, who has played the first single ' s position for the past three years, felt that the tennis team had its good days as well as its bad ones, but he enjoyed playing the game. Although the tennis team consisted of only eleven individuals, the squad actually played in three different sections: singles, doubles, and reverses, [his meant that with the shortage of team members, many of the participating individuals had to double-up and often play several matches at each meet. As the first singles player, Brian Roberts said, It meant that I had to face the opposing school ' s top player in each match and some of the individual players were really good. Other singles players were Phil Goltzene and John Warren. Doubles consists of two team members who worked together to defeat the opposition and this was the one area of the sport where South went co-ed as both of our doubles teams consisted of male- female pairings. The doubles players were Robin Crabtree, Andy Rose, Melissa Everingham, and Bud Mongold. Practice was a lot better this year, stated Brian Roberts, as we could get in a lot of extra practice time with the new courts right outside the building. Tennis is still a lot of work as it is a year round effort to stay in shape, but in the end, all the time and effort seems worthwhile when you win the big match. 1. Coach Libey. 2. Robin Crabtree. 3.
