When the girls lined up waiting for the starting gun, few spectators imagined the pounding of the hearts or the straining of the muscles that the girls experienced as they tensed for the grueling task ahead of them. In only a few moments the race ws over and all the months of hard work was behind the participants. . . . only one was the winner and all the others looked ahead to the next meet with the hope that the next time would be the time forthem. This year South ' s girls were strongest in the sprints and the relays and the team as a whole placed 2nd. in the Wayne Relays, 6th. in the Dunn Memorial, and 4th. in the WOL. This year ' s Most Valuable Runner was senior Alicia Ervin and Mr. Copeland, girls ' coach, said that she would definitely be missed next year.
