There were senior pictures, announcements, graduation gowns, class night, and a senior trip to pay for as well as vocational, college, and athletic decisions to be made. There were credits to be checked and last minute classes to be taken as well as officers to be elected, money to be raised, class trip locations to be selected, and class night plans to be made. Being a senior was not quite as easy as it seemed, but the class elected good officers and everything was soon running smoothly. Money for class activities was raised with the sale of M M ' s and the packing and distributing of what seemed like tons of fresh fruit from Florida. The class trip was schedules for Cedar Point and before long the final decisions of a class flower and motto were made. Being a senior really was quite easy when the officers did their best. When asked if he thought that the senior class officers accomplished their goals, Carlton Daniels replied, At the beginning of the school year, we knew that there would be expendi- tures that would have to be overcome and we came out comfortably on top. p.OR ' « )RID 1 n i m SENIOR CLASS AND OFFICERS 15 SHS ADULT BOOSTERS Salute The 1981 Graduating Class 16 STUDENT LEADERS IN ACTION This year ' s Student Council has been BUSY-BUSY-BUSY. They started out the year with a flashlight pep rally at the City Hall Plaza where the Homecoming Queens were announced. The Homecoming festivities were then continued on game day when Student Council sponsored the traditional Mobile Parade through the down town area, concluding at the stadium just prior to the game. After Homecoming was over, the Council had a number of dances that went very well. In the second week of December, the Candy Cane Sale began which was followed by Santa ' s big entrance on the final day of school before Christmas vacation. The carnation sale was a great success and it gave the Council all the enthusiasm that they needed to host the Winter WOL Student Council Conference which was held here at South on March 4, 1981. Along with all these special events, the Student Council continued to deal with various school problems and the officers, as student spokesmen, met throughout the year with Mr. Wright and as members of the Principal ' s Council. 1. Student Council 17 18 WE OFFER THE RIGHT TO READ jMTI Mt JOMl The library club boasted 43 student members who actively participated in the operation of the library. These library aides learned many aspects of library service such as how to circulate books, how to keep the collection in order, how to assist with reference, how to process periodicals, and how to operate the audio-visual equipment. They also learned how to raise money and how to spend it wisely. This year the club was able to present more than $1 000 worth of equipment to the school a white oak contemporary paperback rack, two Singer Instaload filmstrip and tape machines, two hand crafted white oak check out counters for the new library, and a small filmstrip projector. The 1980- 81 year was highlighted by several memorable events including the Rededication in October when thousands of citizens streamed through the library, the annual Christmas breakfast for the faculty and staff, the spring Yearbook Festival which brought to life the early years of our school, and an old fashioned ice cream social and new book show. These projects brought the club members together in a spirit of friendship and in a spirit of appreciation for our library, our school, and its heritage. 1980-1981 Officers of the SHS Library Club . . . They worked from Band Camp in August through the Band Banquet in May and then dressed one more time for the Memorial Day parade after the seniors had already graduated. They gave concerts and practiced, practiced, practiced. The band was such a popular group this year that the band parents had to order more uniforms for both Marching Band and Concert Band as more and more students wanted to be a part of these musical groups. In order to pay for the new uniforms, the dedicated band members and their parents sold, made, and distributed pizzas. It was a lot of hard work but when they were ready for a performance, everyone was glad that they had worked hard. Life would not be the same without music and thus the choirs are important at South. Not only do they perform at school-oriented activities, they also perform for various organizations outside the school. They practice very hard for their programs and develope a feeling of harmony and togetherness. We learned to work together and through our work, we achieved an excellent rating at contest, said Joanna Shorpshire, the choir president. Mrs. Marshall really is proud of the all the choirs that she stages. I enjoy working with young people and performing groups, said Mrs. Marshall. Even though practices are long and hard, almost everyone enjoys the satisfaction of the final performance. I feel that choir is important because it gives us an opportunity to meet new people and to perform in front of audiences, said Becky Plant, a member of the choir. After all, choir members just ' can ' t stop the music ' CHOIRS 23 jmor Occstcf 24 PEP SPIRIT . KT £ PRIDE From selling balloons to singing the fight song, the junior boosters gave it their all. They always added lots of pep, plenty of spirit, and tons of pride to game days at South High School. We ' ve got spirit; yes, we do. We ' ve got spirit; how ' bout you? was the familiar challenge of the junior boosters to the senior boosters right down the hall. Even when the seniors were beating them (again) in their annual basketball game, the juniors still came on strong with their booster spirit. President Becky Plant, Vice- President Bud Mongold, Secretary Cindy Schwartz, and Treasurer Vinita Wallace led the boosters in promoting school spirit. Becky Plant stated, I think Junior Boosters is a great organization for anyone to belong to. It helps to promote school spirit and helps you to develop your inner self. I. Dana Cornell. 2. Beginning in the fall and going throughout the year, students walking down the hall on game day were often confronted with towering seniors dressed in school color who demanded, Where ' s your gold and blue? These strange individuals also tried to convince people that they simply could not live without a yellow crying towl or a homecoming dance ticket. Behind these sales people were more unique individuals who remained in Room 306 making decorations for the Homecoming Dance or sorting props for the Macho Man contest. Frequently this group would also burst into a spirited cheer or a melody of love songs for Valentine ' s Day. They were totally unique and they were very special to Mrs. Deem, their adviser, and to South. Who was this strange group that dominated the third floor south and spilled out into the entire school with their enthusiasm and support? They were the SENIOR BOOSTERS, number one spirit group at South. SENIOR BOOSTERS 27 BACKING THE CATS Welcome to South . .. My name is Terri ... Wildcats want a victory . .. We don ' t need no music . ..were frequently heard at football and basketball games whenever members of the P.R. Club and Willie ' s Fan Club were around. P.R. Club was a fairly new organization which met and welcomed visiting players, fans, and cheerleaders to South before each game. Terri Estes, a member of the P.R. Club sa id, P.R. Club is fun and exciting because you get to meet people from different schools. The club was a great success this year under the guidance of Mrs. Betty Deem and Mr. Bob Kugler, who was given a plaque at the end of basketball season for the time and devotion he gave to the club. One of the most spirited groups at South was Willie ' s Fan Club, made up of young men and women who supported the athletes and coaches of South High School. In doing this they attended all home and away games, wearing club shirts to signify that they were a special group. It ' s been said many times by team members, coaches, and parents that the Fan Club with their spirit and enthusiasm pulled the teams through many tough games. S ' 1. Terri Estes. Taking messages to teachers, answering phones, running off tests and work sheets, delivering projectors and A-V materials to classrooms, and helping out when ever and where ever a job needed to be done were just some of the jobs taken care of by the office aides and the A-V assistants at South. Mr. Wright felt that this year ' s aides were very dependable and Mr. Barrett acclaimed his A-V aides as good workers who quickly learned to work with the new equipment. Throughout the office complex, secretaries and administrators agreed that the aides were indispensible to the smooth running of the school. Mrs. Warren, who worked very closely with the student aides, stated that it would be hard to run the office without the assistance of the student workers and Mr. Roger Baker stated, I have found the office aides most co- operative and capale of doing a real business-like job for us. 1. Future Business Leaders and Future Homemakers of America are both organizations that are directly related to subjects that students take in school and possible to careers that they will follow after graduation. FBL was a small group this year that basically looked into the career possibilities offered in their chosen field of business. FHA, on the other hand, was a large organization that actively participated in many of the activities that are directly related to future job opportunities. They began their year by making and selling school pennants and then went on to participate in Mock Weddings and Pre-School Day Care. The final project for the FHA was the selling of green ribbons in memory of the slain children in Atlanta, Georgia. Both groups offered their members a chance to take a first hand look at possible career choices. 1. Shannon Taylor, Carlos Stone. 2. Ann Riggins. 3. Marie Channels. 4. Mrs. Myers. 5. ZWEI THREE The German, English, and Spanish Clubs are made up of students from South who are especially interested in these subjects. Although the English Club was not active this year, they had a large number of members and they are hoping that next year they will have an opportunity to become involved in more projects. The German Club became very visible second semester when they once again sold their delicious German Chocolate candy bars. In the spring the club took a special field trip to German Village in Columbus where they sampled native foods and visited German museums and gift shops. The big event for the Spanish Club was their annual ' Tiesta complete with Spanish food and games for all. When interviewed, each of the advisers had different feelings about the activities of the clubs this year. Mr. Alzner, German Club adviser, felt that this year was one of the best for his group but Mr. Wilson was disappointed in his English Club memberships ' lack of participation. Mrs. Braun spoke highly of the Spanish Club, stating that they were a strong group which had stayed active through the bad times as well as the good. I. Mr. Wilson. 2. Mrs. Braun. 3. Mr. Alzner. 4. Tri S, a group of students who were concerned with spiritual service to their school and to their friends had several programs this year where local ministers were guest speakers. They also had impromptu discussions with local community leaders who had offered their lives to the service of others. The Black Awareness Club was a newly formed group which was concerned with the contributions of the Black Community. Beginning a very active year, the group held a Mr. and Miss Black Awareness contest which was won by Marvin Day and Kim Roe. During Black History week, the club sponsored the Central State Dancers in a program which featured Billy Day, a recent graduate of South, who was a solo dancer. To culminate the year, the Black Awareness Club combined its talents with the members of Student Council to . present a memorial service for the slain children of Atlanta Georgia. TRI S, BLACK AWARENESS 37 WHAT A WAY TO DEVELOP SKILLS Each group or organization at South offered its members an opportunity to demonstrate their special skills or talents. The Math Club, under the supervision of Ms. Anne Robinson, put their mathmetical skills to work in a way that promoted spirit and performed a school service. They took charge of the selling of programs at all football and basketball games. The Chess Club, on the other hand, offered its members an opportunity to test and to improve their individual skill at the game of chess. Under the directions of Mr. Whitt and president Thong Tran, the members held tournaments throughtout the school year. The Industrial Arts group, under the guidance of Mr. Crew, are not really a structured group, but who could doubt their skills when they proudly displayed the furniture they had created in their class. Almost everyone looked with envy at the roll-top desk and wood crafted tables that have been created by some of these young men. In specialized shops and laboratories, students develop the skills, understanding, and positive attitudes needed to obtain good jobs and to succeed in the world of work. Although the JVS student is still registered in his home high school and may participate in extracurricular activities there, he or she spends six hours a day in classes at the vocational school with an emphasis on laboratory experiences. Everyone knows who the actors and the actresses will be and there is no doubt ab out the director or his ability. But - did you ever wonder who was working the lights, changing scenery, making costumes, or putting on the makeup? If it wasn ' t for those students who take the responsibility of making sure that all these things are done on time, the drama productions would never start on time or end with the success that has become traditional at South. These invisible people are some of the most important ones in any drama department and they are very special here at South. Most of the crew belongs to or works toward joining a special organization known as the Thespian Society. Crew members are awarded points for participation in school productions and an accumulation of points makes one eligible for spring initiation into the organization. Then the South High Speech team is the perfect place to overcome your fears and gain the confidence that you need. This club gave its members many opportunities to develop speaking skills and .a gain the poise that is necessary to be a good speaker. One of the big events of this year ' s club was a speech contest between fifteen invited high school teams from Central Ohio. A subject was given to the speakers and each contestant had to give a speech, drawing only on the research he had done before he came to the contest. There were no notes or pre-memorized speeches in this contest. Other activities of the group included two Reader ' s Theaters where the participating members presented A Raisin in the Sun and A Midsummer ' s Night ' s Dream . Is the Herald coming out today? . . . Did you make a song dedication? . . . Can I buy a happy ad? . . . These were some of the questions asked during the lunch periods at South as students discussed the school paper. The Herald, a tri-weekly publication, was often the main topic of conversation around the building as students awaited the distribution of the newest edition. The ever popular happy ads and song dedications were big successes and students were always anxious to see if their name appeared in print. Editor Darryl Peal, Photographer Florence Boyd, DeeDee Lytle, Terri Castleberry, and Pam Ross attended Journalism Camp at Ball State University during the summer months in an effort to learn the latest techniques in interviewing, story writing, and picture taking. For those dedicated runners who are members of the team, it means running in the afternoon until you feel that you can ' t take another step and then running a couple more miles just to build your endura nce. It means getting to the course early, running even if you already have blisters on your feet, and then crossing the finish line with few spectators to applaude your efforts. But to the dedicated runners, it ' s all worthwhile. Although the cross country team had a rough season, two new records were set by our top male and female runners. Geri Frazee, set a new girl ' s record of 18:52 in the Beavercreek Meet and David Chapman, who was a true leader, gave a 100% team effort as he set a new record on the wood course. This drill taught the players to work as a team to cover the court and to go after the ball where ever it might be. From a good practice program, it was easy to carry the techniques to the court and into an actual game. Our biggest problem this year was our lack of experience , but we learned to work together as a team, said Jamie Jones, senior members of the Wildkittens 1980 Volleyball team. Volleyball is an all-out effort of everyone. One person can ' t play the whole court by themselves. They need the help and support of every player, stated Dawn Oliver. Although the 1980 Volleyball team did not have a very successful year, the Wildkittens played by the following rule, Whether you win or lose the match, if you have done the best that you could and given it everything that you had, you were a winner. 1. As one of the smallest sport ' s groups at South, this five man team played individually but compiled their record as a team. Under the leadership of senior Bret Kugler, the golf team won eight of its matches and a pleased Coach Jim Moyers stated that this year ' s team did show an over-all improvement. Coach Moyers felt that his team was handicapped by lack of pre-high school experience and little team practice before the early fall season began but he felt that the team members worked hard and did well finishing ninth in the WOL. When asked how he had enjoyed his participation on the golf team, three year member Bret Kugler said, My experience in golf was a good one because we had a good coach. Although we didn ' t win many matches, Coach Moyers kept encouraging us. We were a small group, but everyone on the team developed a friendship for each other and we all got along well. Even though it was a season plagued by rainy nights and muddy fields, it was filled with exciting pass plays, long yardage runs, and good defense. It was a season that excited fans and pleased coaches and players. Senior center Darryl Peal stated that the team worked well as a whole. He said, As a player, I never felt like I was alone on the field. I always knew I could count on my team mates and I really enjoyed the season. Senior half-back Tim Lewis seemed to sum up the feelings of many of the players when he said, I would have liked to have had more opportunities to have been a greater help to the team. The idea of pinning an opponent ' s shoulders to the mat is easy when a wrestler is working out his strategy in his mind but the feat becomes more difficult in reality when one comes face to face with the wrestler of the opposing team. A good wrestler learns to counteract and to out think his opponent which is what the sport is really all about and where his skill is really tested. There were only a few wretlers at South this year who really did an outstanding job and gave 100% effort to the team in the opinion of Coach Larry Jones, he believed that because of eligibility problems and lack of determination on the part of some of the participates, the team was at a definite disadvantage because they were often unable to complete all of their weight classes which consisted of thirteen wrestlers on the team. By the end of the season there were only seven members left in competition and although Coach Jones was disappointed by this showing, he was proud of the individual scores of the remaining seven team members. Kerby Gaffney was outstanding as a senior as he completed his season with 16 wins and only 5 losses in the 105 pound classification. Even in the free exercise routines, the girls showed only poise and gaility as they moved through the difficult patterns of tumbling and dancing to complete their routines. Practice was a lot better this year, stated Brian Roberts, as we could get in a lot of extra practice time with the new courts right outside the building. Tennis is still a lot of work as it is a year round effort to stay in shape, but in the end, all the time and effort seems worthwhile when you win the big match. 1. Coach Libey. 2. Robin Crabtree. 3. This was a special night as Bucky Walters, Athletic Director at South for almost two decades, was retiring and much of the program was dedicated to saying thanks for a job well done. The traditional gold sports jacket was an honor for Bucky but the real surprise came when Principal John Wright announced that the new girls ' gym was officially being named the Bucky Walters Gymnasium. Although Mr. Walters was the center of much attention, he graciously shared his spotlight with the many young athletes who were honored on this special evening. Included in the awards being presented by the various coaches were the Most Valuable Players in each sport. It was hot as always and the minutes tended to drag into what seemed like hours as Mr. Wright, principal, and Mr. Barrett, Mr. Crumley, and Mr. Baker, assistant principals, gave informal talks about the rules, regulations, and school policies that the new sophomores would be faced with, in the coming year. After the talks were completed, schedules were passed out and the students were officially members of the SHS student body. As parents tried to help figure out the agenda for the upcoming school year, students tried to find friends and former classmates to compare class schedules and homeroom assignments in the hopes that there would be a familiar face in each class when school started in late August. As a conclusion to this evening of introductions, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of South gave informal tours of the building to both students and parents. It was just the beginning, but it was an important night because it meant that school was about to begin and the Class of 1 983 was now a part of South High School. The graduating class of ' 81 was very proud to be the first class to graduate from the new South High School. Some members of the senior class stated, We ' ve come a long way from the conditions we found as sophomores at South. In the fall of the year 1980 we give thanks for and celebrate this community ' s continued desire for educational and artistic progress as exemplified by this building that is without equal, stated Dr. Robert H. Lehman, in the South High School Rededication and Open House Program. When asked how has your experience changed since you ' ve been working in the new building, Mr. Wright stated, There ' s been much less vandalism; the students are taking better care of the building; and I have been more involved in visitations of the school. Also with the new gym facilities I have been more involved with public use of the building. Darin Johnson, a student at South, summed up the experience for most of the student body, Rededication was a special event; I will never forget it. It was a moment in history. 107 This Page Sponsored By: COMMERCIAL RUBBER STAMP CO. 2953 South Yellow Springs Street Springfield, Ohio 45506 322 - 1924 Trophies - Plaques - Medals Ribbons - Silver - Pewter Walnut Awards - Custom Design And Hot Stamping Available Fraternal and Business Logos Expert Engraving - Fast Service Saturday and Evenings by Appt. It was just the beginning of an exciting week of pre-game preparations that included the final choice of five girls who would make up the homecoming court; the difficult selection of five men to escort the queens; and the demanding task of picking just the right outfit for the game and for the dance. The excitement built as the week progressed until the festivities actually began with the drumbeat of the marching band which led a pre-game parade from the school to the football field. The final step was the homecoming dance and seeing who would be named the new Queen of Queens. ONCE IN A LIFETIME Homecoming is a time for all alumni to return and once again be a part of South. It also is one of the most exciting events of the year, which this year included the Flashlight Pep Rally at City Hall. This was a special evening because it was the night when the top five Homecoming Queens were announced. When asked how she felt that evening, Melissa Rowland replied, I was shocked and honored that my classmates would choose me. Despite the dreary weather at the Homecoming football game, the queens looked their best. The Grand Finale of the Homecoming weekend was the Homecoming Dance where the Queen of Queens was chosen. Joanna Shropshire had the honor and pleasure of becoming the Queen of Queens and her court consisted of Donna Swain, Marsha Mills, Melissa Rowland, and Jackie Jackson. The Queen of Queens received a crown and along with the other members of the court, a bracelet presented by Student Council. The Home- coming Dance was a special night for all who attended. The scarey events of FRANKENSTEIN kept the audience tied to their seats, and the fact that most of the audience had just returned from the local Haunted House, where they saw some of the scariest faces ever, seemed to help the haunted and eerie atmosphere that prevailed throughout South that evening. Latonya Pritchet, a member of the cast, said, FRANKENSTEIN was one of the most fascinating plays I have ever been a part of. Student director Kathy Whitt said, Working with this group was a great experience. As the bewitching evening finally drew to a close, the student body felt that the play was a credit to Halloween and the cast was hauntingly good. Juanita Johnson, who played the part of Alice, stated, It was a good show and I enjoyed being a part of it. Although rehearsals had been a problem as the individual acts had to set their own schedules to work out their parts, by the time the first curtain went up, everything had been worked out and the show met the high standards set by the SHS Drama Department. Terry Phillips, who portrayed John, stated, I think the Christmas play was a success because almost everyone enjoyed it, and Carl Wilson, who played Arnold, the brother, said, I felt that it was a good experience in acting for me. All in all, the Christmas play offered something for everyone involved to the actors and actresses, it was an experience to perform and to try out new roles; to the stage crew, it was a challenge to create a set that would fit the mini-theater; and to the audience, it was an entertaining and enjoyable way to begin celebrating the holidays. The Macho Man of South High School is the one male choosen because of his popularity, his talents, and his ability to appear Macho. How Macho is Macho? Well, the competition begins with a one minute disco dance routine, followed by a swim suit contest, a muscle contest, one-handed pushups, pull ups, and ankle lifts. Just to keep the contestants from becoming too Macho, the final competition consisted of timed dressings in women ' s clothes which had the entire audience rolling with laughter. Helping to make this 1981 Macho Man Contest a success were participants Magid Saba, Keith Morgan, Kevin Wright (crowded Macho Man), Anthony Rhodes, Darrell Johnson, Bud Mongold, Neil Thomas, Brian Roberts, Jerome Taylor, and Jim Barnett. A special thanks goes to the Senior Boosters and Mrs. Deem who organize and sponsor this event each year. MACHO MAN 121 THE CREDIT LIFE INSURANCE CO. Each year the success of South ' s annual gymnastic show is dependent on the hard work of our gymnastists and their alumni and this year was no exception. Missy Rowland and Keith Echols did a fine job with the choreography of the dance numbers while Kevin Wright was instrumental in creating the dive routine. The almuni who return each year to perform added a special touch to the show and their routines were crowd pleasers throughout the show. Their presence gave inspiration to the comedy and special acts featured in the show. Although this performance takes a lot of time to prepare, it is a rewarding and fun way to end the year after the competition is completed. 1 Mrs. Marshall, Mike Stroup. 2. I can ' t find my robe and I know I left it right here on this chair. Is my tie straight or should I redo the whole thing? Mrs. Marshall says that it ' s time to do warm- ups and she really can ' t get started until everyone is here. These are just a few of the comments that can be hear back stage before a performance of the South High School choirs. Few people in the audience realize the last minute preparations going on behind the curtains so that the musical groups of SHS can present a quality concert for all to enjoy. The Spring Concert and the choir contest were just two of the highlights of the year for the Symphonic Choir, the Sophomore Choir and the Jazz Choir. Other activities of these groups included solo and ensemble contest, caroling in the hall of South at Christmas time, and singing for the new students and their parents at Sophomore Orientation. As if the many practice sessions and concerts were not enough to fill the time of the choir members, they also sold sausage and cheese in order to raise money for new music and other supplies needed by the group. Under the able direction of Mrs. Alice Marshall, the choirs successfully promoted the fine art of singing throughout the year. CHOIR CONCERTS 125 1 . Kim Wipert, Jeff Durrant. 2. Talented people have spent many hours learning to master these difficult instruments and then put them all together to produce a harmonious sound. On special nights throughout the year the stage comes alive with the sounds of music which are performed by the various musical groups at South High School. Regardless of musical tastes, any member of an audience could find exactly what he liked as the stage band, jazz band, and orchestra presented their programs. These groups filled the air with pleasurable sounds at their concerts and the members of these musical organizations did a delightful job throughout the year, bringing wonderful sounds of music to one and all. For a junior, one must have a 3.3 grad average plus two extracurricular activities. On April 23, nine seniors and sixteen juniors were inducted into the society. The ceremony was performed by the present seniors inducted in their junior year. The students ' parents and friends were invited to the ceremony held in the auditorium and to a reception afterwards in the library. It is an honor that is never forgotten. Academics, participation in school activities, and leadership are the keys to knowledge for many students and they are the pillars upon which National Honor Society is built. A student that is involved in his school and in his school activities is the student that wants to work harder to obtain good grades. Underclassmen are saddened at the thought of senior friends who will not be returning in the fall and seniors realize that the times spent with friends acquired over the past three years are quickly coming to an end. Soft music, covered tables, and a flowing punch fountain helped to set the mood at South for the Prom this year as Mr. Barrett and the members of the Student Council took over the duties of planning the gala evening. The selection of music varied throughout the evening from mellow to rock to soul, which at one time or another gave everyone a chance to get up and enjoy themselves. Together the people, the place, and the atmosphere made our senior class of 1981 appreciated the prom committee and all involved for making this Last Dance possible. Prom in the cafeteria didn ' t sound too exciting until the students arrived and found that the Commons area was hardly recognizable. Tables placed around the balcony above the dance floor and benches scattered across the front lawn so that couples could stroll around the campus or sit out a dance in the cool breeze of the evening made a perfect setting for the Junior-Senior Prom. It was the signal that graduation was almost here and the members of the class would soon go down different paths to seek individual goals and aspirations. It was the last time to get together as students of South. CLASS NIGHT 139 — CEDAR POINT OR BUST! It was almost time for graduation and the seniors gathered for one last week-end of fun before their high school days were complete. On Friday afternoon the ' 81 seniors boarded buses and headed for a funfilled week-end at Cedar Point. For the next twenty-four hours there was litle time for rest as the seniors filled their time with swimming at the Green Tree Inn where they spent Friday night, visiting the Somewhere Else which is a popular teenage Recreational Center in Sandusky, and enjoying the rides and shows at the park. There were so many things to do and see that once they entered the park, many of the group never saw each other again until they left. When asked if she felt her Senior Class Trip was a success, Lisa Peterson replied enthusiastically, Yes, it was nice to get away with my fellow classmates, knowing that we will all have an enjoyable experience to remember in the future. Student Council officer, Sonya Smith said that the trip was much better than she had expected. When we voted on where we would be going on our trip, I was disappointed when Cedar Point was chosen. So the trip was surprisingly fun for me, she said. The weekend at Cedar Point proved to be a happy memory for all the seniors who went on the trip. On Thursday, May 28, 1981, family and friends of the graduating seniors gathered at Memorial Hall to pay tribute to all those students who had earned their high school diploma from South High School. They watched 377 seniors march to Pomp and Circumstances. . The Invocation was given by Bret Kugler and the Senior Address was presented by Thong Tran. Speeches were also given by David Chapman and John Warren, valedictorian and salutatorian of the 1981 graduating class. The choir sang Tomorrow and The Battle Hymn of the Republic and then the moment that everyone had been waiting for finally arrived. Signs of happiness and relief gleamed on the graduates ' faces as they each received their diploma. As the Alma Mater was sung, the eyes of the graduates glistened with tears and the ceremony ended with the Benediction given by Joanna Shropshire. It is a time of parting friends, proud parents, feelings of accomplishment, and decisions about the future. For some people, it is the biggest step they will take in their whole life. But for others, it is just the first step of many. No matter what size of step it is, graduation is an important part of everyone ' s life. After graduating, one must step out of the sheltered life of high school into the real world. There must be many adjustments made during this time in one ' s life. Whether one goes to college or goes straight into the working world does not matter. The change is still there along with the feeling of growing up. GRADUATION us f It 146 LET ' S HAVE A GOOD DAY Sometimes the walls trembled from the wrecking ball; sometimes there were no windows in the middle of winter; sometimes there were no classrooms in which to tea ch . . . and yet, there was always a laughing voice that started each day with a friendly coaxing, Let ' s have a good day! For four years Mr. John- B. Wright, principal of South High School, kept his faculty and student body looking toward the future in spite of the major renovation going on in the building. Few individuals could have maintained a sense of humor and an atmosphere of learning while trying to cooperate with Central Office and the Board of Education, negotiate with construction personnel, and maintain an orderly school when some staff member or student was always unhappy. For this reason, among others, we, the 1981 WILDCAT staff, proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mr. John B. Wright. He has always been a dedicated principal and while he demonstrated his concern for his school, he still remained a friend of all who worked or learned within the halls of South.
