Acquired new equipment, initiated duplicating class L4The business department of South is now com- parable to the business department of any college, stated Mr. Gordon Prieb, business coordinator. This statement stems from the fact that over 320,- 000 worth of equipment was purchased for the de- partment. New Electronics Future Incorporated equipment was installed in shorthand classes to enable individual students to take dictation at differ- ent speeds. Ofhce Machines Duplicating, a new vocational course, was added to the curriculum of the department, the course taught students to sten- cil, duplicate, and bind any article which they might wish to print. Chaperoned pupil tours, organized language club Included in the progress of the foreign language department were a number of facets of development. French students began the jeunes Americains de la France Club, an honor club, the first in South's his- tory. Meetings were conducted entirely in French around a chosen theme. This year, German teacher Mrs. Zenobia Washington experimented with the Chilton audio-visual method of teaching. A new Spanish teacher, Miss Judy Phipps, was a replace- ment inthe department. During the summer, a study grant was awarded to Mr. Roland Curzydlo for the study ofSpanish at the National Defense Education Act Institute in Mexico. Mr. Dieter Daub was principal of a Foreign Language League school in Austria, and Mrs. Washington chape- roned a group of South High students in Austria. Sophomore Ron Clements experienced a new challenge as he gave his first oral report in Spanish II.
